I hate to say this, but I am leaning towards agreeing with you. He plays high, doesn't commit to his assignments and seems lost in space.
I was screaming at the TV when they drafted Vagina Gholston: "trade down and draft Rodgers-Cromartie."
The tackle was on a play he whiffed and had to run 15 yards just to catch up with the back who was crossing back across the field.
Gholston is why the owners must insist on a slotted system for draft picks. If they had one now he would have been put out to pasture last year and we would all have long forgotten him. As it is to cut him now would be about a 20 million dollar hit to the cap.
I agree. It's becoming a DIS-advantage to own a high draft pick because there is so much money and so much risk tied to each pick. The risk/reward ratio is just not there for the bad teams with high draft picks. Sure, every draft produces a franchise type player at the top of the first but in between there are so many hyped players that don't pan out.
Gholston, Alex Smith, David Carr, Joey Harrington, Reggie Bush...the list goes on. F*ck these busts. Everyone was worried about the Patriots taking Gholston...I bet he would be an animal on their team. Flip it and the Jets take Mayo and he busts, Jets can't ever win.
I don't believe that at all. After seeing this bum play (or what passes for it), I don't think the Pats would have drafted him at all. As far as Gholston being an animal for the Pats and Mayo busting on the Jets, by your logic David Harris and Darrelle Revis should be playing like shit. An excellent football player is an excellent football player. Gholston is an excellent body builder.
I think that the Pats did an excellent job of concealing their true intentions. Although I was not high on drafting Gholston, I was also very worried about him falling to the Pats and becoming a monster. I think the Pats' scouts knew better. I don't think they were ever real interested in drafting Gholston.
Agree 1,000,000% Maurry! LOL! Seriously, though, there is no way even Bellicheat could have gotten this guy to play because, as most have observed (1) he has no heart (2) he has no football skill or instinct (3) HE SUCKS! Sorry, all the excuse makers, it shouldn't be that hard for a LB to register tackles, even bullshit tackles, in the NFL. He has an assist last night when the stupid RB ran into him, and even there, he couldn't get a solo tackle. He's a waste!
Before the draft Cassel said that there were at least 20 GMs that didn't believe Gholston should be a 1st round pick. How come Tannenbaum wasn't one of them?
Didn't the Patriots put out on the backchannel that they were interested in Gholston b4 the draft? I think they spooked Tanny into drafting him just to keep him away from Belichek. Imagine if they would have taken Flacco instead at 6...
Here's his scouting report from Thewarroom: Strengths: Terrific natural athlete who is very strong for his size…he should continue to add to his frame and has the ability to be an every down player…14 sacks as a senior against top notch competition, including 3 against Jake Long…explosive off the line of scrimmage…already has a variety of pass rush moves…a “natural” pass rusher…he is willing to support against the run…hard working player who keeps himself in top notch shape… Weaknesses: Was inconsistent at times, disappearing in some games…while he has great strength for his size, he does not have the ideal frame for an NFL DE…may be best suited as a pass rusher in the ? defense, but does not have pass coverage skills as this time…played with a number of very talented defenders at Ohio State that helped keep the focus off him... Overall: Vernon Gholston is one of the top pass rushers in the 2008 NFL Draft and showed the ability to dominate at times at Ohio State. Gholston was not consistent, but his upside is tremendous and he is capable of being a factor rushing the QB right now. He may be asked to transition to a 3-4 rush OLB, a position at which he should succeed, if matched with the right defense and not asked to do too much too soon.
I'm as disgusted with Gholston as the next guy but this talk of cutting him after about 3 quarters of preseason football is just crazy talk. Not completely surprising considering Jets fans are the most irrational fanbase in all of sports but can we at least let him play one regular season game in this D before the irrationality kicks into high gear.
