1) After 16 quarters the defense has given up I believe 3 touchdowns. They played four veteran qbs and limited each of them. 2) I don't know what it is that Rex Ryan does but he gets the most out of every player on defense. He has five corners (Revis, Sheppard, Lowery, strickland and Coleman) along with 3 safeties (Smith, Rhodes and Leonard) that are all playing at a high level in his defense. 3) Getting Calvin Pace back is only going to make this defense that much better. The options available to Rex with Pace, Harris and Scott and never ending. 4) The defense rarely misses a tackle and does not give up big plays. 5) The special teams with a few exceptions have done a very good job. One bad punt and one bad kickoff in four games is tolerable. The special teams and defense have played as well as you could ask through four games. 6) When you have a great defense and solid specials you will be in every game as long as you don't turn the ball over on offense. 7) The key to the next 12 games is the running game and keeping Sanchez out of bad situations. Washington has been much more effective then Thomas Jones and Greene on four carries looked like the missing piece this offense needs. 8) Mark Sanchez does not need to score touchdowns or be a hero. He should not be throwing the ball from the opposing teams end zone. He should not be forcing the ball in the red zone. I do not blame him for yesterday. Every rookie qb and most veteran qbs have days like yesterday. I think he is going to be a great qb for the Jets but it is going to take time. 9) With that being said, Rex and shotty jr need to put him in good situations. He can't be in 3rd and 7 all day. They need to utilize Leon, Greene and Keller to get to 3rd and short where running the ball is an option. They need to take the third and short shotgun plays and throw them out of the playbook. 10) The Jets have the ability to win a lot of games this year. Like the Ravens last year they can play with anyone as long as their offense doesn't turn it over. I am all for them giving Sanchez the oppurtunity to throw the ball down field but the coaches have to remember that not turning it over is the biggest priority. When you have a top defense punting is not the worst thing in the world.
Yes, I agree. Definitely. Just don't put Sanchez in a position to lose us the game, like the pass in the endzone for example, and we'll be absolutely fine.
I can't disagree with any of your assertations .... Think about it .... Our offense has given up the same number of touchdowns to our opponents .... We do need to keep Sanchez out of situations where he has to be a hero ... The last int. and probably the last 2 int's happened because he was forced into a situation where they knew we were passing, he had no where to throw and instead of doing what a seasoned vet would do and throw it away, he tried to be the hero and "fit it in" ... Nice thought, that very seldom works !!!
Agreed and adding another: Receivers need to catch EVERY catchable pass too. Too many drops in the open field - I'm looking at you Smith and Stuckey, and a drop in the open field is as bad (or worse) as a penalty.
Smith just shouldn't be lined up at WR. His value in the Seminole and on special teams makes him a great asset but he can't catch the damn ball. Good post Dreessen, I agree 100%
Brees had 6 TDs in the first week. Brady had 50+ TDs in 16 games his last season. Jets have given up 3 TDs in 4 games including one against Brees and Brady each.
I agree except for the part of excluding TJ so early... I am not a TJ lover, but the man needs to be fed for results to come.. If he gets fed 20 times and still produces sub 3.5 ypc I'm all for sitting him, but we are simply not giving the bread and butter of this team (tj/lwash/soon greene) to take pressure off our rookie qb.. I think the Seminole is very viable and with both TJ/Green or big Tony and Leon in the same formation you can see some very explosive running plays that will wear the hell out of most any front seven..
agreed with the op on all points pretty much. Yesterday's game to me came down to offensive play calling. They got a little to cute yesterday in trying to put the ball in Sancez's hands too much. It's good they show confidence in him, but too many bad situational calls yesterday that back fired. too many third and short passes......the end zone play calling was poor..........can't set up the kid to fail in that situation, your defense just made a great stand.........you punt it out of there worst case. team showed me some moxie yesterday........ a little more prudent play calls by the staff, and it might have been a tighter game....still think the Saints are a good team though, and probably would have found a way to win (Brees is the man)......and an NFC loss is not the worst
I agree on alot here...and the keys for the next 12 games are to control the time of possession, running the ball effectively, and most importantly no turnovers
The only thing I disagree w/ is the 3rd & Short Shotgun. The only reason people are bitching about it is because we lost yesterday. This has been done in all 3 wins.... I have no problem with that formation but I do however have a problem w/the plays called out of it yesterday. a 3rd and short shotgun must be utilized in order to keep the defense from stacking on 3rd and short. The problem was that the plays called out of it were horrendous. And the reason it didn't work was because we rant slants allllll day and ran straight into the line. You mean that was the gameplan Shotty?
I meant one game each against Brady and Brees...where they combined for 1 TD, and 4 FGs. Only 19 points. Add the 0 from Houston and you have a grand total of 19 points by the three super powered offenses.
Excelent Post! Can nto really disagree with anyof it and I hope that Greene gets healthy very, very soon.
Great write-up. It really is impressive with some of our guys that looked ?? last year, look really solid this year. There is alot to be learned from this game but alot of positives too.
