If you don't think a HC has anything to do with the draft, you probably have no business posting on a football message board.
Because one of the big three that year (Hall, Revis, Ross) were guaranteed to fall to us that day. At the time, most scouts had Hall and Revis rated equally- some said Hall was better, others said Revis was better. Mangini's area of expertise is defensive backs. He identified Revis as not only the preferable corner, but the MUST HAVE corner. When we traded up to secure him, Radio City Jets fans were chanting "Hall! Hall! Hall!" And I can't really attest to this, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Mangini,a big "homework" guy, gave his good buddy Ty Law a call or two to talk about the fellow Aliquippa native.
I think this is false as well, the reason Mangini was fired 24 hours after the season ended was because Woody Johnson is running this team. I don't think Tanny really wanted to fire his best friend. I am thrilled with the job Tanny has done as GM here but I do believe the HC has a pretty big impact on the players that have been brought in during his tenure so for. Tanny is a businessman, he works the phones relentlessly and he pretty much does a flawless job of going out and getting the players the CS wants. Sure Tanny has final say but I think he defers to the HC more than other GMs do.
You are out of your mind man. If you think Tanny didnt see what was going on behind the scenes then you're just clueless. Mangini is a control freak, the controlled the offense, he changed the defense after the Denver game last season. Kerry Rhodes even said after the season he wass unsure why Mangini made all these changes. Tanny knew why, and so do I, its because hes a CONTROL FREAK. Tanny is a smart, a smart football guy. He knew what needed to be done, and DID IT. Dont tell me about not wanting to fire his best friend, thats BS. He fired the guy 15 hours after the seasson ended, he was sending as message, and our locker room responded in such a positive way.
If you think the coach has complete control over the draft then you have no business posting, cause thats sure as heck how it sounds from you. I agreed they consult with the head coach, but theres a reason that coachs want complete control over teams. Manigini did not have that here, Tanny runs this team. Tanny runs our draft. Am I wrong? No, im not... You seem lost....
I'm pretty sure the decision to fire Mangini was made right after the Seattle game, but it wasn't announced until the Season officially ended.
I agree, but Tanny stepped in and fired him. I really don’t think Woody had anything to do with this. Tanny’s in the locker room, he knows whats going on. Theres a HUGE reason why coachs ask for full control of a team. Does no one get that? Do you guys think Tanny and Mangini sat in the war room together and Tanny let Mangini run the draft? Come on guys! They TALK about it, our scouts inform Tanny with information. And TANNY makes the final decision. End of story. The only thing we can thank Mangini for is last seasons collapse which led to where we are now, and a franchise QB.
I think it just depends on the GM, HC, and overall organization. I doubt it's as cut-&-dry as yer making it sound. The GM makes the final decision, yes, but do you really think a GM will select a player if the HC wants absolutely nothing to do with him? If I owned a team, that sounds like it'd be bad for my business.
Here, smart guy, let's see how it sounds from both of us. Me: Moron: You make it sound like HC has nothing to do with the draft, and I say he has a part in it, not complete control. Did you ever learn how to read, or do you just hammer away at the keyboard and get accidental sentence structure?
How the heck are you gonna sit here and call me a moron? And tell me I have no business posting on a football message board? Did you read what I posted on the 2nd page? We just had a big win, im a fucken Jets fan. GO back and read what I said, seems like you have some of your own problems bro. There is no doubt Tanny and Mangini consulted during the draft, but who the heck scouts these players? Mangini? You're telling me he coached the team and scouted college players? Ok? Hes looking at what our scouts write and tell him, then he puts in his own two cents, Tanny studies film with scouts while leading up to the draft, is Mangini there? Probably for some of it, but hes sure as heck not there all the time. Tanny makes the pick at the end of the day, Tanny did our draft, and while he might have done it with Mangini sitting next to him, theres no way in hell Mangini ran our draft, which is what this thread pretty much says. Do you think it was Mangini that said trade up and get David Harris? If you do, I feel sorry for you man. Theres a reason Tanny fired Mangini 15 hours after the season ended. Tanny is in control. TANNY RUNS THE TEAM.
I already posted what you said, which was a terrible, stupid, misinformed post fueled by hatred and lack of logic. You backpedaled after you said it and tried to give Mangini some tiny bit of credit, but it was a sorry, pathetic attempt. Don't feel sorry for me. I am better than you.
well with all that said.. Tanny did pick Mangini to run the team  Then again he picked Rex too. 1 for 2 aint bad.
Someone sounds upset. I stand by what I said. Tanny RUNS OUR DRAFT. If you want to give Mangini credit for our draft classes, then all I can say is WOW. Did Mangini also bring in all the free agents we signed from 06-08? Maybe you can count the 5 ex pats he brought it. Im sure Calvin Pace walked right in and Mangini's people skills sold him and Pace walked out saying wow I would like to play for Eric Mangini. I guess he put together all those great contracts numbers aswell?
I gave Mangini partial credit for the draft, and you tried to make it sound like I was saying he had total control. You are misconstruing my argument because yours is terribly weak. Your argument sucks so bad that you're only giving him credit for the bad acquisitions and not the good ones. Obviously you were the captain of the debate team.
Only consolation we can take from the Gholston pick is that several of the players taken right around him aren't having much of an impact either. Glenn Dorsey and Chris Long (another player the Jets supposedly coveted) haven't done a whole lot. Not sure about Sedrick Ellis. Jerod Mayo was clearly the steal of that draft.
Mangini and Tannenbaum did a very good job of drafting players for us. They got some real good players in the drafts from 06 forward. I prefer to give Tanny the majority of the credit though lol.
