Assuming at least one of the picks (maybe two) for Edwards will be gone. Plus we still owe one for Sheppard. I was really hoping after all the trading up we have done lately, we would have traded dwon, taken advantage of the potential great depth of this draft and stockpiled picks. Pretty disappointing as I am not high on Edwards at all. Edwards draft stock has never been lower, maybe they are mid round picks but still. I'm thinking they are conditional on how well he plays and if he resigns.
Well I'm sure edwards is better than any rookie we would draft with the 3rd and 5th pick we are giving up.
Jets have only 3 picks left now? 1st, 4th and whichever of 6/7 Detroit didn't get for O'Connell. 2nd for Lito already and now two picks for Braylon.
The 2nd for Lito is not even close to a definite. Tanny actually did a very good job of working that out, -- see below; http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...lito-sheppard-trade-details-are-a-work-of-art Rich Cimini's report on the trade from the New York Daily News shines some light on the value of Sheppard's new contract. "The Jets sweetened Sheppard's contract, giving him a four-year, $27.2 million extension through 2013. It kicks in next year, when he receives a $10 million signing bonus in March." Not a very impressive tidbit alone, I know. But the extra details from kffl.com expose the silver lining that could help the Jets keep their 2010 draft pick. "...the deal will only kick in if the Jets decide to pay a $10 million option bonus in March 2010... If Sheppard misses considerable time during the season, they would only have to trade a fifth-round draft choice to the Philadelphia Eagles. The conditional 2010 draft choice will be a second-round draft choice if Sheppard plays 85 percent of the season and receives the four-year extension.." Assuming the reports are accurate, this means Tannenbaum effectively pulled a New Orleans on the Eagles. They only get the conditional pick if the Jets pay the $10 million bonus next March. Brandon Moore is laughing somewhere. There's no way Tannenbaum pays that money to a second cornerback—even if he eclipses his six interception career-high. If I'm interpreting this properly, Sheppard's time in New York is basically a one-year tryout. If his career is rejuvenated with the Jets and he returns to All-Pro form, that still wouldn't satisfy the terms Tannenbaum worked out with Philly to bring him here. Playing 85-percent of the snaps is only half the battle. Despite all the talk about Sheppard losing his job and falling to fourth on the Eagles' depth chart, the trade still works out in the Jets' favor. Looking to free agency was only going to turn out overpriced names. With guys like DeAngelo Hall and Domonique Foxworth getting big money, even less talented players like Leigh Bodden were going to overvalue their worth. Finding a CB to play opposite Revis was a priority, but overpaying was out of the question. If it turns out that Philly was right and Sheppard became an injury-prone scrub who belongs in dime packages only, then he won't receive 85-percent of the snaps anyway. Regardless, the risk for making the trade is really no risk at all. If he works out, it's not like he's being asked to come to the Jets and be the top CB. He won't be lined up against primary receivers, smart quarterbacks are still afraid of Revis, and Sheppard's fast enough to not get burned. What's not to like?
They can easily get around a 2nd to Lito. He might not meet the playing time requirements anyways. This just means we can replenish our lines this year and not worry about skill positions.
If Lito misses one more game he'll fall below 85% of games played, although it might be snaps over the course of the season. Either way, you use the draft to acquire talent, and that's what we've done. I think Braylon Edwards has a better shot at working out than had we drafted a wide receiver in the 3rd or 5th round.
Are you seriously worried about the draft? we have the chips in place for the next 3-4 years and you are worried about the draft. Don't forget there is still FA which we can use to fill some needs.
by missing 2 full games doesn't that cut lito's play time down to nearly 85% as it is? thats 1/8 of the season or 12.5% right there. so i mean if he misses 2.6% of the snaps for the rest of the season doesnt that nullify the 85% play time requirement? so maybe him missing these 2 games is a blessing in disguise.... I mean i don't think with him in against NO we win that game, and without him we beat tennessee, so I think this all works out and we only give up the picks for edwards next year. That said, i still think we over payed for him. We got Jenkins for the 3 and 5. braylon also cost us 2 players. then again we got him cheaper than the cowboys got Roy Williams for last year...
I know it may sound silly, I just don't think adding a WR in the middle of the season will work. I was looking forward to the Jets adding a young WR in the draft to pair with Sanchez, Keller & Greene for the next 5-7 years. Hopefully Edwards is that guy but I have my doubts.
Why would anybody be surprised? This is how Tannenbaum ALWAYS handles the draft. He isn't going to change because you want him to. He will add through FA, trades and grouping picks to move up. So far it's working just fine.
I'm assuming the Lito pick will be a 4th rather than a 2nd. I think Tannenbaum would cut and resign Sheppard before giving up a 2nd round pick. This gives us our first two picks in the draft to focus on the offensive line. The skill positions are taken care of, and line depth is one position where you can easily have a rookie come in and contribute. The learning curve on wide receivers is much longer than for either line.
If we let Shep go, then re-sign him right away we don't have to give up anything (i'm not sure about that can somebody confirm?) Tanny is a crafty guy he'll figure it out
^ if Shep misses one more game and then doesn't play half of another, he's a 5th round pick. The Jets probably will end up with their 1st, 2nd, 4th for this year. Trade down Tanny, this draft should be at least 5 picks. There is too much talent.
Agreed. We'll shore up our immediate needs now, then work the draft for depth and youth along both lines. Yes, we lost some picks, but we haven't hampered our ability to work the draft TOO much.
^ i just want one guy who is beyond dominant on either side of the line. Give me a great DE or a great RT. just make the lines that much more powerful. and a LG to replace Faneca in 2 years.
