Fuck ! VG has been getting double teamed al day allowing others to make plays, give the guy a break already
I'm actually very happy with Gholston so far, he's executing his assignment pretty well and showing good push, he was also double teamed numerous times freeing up lanes. He contained the run pretty well also. You can't deny how much of an improvement this was from last year though, I'll take it and hopefully he continues to improve.
I agree with this. He did make a nice play in the first quarter by stringing out a sweep play and making the tackle. Realistically, he is playing much better than I ever thought he could at the end of last season. Is he an impact player? No. JAG at this point? Yes, but he is contributing to the D rather than sitting on his ass on the bench like he did last year.
Presumably some people here actually understand that his typical role depending on the call - is to do what he has been doing - occupy multiple blockers to enable the tacklers to close on the ball....he did that all day long and even wound up w/ 3 tackles and several hurries.
He was double teamed and/or pressuring Shaub on almost every play so it looked like he was doing a pretty good job, especially considering this was his first start. On the other hand, he looked pretty lethargic in coverage. Hopefully he'll continue to improve and eventually beat out cactus.
Gholston has replaced Pennington as the new Jet fan whipping boy, which means he can never win. If he has a bad game, it will be endless posts of he is horrible and the worst pick in Jet history. If he plays OK, it will be that he should be better. If he has a great game, it will be that he stunk last year and that it was the rest of the defense that enabled him to play well. The guy played well today. He got pressure on the QB, made some tackles, defended the run, and was around the ball. I have gone half a season without seeing some Jet defenders make plays, but they get a pass (Ellis? Thomas? ) . It's time to take Gholston out from under the microscope and let him develop. Mangini had no business benching him last year while letting Favre play. That is why Mangini is in Cleveland with a putrid team. This was Gholston's "first game." Meanwhile, the Jet defense played as aggressively and well as they have played in 10+ years today. What does that say for Mangini? After three years of being tortured by a passive, bend and then break, never get off the field defense, what I saw today was tremendous. When was the last time you felt as if the Jet defense was not going to be scored upon? I was hoping that the penalty on the Texan interception run back was on the Texans, because I knew Houston wouldn't score a TD. What a refreshing difference. Bottom line - let Ryan have a chance to make Gholston a player. After the performance of the Jet D today, they both deserve it.
Vern didn't have a good game, he had a great game... they kid hustled & threw the line around all day... Schaub is gonna be seeing #50 in his face in his sleep tonight
+1. We might not have gotten a blitzing LB who is going to get a lot of sacks but we might have stumbled upon a 260lb 3-4 DE. If he keeps helping this team and letting the other guys behind him make all the plays then we'll be fine. Ryan is using Gholston to his (current) strengths and it's working.
Is that those 2 jackoffs from the draft as your avatar? I think they may have that video posted in the Jets locker room for motivation. I could sack somebody after watching that fucker shake his head.
See that right there, to me that is the difference between Efficient and Struggling. Year in and Year out I've complained when JETS coaches fit square pegs in round holes. You can ask a Mouse to be a dog but that won't chase away the cats. It's soooo important to put players in a position to succeed and in order to do that, you can't ask a player to do something he physically or mentally can't do.
I'm a Gholston hater. But I think the haters are being way too crtitical and the apologists are being way too complimentary. He had a decent game, which is better than anything he did last year, so good. But he still isn't a difference maker or somone who must be on the field, which is what he needs to be. So I'm happy that he's improved (3 tackles in the game) but the "he had a great game" folks are overselling.
VG: 3 tackles Bart Scott: 2 tackles But that really doesn't matter. It's all about the unit playing as one and knocking the shit out of people.
