I never hated Beningo until I actually decided to be more than just a casual fan of sports, and study them. When I started reading Baseball Prospectus, Football Outsiders, you realize just how behind the times he is. And calling the Jeff Francouer trade "possibly the best in Mets history" proves that he is a fucking moron. That's all you need to know about him. He's a dope.

I've seen him a few times in the parking lot. He always stops to talk to whomever wants to speak with him and had no problem delaying his walk into the stadium to take a picture with my son. I can see how his "routine" may be getting old but as far as the person he seems like a stand up guy. And hey...I've decide not to go to games becuase of shitty weather. If its snowing or raining like a bitch I'm not driving my ass up to the stadium. If that makes me less of a fan so be it.

All I'm saying is that if you do hold yourself out to be the #1 fan, the face of the franchise with regards to the fanbase, you need to be a little more consistent in your actions.

I'm pretty sure Beningo said that about Francouer with tongue planted firmly in cheek.......jeez...the fact that he's just a regualr fan is what makes him appealing to me.......people who bury their noses in stats and "sports" literature don't impress me at all...it aint freakin rocket science and should never be treated as such

The interview is up on WFAN now.

I really dont have a problem with the guy. Except for the fact that he was a Dolphin fan at one point and then became a Jets fan but I guess its not really front running when your talking about the Jets.

But the guy doesnt take credit for the chant and he does it because he wants to help give the Jets a home field advantage.

I agree with that. I always used to hate how Mad Dog would have these stupid fucking quizzes for the callers to win tickets and ask them some obscure shit like, "Who got the hit in Game 3 of the 46 World Series that tied the game in bottom of the 6th?" Then when they didnt know he would bust their balls..."COME ON!!"..."How can you not know that!!"

I'm all for hearing the regular fan talk sports.

the thing with Ed too, is that the fans themselves as well as the camera operators at the stadium can be blamed for his popularity, not the man himself. Years ago, as the chant started.........there always seemed to be someone in each part of the field, upper end zones on each side, guys on each side of the lowers...all took the mantle as leading their sections. it used to be sort of a competition between fans.......seems Ed wound up getting the most camera time ........now the fans just wait for him to start the chant. It wasn't always like that

I never, ever understood the animosity directed towards fireman ed. The guy goes to every game and is a true ny fireman. so what if youre just as dedicated, youre not the one leading the crowd every sunday. I think he does a fan-tastic job rallying everyone up. The fact is the J-e-t-s chant is of the best in football. While it may not be his original idea, there is no denying that it is alive and well because of him.

i agree completely koz, i also agree with tcrock on the i have more football knowledge than god people. if i had time for that i would surely use it in some more productive way. i enjoy sports i dont want to make them my job.

bottom line is everybody has a soft spot for the fireman. they fail to realize that there are just as many douchebag firemen as in any other line of work.

i dont want to be him, i dont want to meet him. i dont want to be the face of the jets nor do i want to be firemarshall ed. however he is a piss poor fan as are many others and like koz said if you are going to be the face of the fan you better be willing and able to stand up and be that.

i would rather they did it like they used to with the different sections doing it. at least we wouldnt have this jackass standing up doing it while we are in the huddle. and the lemmings following him.

yeah, Joe getting on him for his rooting interest as a kid wasn't really fair......I was a Cowboys fan & Jet fan when I was a kid....admittedly not until I was 14 or 15 though like Ed, maybe at like 12 I had my firm Jet fanaticism going and the Cowboys were gone.

Well, yes it's not okay to be an elitist, but these guys actively brush off statistical analysis. I called in one day and said how foolish it was to keep bunting with Luis Castillo in the first inning, because giving up outs, which are the currency of baseball, to advance a runner is not going to help you. I produced the runs expectancy matrix, which compiles every single situation over a 3-year period and tells you how many runs you'd expect to score (i.e. to start an inning, the expectancy is .555, with a runner on first, no outs, it's .953, but with a runner on second, no outs, it's only .573), talked about how good Castillo is at getting on base, and how it was a wasted to use him to move over a runner. They told me I was stupid and that the Mets needed to "manufacture" runs. Idiots.
