Man, year in and Year out I defend JETS players. WHy? Because they're JETS!!! Root FOR your team not AGAINST it's players. Every Year, Penny Abraham Jordan Moss Coles Clemens Gholston Kendall Vilma and the list goes on and on.... Can yall just root for people to succeed for a change!! Support your team, it's players!?
I don't think Jets fans are rooting against the players, they've just given up on being optimistic. It's like being tossed to the ground and getting repeatedly kicked in the face... everyone gives up eventually, some sooner than others. Personally, I'm not giving up the fight. 12-4, book it!!
Yes, I feel the same way. So far Westerman has shown natural instincts and the ability to beat his man. I liked the way he simply bull rushed his opponent on his sack of the QB. Gholston, imo, has a looooonnnggg way to go. That one 'sack' was due to blown coverage by a 2nd/3rd team player. No body blocked him!! So what was so impressive? I was trying to at least determine if he was in on any tackles but he seemed to always be five yards away from the tackles made. Not a good sign. Still looks lost out there. Great athletes like Gholston doesn't neccessarily equate to being a football player. That's the man issue I have with him.
I have to agree. I have said this before and I'll repaeat again: This is what you get when you draft an athlete instead of a football player. Gholston shows zero instincts out there. I'm willing to bet Westerman will be starting ahead of him just for this reason.
It sounds like there's several different arguments going on here re: Gholston. They are: -Gholston showed improvement yesterday and we should lower our expectations for him and support him. -Gholston hasn't done squat based on where we drafted him and will be a marginal NFL player. -We're stuck with Gholston so we need to make due with what we have and get the most out of him. -People are continually ripping Gholston when he's showing some signs of progress. The bottom line is you put the guys out on the field who give you the best chance to win. That's the point of this sport and all sports. If Gholston gives us that chance then I'm all for him. Yet if he doesn't then give other guys equal time to show what they can do so that we don't get exposed when the games really count. All I care about is which 11 guys on defense give the Jets the best shot at winning.
Please, give me a break they are waiting with pumped anticipation to call him a bust after a negative play
Maybe, but as I pointed out to WSW before, who gives a shit? Vernon Gholston's getting paid 20+ million dollars to get called a bust, while everyone here is getting paid zip to sit in their mother's basement making internet message board posts about a guy who would tear their limbs apart Mortal Kombat style in a face to face confrontation. I dare anyone on this site to meet Vernon Gholston in the parking lot of Applebees. As long as you're entertained by the game, then don't worry about everyone else.
I thought Gholston played decently last night. Nothing special his solid unspectacular play is better than last year's performances. He's really not fucking up and seems to understand his role and responsibilities. At the same time he's really not making any game changing plays but as long as he keeps making progress that's all we can ask for. He was getting double teamed on plays and created pressure. Also did anyone notice the Giants Oline are holding machines? We got flagged 78 times yet they treated the Giants oline as if they were gods gift.
+1 It does seem to be a yearly thing around Jets fans, wonder if it is the same with other teams fan base. :drunk:
I loved it, I was pissed about the call, the loud crack was from the shoulder pads, he looked like he was trying not to smile after, the other guys loved it, I bet it this game will increase his relationships with the other players
I would love to see Gholston making more impact plays, but right now he is improving and he is doing some things well out there. Any time he had a single blocker on him he was able to push the pocket and get some pressure. On running plays either as a down lineman or an upright linebacker, he is holding the blocker up but is just not able to slide off and make a tackle. The kid is strong, fast and he does play hard. He may never reach all pro ability and may always be a bust in the minds of some fans, but he is the third best outside linebacker we have on the team right now and he will make some important contribution while Pace is out on suspension.
Hopefully after the hit, he'll gain some confidence and realize that he can play in this league. Bart Scott needs to guide him.
I really dont like to post in this retarded thread, but it seems that this a really hot one since last night. My problem right now isnt Gholston's pass rushing ability. He's actually progressing nicely in that aspect and if he's continues down this path, he could be a respectable pass rusher this year. His run defense is another story. Ugh, I hate watching him take on blocks at times because he cant shed them quickly enough to get after the runner. He needs to learn how to use him hands, because right now hes terrible at that. However, when we drafted him, we weren't all excited because he could stop the run. We all wanted to see him crush QB's like Brady. (or Carr)
Sounds more and more to me that Gholston will be "the unsung hero" in the grand scheme of things. Nothing special, but not particularly bad either as time goes on. He'll occupy space, perhaps a pressure or two per game, maybe even a sack every now and then. At the end of his contract, they'll most likely let him walk considering there are already plenty "unsung heroes" making alot less money available. At his present rate of progression, he'll be well into his second contract before he ever lives up to his draft status. The question will be this, what color uni will Vern be wearing if and when this happens. For right now, he's still "Pvt. Pyle" until proven otherwise.
i saw a couple rushes of his that the line had to adjust too. i saw a couple rushes where he was just thrown aside. saw him get run at and be pushed back a few times, and i saw him catch a running back from behind. i admit i was watching hte game with tinted glasses, in that i was focusing on the negative. i have to say that at the end of it, i'm pleased with his performance last night. sure it could've been better. sure there's players who did better. but for someone who did very little to gain some confidence last year, and for someone who we've got to use (for the first 4 games at the very least) i saw a player who looked very different from the previous week. I'm not saying he's a probowler... i'm just saying i think he's earned a few weeks off of the "he's a bust" bandwagon that's been rolling along for some time now.
Amen. I can't understand that need to shit on players from your own team for no reason other than to be an asshole. Kendall deserved it though.
From everything that I've read so far, it seems that Cactus will also have a good year. Does anyone have a link to this hit...??
