He is a career backup asking for starter money. This is all on him and his agent. The top 5 running backs in the league make an average of 6.6 million. The top 5!

I don't think Leon is a career backup. He's going to be a starter next year likely. The guy has Brian Westbrook / Tiki Barber like talent, and can be very successful as a starter.

Leon is more than a career backup.

From a moral standpoint you are right, it's none of our business. But from a Goodell run NFL point of view, off the field behavior has become very important.

Marshall is no doubt hi risk, hi reward. There is no doubt that he is amongst the most physically gifted receivers in the league and as good as Bowe is, a much better talent. But his emotional baggage and salary demands are as bad if not worse than Randy Moss's were. Trading a bunch for him and then paying him what he wants IMO tilts the deal too far into the risk side. If we were a WR away from the Super Bowl, I might be tempted to roll the dice but we arent.

And as everybody has said, how do you pay him and not make Leon happy? Leon may be asking for more than he is worth, but he is a model citizen and is well respected in the locker room. You cant sign Marshall to an extention before you take care of someone that has bled for you and earned a raise.

By career I mean his career up till now. He can't expect to get paid for something he has never done.

Tell that to the multi-millionaire 1st round rookies that just signed contracts.

Leon led the Jets in all purpose yards last season. The guy has proven himself to be a weapon in the running and passing game, not to mention his kick offs. He is a touchdown waiting to happen every time he touches the ball. What he has shown is that he's a dynamic playmaker... that much has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.

The job the Jets are going to have Leon do involves getting at least 50% more touches than he has in the past... if not more. He deserves to get paid commensurate to that. 6 million / year is a reasonable number for Leon.

No, he wasn't. He was one of two backs who shared the load on a team that was one of the first to go to the 2 back system. He is now the only back and HE makes 6 million a year. Don't tell me you are comparing the two.

He's been the best player on our team for the past two or three years WITHOUT even having much of a role in the offense. If you watched the pre-season you noticed he has a bigger role in the running game this year.

xxedge72x, if they lose Leon over a small amount of money I'd say it's the worst move since letting John Riggins get away.

So, now that it's rather clear Marshall isn't coming here, can we kill this thread?

Nobody cares about kickoffs. If he gets a new contract he will probably stop run backs anyway.

Agreed, from the NFL's perspective it's important. As fans all you really want is your team to win. Does this guy want a bunch of tree huggers out there?

None of that matters. He has been made an offer which exceeds what he has done up until now. He has averaged 150 touches a year for the last two years (not counting returns). He is not going to get paid more than what he has been offered. Not by the Jets anyway.

Love to. But until Kerry Rhodes decides to share his earth shattering revelation with us, there's nothing else to do. I could argue in the Obama thread, but I'm tired of winning arguments in there.

Why would he stop run backs? If he's good for 5 kick off return touchdowns a year, then why wouldn't they have him doing it? He's not the only effective RB on the roster. He doesn't need to be like a Thomas Jones, he just needs to get in there and get about 15 touches a game.

You're out of your mind. There's a long list of games we've won specifically because of Leon, what other player can we say that about? What does it matter if he scored on a kickoff return, a screen pass or a run from scrimmage? He wins you games, that's the whole reason they all do this, but none of that matters?

Oh, come on. We both know there are never any winners in the political threads. Only people who all claim victory because they all ran furiously towards different finish lines.

Also, the Jets blogs this morning stated that Kerry told them his news isn't a player acquisition.
