the pats always bring it. thats why this team has bravado now. i dont get this whole media buzz about us being cocky. its called being confident in your ability to play the game.

furthermore, you cant be the best until you beat the best, and thats why we bash the pats more than anyone else, its out of respect for the wins they generate. although if Bellicheck caught fire id prolly watch him burn. i think hes a shitty excuse for a human being. but a masterful coach lol.

the Jets are prepared to back it up. thats what all the talkings for. these are grown ass men raising the bar for themselves by putting the expectation of beating the pats out there before kickoff.

now its time for them to man up and deliver, or simply say "the better team won today" if the Jets happen to lose.

the pats are comfortable and used to winning, you have to be gracious (at least in interviews) when you win that much otherwise the whole team gets pegged as arrogant.

thing is, the jets havent proven shit to anyone outside of our own fan base. I love the fact that when Rex got here all the enthusiasm and "take a swipe at one of ours and we'll take a swipe at two of yours"; Jets fans ate it up.

and all of a sudden that same enthusiasm and bravado hasnt slowed down a bit, and now that its the regular season more Jets fans would rather matter of factly talk about how good there team is, instead of knowing we have a good team now.

specifically a good team thats well aware of their capabilities and set the bar for ultimate success. save being humble for when you lose and shake the other guys hand and tell the cameras the we just didnt cut it out there, or they got us today.

but until then, theres nothing wrong with letting the opposing team know. win, lose, or draw. you just got hit with everything we got and youll feel it till kickoff next week.

everyone wanted an identity for this team, now we have one, and the fact that its bold and in your face has some of you backpedaling into a closet. id rather have a team that KNOWS they can win every game, EVERY week. and lets people know.

rather than the final product weve been forced to watch since Parcells up and left.

and if we lose, I'll chalk it up to a great effort on our part and an even better effort from the patriots. either way I find nothing wrong with exuding confidence.

and kerry rhodes can say what he likes, hes the one who will be out there against the pats defense.

and in the end, come Monday, all that will matter is the Titans. that and their will either be a huge explosion of "Rex Ryan is the man!" or "Maybe they Can Learn to Win First" threads.

point in case, alot of pre-pats analysis used to be "i HOPE we can" , "i HOPE (player x) can do this" now the talk is "were gonna be in brady's face", "its our time to take them down"

yeah, last time i checked confidence is never a bad thing. especially in sports. and if you guys think Rex Ryan will let them get over-confident i think your sorely mistaken.

*wasnt directed at the poster i quoted, but thats how i feel, fans need to embrace the culture change or stop telling other people to be excited.

Right now we have won 1 game and in dominating fashion. I don't see why we have to build an identity as a Bush league team of chatters. I want a team identity of a tough, attack D that plays hard every play that backs each other up on the field, has a short memory when things go bad and has fun doing it. Right now today the identity of the Jets is one of a Bush league group of talkers.

When Joe Namath made the guarantee it was before the SB not game 2 against the Chiefs or Raiders. This team plays the Pats twice this year and we play allot of other teams. Man up and create an identity on the field instead of acting like a 6 year old bully at recess.

i dont see what the big deal with being confident and raising the bar is. you can jump on the wagon after we rack up some more wins than.

I've been on the wagon for over 40 years. There is a difference between confidence and acting like a horses ass.

What difference is that? Do you get more points for keeping quiet? They have a purpose in doing what they are doing.

There are allot of people cool with talking shit, calling women Hos, spray painting walls and pissing in the street. That nonesense doesn't get points with me.

Performance backed up with personal integrity does.

rofl. so its strictly a generational thing then. for someone as respected as you thats what it boils down to? are you serious winston?

do you see the jets calling "calling women ho's, spray painting walls, and pissing in the street"

jesus christ man. theres a difference between pre-game banter, and letting the other team know you plan on hitting them hard. but you equate that to being a stereotypical thug?

wow......so im guessing all these great teams of the past never had illegal penalties, dirty hits, and trash talk in between snaps. or all the late night stories about players partying till the morning of the game. no, doing steroids and keeping your mouth shut. the good old days right.

Illegal hits, trash talking has always gone on and it has always been a negative in sports, particularly in football when guys are crippled in their 40's from those actions.

I'm not going to lie about it, the more I thought about it the more I decided to take a hard stand on this board about it. Poor sportsmanship, showing up the opposition is not something to cheer about.

Dude, Anthony Smith was hardly a premier DB. As a matter of fact he isn't even a Steeler anymore. The guy couldn't cover a bed with a blanket. There aren't to many quarterbacks in the league that couldn't make this guy look bad. He got victimized in this game by bringing attention to himself and the Steelers couldn't recover.

Don't worry Rhodes is a much better DB then Smith. Belicheat will try to embarass him but if Rhodes holds his ground it will only add to the frustration for the Patcheats.

what it boils down to is your equating our team to showboaters with no respect for the game.

i take it as our players being confident and actually being allowed to talk to the media.

if the media had access to teams in the past id have no doubt Deacon Jones would begin every week by telling the local beat reporter whos head hes going to smack off that week.

im not gonna sit here and debate it with you. cause if the jets lose I expect our players to simply say, "we didnt do what it takes to beat a team as good as the patriots. thats on us". then the next day the focus will be TEN.

point in case, if you dont like this new attitude the team is taking on, youll be complaining quite alot. cause this isnt a Rhodes thing, this is the new culture the Jets will have until weve either proved we deserve respect, or Rex Ryan is fired.

i respect you, but this is something we simply just wont agree upon.

No. That would make you a Ravens fan. The Patriots won the Super Bowl in 2002. I'm insinuating you made your way to the team after they won the second one. Perhaps I was giving you too much credit. I love it when "fans" don't even remember when that Super Bowl was.

Deacon Jones might well be one of the top 5 pass rushing DE of all time. He's in the HOF, he isn't Kerry Rhodes a guy with off the charts talent who hasn't brought it every game.

I love the attitude on the field at the end of the game there is no reason a tough hard hitting team can't shake the hands of their opponent and respect their opponent coming in the next week.

This may well be a generational thing? One of my child hood heroes was Ali. Nobody talked more trash but if you actually watch the old footage it was all in good fun to promote his fights. That's with one exception, his taunting of Frazier which is a black mark on Ali that he will never live down.

I'm sure that a brash young QB on a giggled-at upstart team in an upstart league guaranteeing a win over a highly respected juggernaut in 1968 was considered the pinnacle of sportsmanship, certainly not showing up the competition.

I believe at the time the Jets were the AFL Champs. I also know that Namath was drinking and was in a little back and forth with a couple of the Baltimore players who were telling him how much they were going to beat on the Jets. Weeb by the way was furious with Namath for saying it. Weeb is also the only HC in Jets history to actual win a SB.

Actually, studies now are showing that parents from the last two generations (of which I'm assuming you're a member) dropped the ball with their approach to sporting competitions. The "trophy generation" is now struggling to compete in the workplace because of the ingrained attitude that everyone is a winner and that your competition is to be praised. So, you'll have to forgive me if I'm glad that there are people out there raising their children to be competitive and feel superior to their opponents. You'll also have to forgive me if I feel that professional athletes have earned the right to assert their dominance as well. My kids can do whatever the hell they want as far as activities are concerned, but if they choose to partake in sports, I'm not going to expect them to clap for the other team when they're losing.

I'm not a member of that generation those are my brain dead kids raising my grand children.

Competition is exactly what it is and sportsmanship is exactly what it is. Parents who think their kids are better off not competing are just as dumb as those who think their kids need competition but don't need to carry themselves with dignity.

Yeah, but you didn't know that then, you know it after 40 years of re-tells of the story.

You don't know the context or situation in which Rhodes' comments took place, you don't even know the questions that spurred the comments.

The AFL championship and the Super Bowl win do not matter at all in this particular argument, either. You said that this was about sportsmanship and showing up the competition. In that argument, I see a certain startling parallel to what Rhodes said and what Namath said. Talking about championships is deflecting away from your reasoning for taking a hard stand.

Namath was a great player and I loved him as a player. The guy is a tragic human figure and failed at most of his life. The fact is I love the Jets, I will root for the Jets. I want the Jets to have great players and if they talk shit, act like assholes and embarrass themselves, it doesn't reflect on me, I'm rooting for the team.

I'm just reacting to the notion on this board that somehow Kerry Rhodes acting like a jerk is a good thing. At the time Namath made the guarantee it was a dumb thing to do. After the fact it plays out rather well. Had he said I want to embarrass the Colts I don't think it plays out so well?

I agree context is very important. If Rhodes said it tung and cheek obviously he wasn't bragging or trying to show up the Pats and I would be all for that. My beef is the notion on the board that he did do it to put pressure on the team to preform and does want to show up a hated rival.

You could make the argument that guaranteeing a win over such a heavily favored team like the Colts in the SB in those days is on the same level with saying you're going to embarrass the Pats in this day and age where trashtalk in the press is pretty common. You could also make an argument that they were both acting like jerk. I'm not sure I'd even disagree.

However, it could play out the same way after the fact for Rhodes' comments. If this team does in fact kick the shit out of the Pats - something I doubt - and then go on a storied roll to start up a dynasty-style team, people aren't going to look back on it as Rhodes being a jerk. The same way people don't look back at Namath as acting like a jerk.

Overreacting to it at this point seems like fear on the part of a lot of people because it was said in reference to the Patriots. I don't see the use of bashing Rhodes for what he said before the game is even played. What if he ends up being right?
