You feel there is only room for 1 talented fast RB on a team. Ok, there it is. That's where we disagree.
Maybe two would be better than one. Who thought the wildcat would allow the Dolphins to beat the Pats last year? Who thought the wildcat had any place in the NFL at all? Just sayin....
Let me qualify that by saying , there is no room for a fast 5'7 rb in a power offense when we have an all world 5'9 rb for change of pace already. It really has nothing to do with talent , it comes down to need
I gave you a pass the first term you called him Dreessen in another thread. Obviously, I'm going to call you out when it's not a simple brain fart. So, because Leon was able to shoulder the load, EVERY small back is going to be able to? I didn't say Woodhead couldn't. I have no reason to believe either way. My entire point is that you, and others, are overvaluing Woodhead. He's looked great against 3rd stringers, but to compare him to Leon when he hasn't proved anything is ridiculous (trying hard not to use the word 'absurd'). I asked you what you were basing your opinion that he can be a fine return man on. You've seen him return a single kick and no punts. Where is your belief coming from? The coaching staff has seen him in practice quite a bit now. They just lost Aundrae Allison, who seemed like a possibility to take over for Leon on kicks. You'd think that if Woodhead had demonstrated that surefire ability, he'd have merited more than a day on the final 53. Again, I'm not sure how Tanny's moves indicate that he's trying to do the sexy thing. Picking up a 4th QB, an unheralded Pats castoff, isn't sexy. Grabbing a TE and FB off waivers? Not sexy. Those latter two are important, unheralded (as evidenced by your willingness to summarily dismiss them a few posts back) positions. Not hot, flashy moves. The Davis move, in fact, WAS a move for the future. We're aging at FB. Trading for Brandon Marshall would be that kind of flashy move. Keeping the great Rudy story would fit as well. I'm not sure how you see dumping Woodhead as an attempt to come off as flashy or sexy.
Maybe on some other team that may just work . The Jets according to Ryan want to run a power running offense like the Ravens ran last year. In this scenario - I'd so no two's not better than one.
Woodhead is not an NFL running back. Even if he was on still on the final 53 I doubt he would ever be part of the 45 that dress. Leon is a the kick returner and Leonhard is the punt returner. Woodhead is a nice story but thats all he is. Didn't we have some horrible third string running back last year who had 130 yards in game 4 against future truck drivers?
actually, hester is worse than leon at KR. he's lost his job, but kept his PR job, not to the fact that he's competing for a starting WR job, but because he's just not that good at KR. Leon is by far the best in the NFL at KR. It has nothing to do with Hester competing for a job.
And maybe two wouldn't be better than one. Just sayin.... See how easy it is? I can pick hypothetical situations to state as fact as well. ANYTHING "could" work. You have to choose where to concentrate your efforts and what approach to follow. The Dolphins chose to pursue the opinion that multiple talented RBs on the field was a positive, and it worked for them, although with rapidly diminishing success. Al Davis takes the approach that you can never have enough speed on the field, and it fails. Our front office is following the blueprint that it believes puts us in the best position for success. Unfortunately, that meant there was no room for Woodhead at this moment.
Now see, I'd say that's as foolish as suggesting unequivocally that he's the future of this team. He's shown some promise this preseason. That's about all we know at this point.
Dude, Leon Washington is a top 3 KR in the league. As much as I love him as a running back, he's not a starter. He's a great #2, and fun as hell to watch. But his value as a kick returner is far better than that as a running back, and even if it wasn't, how often do kick returns get badly injured? Didn't Ed Reed return punts for a long time for Baltimore? I think he's a hell of a lot better at safety than Leon is at RB.
He's undersized, doesn't have a quick burst, goes down as soon as someone touches him, wasn't drafted, still hasn't been picked up by another team. He like many other players that aren't good enough for the NFL had a good 4th preseason game. At best he's a change of pace back in the NFL. What did he show in the three previous games?
I really do not understand all the anger about a guy being cut who would not see the field to begin with. as others have pointed out, Woodhead was a good story, nothing more. Our season or our future will not be affected by the loss of Woodhead. time to move on.
I bow before your forgiveness! LOL.... yes, I siad Dressen not Dearth twice. I'm an old guy... we get like that at times. I know Dearth has been the long snapper here for like, forever. Flatulence usually means more than one fart. Dearth has been here forever because he is one of the best LS the NFL has ever seen, but I digress... Why do I think Woodhead could be (likely is) a good return man is because he demonstrated his ability to run with speed and elusivesness in the open field. That is what makes a player a good return man... open field speed and elusiveness. Looks to me like the kid knows how to protect the ball too. T Rich is old, and I don't have a problem with getting another FB in this offense. You say Leon can shoulder the load.... and without any basis in historical data, yet you think he can. Also wothout historical data, you believe Woodhead can't. I agree with you about Leon, but to make that judgement regarding Woodhead is premature. I say we don't know enough about Woodhead to reach that conclusion. Yes, Woodhead looked good agianst 3rd stringers.... one could say the same thing about Greene. So, if Woodhead's success against them is suspect, so is Greene's. This kid is far from a proven commodity as well. I thought Greene looked bad at times between the tackles, but people seem to think he is money in the bank. He has a lot to prove yet. Trading for O'Connell.... made headlines. Unless there is another deal in the works, Tanny is making moves for the sake of making moves. That's my point. Hey... it's just my opinion on these moves. As far as I am concerned, this was the worst day as a Jets fan that I have seen under Ryan, and I don't like it. My optomism has turned into being cynical. I saw this team going in a direction, with some focus. Now I see a bunch of typical knee jerk stuff reminiscent of the previous two regimes. Like watching Schotty's offense in year one, and watching it go vanilla after that. Ryan is starting to look like just another coach to me with these moves. I hope I'm wrong.
If and when Jones leaves next year, your fill in with a RB in the draft. RBs are as easy to replace as any position in FB. Woodhead was not the future for the Jets at RB. Three backs should be enough. If not, you pick up a 210+ back off the scrap heap to play out the season and draft a RB next year. Woodhead being cut isn't even a blip on the radar screen. RB is not an issue on this team. I still can't believe everybody getting bent out of shape over the 8 players who are not going to be active every week.
This was the only part of your last post I had a real problem with. We have a hell of a lot more data on Leon than we do on Woodhead. In Leon's rookie season, he averaged 11 touches per game (not counting returns). I'm hoping to see him get 15 - 20 this season. I'm not talking about him becoming Michael Turner with 350+ carries. Somewhere in the range of 300 carries/catches. Again, his max to date has been 176. Woodhead's has been 0. Still, the entire point is moot when you consider my previous post: I didn't say that I believe Woodhead can't. I said I have no reason to believe either way. I haven't seen him in real game action against first stringers. How exactly did you turn those words into me believing that he can't do it? If Woodhead had Greene's size and competed against Division I talent, we could compare them more adequately. As it stands, of course Greene is far from a proven commodity. Of course he has a lot to prove yet. I hope you don't seriously believe that he should be treated and viewed in the same light as Woodhead, though. Woodhead may prove more successful one day, but the odds are most definitely in Greene's favor.
This is one of the most absurd arguments going on the board right now. You are seriously bashing Tanny for a couple of roster moves that will hardly affect the team on a weekly basis? If one of our RBs go down we can pick up a guy off the street that can be as effective as Danny Woodhead would be. I like the kids heart too but if we are relying on Danny Woodhead to get the bulk of carries we are in for a world of trouble anyway. Like I said this is an absurd argument, the majority of these guys you are talking about won't sniff the active roster on gamedays.
Hester had 51 offensive touches to Leon's 123 last season. Leon's carries and total touches are expect to rise this year as we lean more on a running and short passign attack. Add to that despite all of Leon's skills, he tied for 10th in KR average last season. He is a good return man, but are you saing none of the less used offensive guys can handle the job? He is not irreplaceable in the kick return role.
I also am not happy that Danny Woodhead got cut. He is a player that every team is looking for, and that is an inspirational player. His heart is something that all the player feed off of, and root for. Now I am not saying that is why he should be on the team because of his story, or his heart. He should be on this team because he can play. He would provide depth at both RB, and WR. (It is documented that he has the best hands of any RB on the Jets.) With that said, that is depth at 2 positions. 1 player for 2 roster spots. He is versatile, and willing to do anything to play. Seriously, our WR's right now are Cotchery - my favorite receiver since Chrebet. Stuckey/Clowney - Both unproven Smith - ST's/Gimmic player Wright - ST's/No hands Clowney has injury issues/concerns, and if he goes down Woodhead could jump in and provide our own version of Wes Welker. Try thinking outside the box before you say Woodhead could not provide an impact for this team. Also, he could relieve Leon or Leonard if either went down, or Leon became our feature back. How many versatile players on our offense do we have? Seriously!!! Waiving Woodhead for a 4th QB, when we have replaceable DB's is just plain foolish. JMHO Now, prove me wrong by giving me one player on our offense other than Washington that provides the versatility that Woodhead does. Oh, don't give me the size bullshit either.
The thing is, it isn't so much about Woodhead, although he is my example... it's about team chemistry and team culture. Woodhead was impressive according to reports when Leon and TJ didn't show up because of their contract disputes. Then, he finally gets his chance and has a great game, yada yada, I know, against Philly's threes. Woodhead was respected by his team mates. he served an an example of hard work=success. That was what Ryan has preached since day 1. Now that turned out to be a crock of shit. Like Ryan himself said, "what more could we have asked of him?" Just for the sake of team chemstry and culture, Woodhead was worth more than a 4th QB or an 11th DB. I could live with keeping another O lineman, a 2nd FB, a 3rd TE.... but NOT a 4th QB or an 11th DB. In short, Ryan's bullshit turned out to be just that... bullshit. I've had enough of coaches who don't practice what they preach. Herm was lying if his mouth was open... Mangini often spoke out the side of his mouth. I thought Ryan was different. No, I don't think so. It isn't about Woodhead. It's about an organization and a HC that says what he means and means what he says. Ryan failed that litmus test in my opinion. I beleive there will be a trickle down effect, and not a positive one. It's about team culture and chemistry. You think that is an absurd discussion? This is also why I wanted no part of B Marshall too. Or TO. Or any of these diva players. It's why I was sooooo happy to see MeShawn go to TB. Give me football players. Not whiny selfish "me first" players.
