I wonder if the Jets Shop will go crazy with marketing for Sanchez now that he is the starter. I want to preorder my New York Jet Sombrero already!!
I don't feel bad for Clemens. He had his shot and may get another this season. I agree - He is by all accounts a stand up, classy professional athlete who is a breath of fresh air as compared to self-centered assholes like TO, Chad J. and the like.
i just dont see rex holding back the reigns. i also dont see sanchez having a great year. it will surely be a year of ups and downs., the first 4 games could be a little ugly at this point. i wonder what woody is thinking right now. he is really putting alot of faith in this kid to become the franchse over night. i am actually disappointed as i really see gholston and snachez being the bane of this team for the next 4 years. its a shame that rex ryan may end up paying the ultimate price because of one overrated qb. (gholston wasnt his fault.)
I agree, it'll be a tough year for him. The only thing about this year that would really surprise me is if you give him an ounce of credit for any of those ups you're referring to.
Clemens did pretty good, but he needed to really show something this pre-season and he didn't come close. Too many interceptions during practice and not enough stats during the games. I'm very happy that he is not the starter, but he was alright. He didn't look like the total bust that I always said he was. I used to call him Arena League, but he could be a back-up somewhere - hopefully not with the Jets. Sanchez didn't do that great either, but Clemens needed to hit a home run. Anyway, I think Sanchez will do well during the season. He certainly has all the skills. As long as the running backs run the way they're supposed to, Sanchez will be fine. I really was impressed with Ainge. If he was the number two, I would not complain. I think he's much less prone to mistakes than Clemens. When camp began and he was a no show for "personal" reasons, I thought his time had ended with the Jets. But he has really looked like an NFL qb. I hope he's Sanchez's back-up soon.
I was impressed myself with how much Eric has come along in the last few weeks. Just several months ago it sounded like he didnt really care what was going on but he really turned things around.
Horrible choice. Sanchez is still not ready to take on NFL defenses. Clemens looks like a true professional when he's throwing the ball and it's a shame what they're doing to him.
Herd Mentality It seems everyone is happy that Sanchez was named starting QB. I have my doubts on a number of issues which include small body of college work, so so arm strength and lack of playing time in the Pros. Let's face it, this is all about selling seats for Woody. I thought the smart move would be to let Clemens play and see how he did. Charisma and looks don't factor into making such an important decision but I guess the marketing side of the organization won that battle. I hope I am wrong and he turns out to be an excellent QB but I just don't see it in year 1.
those issues have all been addressed. the only solution we have is that if that was such a big deal, clemens should've outplayed him by a wide margin in TC, games etc. And we all know that didn't happen. the experience issue is thus clearly overblown.
Winning sells seats. If the Jets go 4-12 this year its not heling the PSL situation no matter how pretty the guy playing QB is. Clemens did no better than Sanchez after having 3 full years extr time to prepair for the battle. The reason he lost is becasue he was not better than the rookie.
I think it's the right move because this is a total rebuilding year anyway. I just hope the kid shows he is the future.
i only got thru 6 of the 11 pages of this post, so if this is a repeat, sorry: we cut 'harvard' then brought him back just b/4 the raven game. why? sanchez, ainge, harvard clemens -> ???? just saying.
Might not be a total rebuilding year. Our D should be good, our O-line is good, we have the AFC's top rusher in Jones with Leon figuring to get more action. If Sanchez holds his own we could be ok, he doesn't have to be a hero. Similar blurprint to what Ryan was involved with in Baltimore last year, I'll bet that was in his mind in selecting Sanchez, too.
Exactly. If Clemens did great, he would have had the job. He knew what he needed to do to become the Jets starter, and he fell short. Sanchez may not be 100% ready, but Kellen Clemens is not Brett Favre.
The Jets ARE NOT THE Knicks. There is no rebuilding year! As an old Jets coach once said, "You play to win." Unfortunately for him, he played to tie
This is the reason I think it is/was safer to start Clemens. If he struggles.. everyone would have gotten fired up to bring in Sanchez. Now.. If Sanchez struggles, it will be a downer to go back to Clemens.... Just a risky move in my book.
Exactly....he looks like a true professional backup QB, and that's all he'll ever be. Since when has Clemens shown anything more than mediocrity? Anyone with any common sense knew that Clemens would have to play out of his mind to overtake Sanchez, and that clearly didn't happen. Sanchez, even with no NFL experience, at least showed flashes and glimpses of great potential to the coaching staff. Clemens, meanwhile, continued to be Clemens. Not good enough. Mark Sanchez was the clear and obvious choice. Of course, even if the Jets made a miracle trade for Brady or Peyton there'd at least be a few people in here bitching about it.
I think Rex believes he has a better chance of winning with Sanchez, and you play who's going to win you games. Rex wants to with the ring now. He's not thinking about Sanchez faultering any time soon. I think Rex it totally right bringing in Sanchez now. If it were a proven vet, then maybe sit him. But Clemens has never proven anything to anyone. A couple years ago, he was the worst rated qb in the league. I don't want to see that happen ever again. I hope Clemens never plays for the Jets again.
