We lead the league in sacks in the preseason with 18. (Attaboy, Vern!) This is a nice change of pace from Mangini's bend-but-don't-play-defense playcalling a year ago, one that most everyone here expected under Rex's regime. I know they were just exhibition games, but 18 sacks represents the highest total for a team in the preseason since the Patriots had 19 in 2003. That was the year of the "Homeland Defense," (ugh...) when the Patriots won 14 straight games, including the Super Bowl. That defense allowed a league low 14.9 points per game. It's all about that pressure, folks! Go Jets.
Obviously you don't read anything into preseason stats, but this is reflective of something we knew about Ryan coming into the year (and the main reason that I wanted him hired as coach.) For better or worse, the Jets are going to be going after the QB early and often.
If we can just get the Ghost matched up on insurance salesman for most of the regular season we'll be in great shape.
It may be about the pressure but what was very apparent was our D was simply not great against either the pass or the run. I'm not a big believer in putting any stock into pre-season other than are you being moved by the pile or are you moving the pile. It looked like teams were able to move the pile against our D. I suspect our team is going to be much more about how many points we put on the board with our passing game than it is about how we control the clock the field position and the tempo with our D, Special teams and running game.
The Jets defense looked really good this preseason! I think they carry this on to the regular season and up the intensity as the year plays out. I'm happy because Hakeem Nicks leads all WRs in yards, YPC, and TDs. Maybe there's hope for our passing game yet!
I was going to post this yesterday. Before the game, I believe we were 2nd in the Pre-Season league for 11 sacks. These stats don't say much to what the regular season will bring, but it makes me feel good knowing we're gonna be bringing it to the QB on almost every down. Especially since we didn't run any/much exotic blitz packages for a couple of games in the Pre-Season.
Lito Sheppard alone will probably have more penalty yards than half of the leagues team totals... You beat me to it runleonrun!
the way Flacco was being hurried at times was nice, but the 8 passes he completed were long ones. And the Jets should have given up about 4 big plays to long passes. There is a lot of work to do on this defense. to think they were going to be an automatic top 8 defense was foolish. they'll hit the 10-13 area until the scheme becomes automatic to them. Then we can talk top 10. You need HOF players to have an elite defense. Revis is the only candidate, and he's in year 3.
That depends on who the salesman is. If it was Dennis Haysbert from the All State commercials then VG would probably get pancaked.
One other pleasant preseason stat that may not seem so obvious . As of now the Jets have the most points scored in the preseason - 108 pts . Again means nothing as its preseason - but this caught me by surprise.
That is comforting. We were used to hearing how reLiable this d is going tO be. It's good to see them back it up.
Actually... Jets are ranked 7th fewest penalties on D 12th fewest on O http://www.nfl.com/stats/categoryst...=true&Submit=Go&tabSeq=2&role=TM&d-447263-p=1 http://www.nfl.com/stats/categoryst...true&Submit=Go&tabSeq=2&role=OPP&d-447263-p=1 For what it is worth the Pats have the most D penalties.
Best part about that stat, you know Rex didnt run the bulk of what they will run defensively. this was their "vanilla" defense. its gonna be a fun year.
