http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/2009/10/05/2009-10-05_cheap_shot_by.html NEW ORLEANS - Is Mark Sanchez developing a reputation as a cheap-shot artist? On Darren Sharper's 99-yard interception return Sunday, Sanchez gave chase and - for some reason - dived at the legs of former Jets LB Jonathan Vilma, who was blocking. Sanchez was flagged for a personal foul. "He got my knees," Vilma said. "Thank God, I didn't get hurt. I hope he gets fined for it, like Brett Favre in the preseason." In the season opener, Sanchez was penalized for a similar infraction while giving chase on a long fumble return for a touchdown. LINE OF DISCONTENT: Jets LG Alan Faneca didn't directly criticize offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer for opting to throw the ball on two third-and-1 situations in the third quarter, but he made it clear the offensive line preferred to play smashmouth with the Saints. "Definitely, third-and-1 is our territory," Faneca said after the 24-10 loss to the Saints. "We want the ball. Put it on our shoulders. ... It's a toss-up. You can't do it every time, but third-and-short, you'd like to run the ball." On both plays, Sanchez threw drive-killing incompletions. Rex Ryan said he had no problem with the calls, saying "we thought we could hit a play" against those coverages. So much for Ground & Pound. BEING GREENE: In an attempt to spark their dormant running game, the Jets pulled rookie RB Shonn Greene out of mothballs. He replaced Thomas Jones and Leon Washington for a series in the second quarter, rushing four times for 23 yards. Greene would've had more chances, but he suffered an ankle injury. Jones and Washington combined for only 65 yards on 17 attempts, with Jones finally breaking loose for a 15-yard TD run. The Jets' most effective running plays came out of the "Seminole," their version of Wildcat. They did it four times for 27 yards. JUMP STOP: NT Kris Jenkins made the biggest defensive faux pas, jumping offsides on a fourth-and-1 from the Jets' 43 with 9:06 left. He knew the Saints would try to draw him offsides, but he did so anyway. "My intentions were good," Jenkins said. "I was trying to knock the center back to get some penetration, but I jumped too soon." Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...5/2009-10-05_cheap_shot_by.html#ixzz0T4DiNpIW
Faneca want's the team to put it on their shoulders, but the Run-O and line as a whole was playing like dogshit yesterday, so why in God's name do we want to trust them to get the extra yards? Show some consistent play and then we'll depend upon you.
I was calling for the good ol' FB Dive. Works every time. Unfortunately, Schotty didn't get a chance to play Madden this week.
He'll get fined, and he seriously needs to stop doing that. Not only does it piss the defense off more and make them more likely to take a cheap on u, it hurts the team (giving away 15 yds is never a good thing)
Did he ever do this at USC? It just strikes me as bizarre behavior - in what universe is that going to even affect the play, putting aside that it is dangerous and illegal? The Jets should tell him that if he does it again they're going to fine him $50,000 - perhaps that will help him to remember what's reasonable and what isn't. I thought the other blurbs were also very sensible. The two passes on 3rd and 1 were ridiculous (at least one was also from the shotgun, as I recall), Jenkins jumping offside on 4th and 1 was a terrible mistake, and hopefully Greene isn't hurt too badly, because considering how bad the Jets passing game has been the last three games (averaging 132 yards passing per game, not to mention the turnovers) they need all the help they can get.
He has intensity which is good, but unfortunately that will give us some silly mistakes each week, I am glad Vilma didn't get hurt, hopefully he stops so he or someone else don't get hurt
Sanchez shouldn't be doing that, but defenders use QBs, punters & kickers for target practice anytime they have a free shot. Vilma didn't complain, but the author should check out both sides of the coin.
You know, I'd have a bigger problem with it if so many defensive players didn't see an INT as a free shot to level the QB, even if he isn't even close to the play. I'd prefer he not go for the legs, though, whether he intended it or not, can't try and hurt someone and not be punished.
Been scratching my head over it all day today. What is he trying to do here? Bizarre indeed. But if it wasn't Vilma, we might not be complaining about it.
Cimini is a big flapping gaping asshole. He is so negative and inflammatory, it is beyond comprehension. I read all the NY papers everyday. I am completely done reading what that asshole writes. Beyond that Sanchez has to stop doing crap like that.
I think Mark was just intimidated when he saw Vilma charging down trying to help Sharper score by probably blocking off Sanchez from making a play and in result Sanchez threw that shot. I agree that he should and has to stop doing this or else this could very well happen
