Brady takes one in the chops Posted by Tom Curran on August 20, 2009 9:38 PM ET After the Patriots' preseason opener last week, Tom Brady said, "I wish somebody would just come and blast me. You get a little of that anxiousness out of the way. I'll have to wait until next week." Done and done. Here in Foxboro Thursday night, Brady got leveled on a seven-yard sack by Bengals defensive end Robert Geathers. [Editor's note: Trent Green might remember that name. Then again, he might not.] After turnstiling Patriots right tackle Nick Kaczur, Geathers hit Brady from the front side and took him down hard. Brady was forced to put pressure on his surgically-reconstructed left knee, and it took a twist as he hit the ground. He got up without event, and he didn't even check the knee or the brace he's now wearing to protect it. Brady was under much more duress this week than in the opener. On New England's first drive, Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers came through unblocked and, after Brady hurried a throw to avoid the sack, Rivers flung him to the ground. Also noteworthy was the fact that, on two other plays with modest pressure, Brady (four for eight for 57 yards in three series) didn't aggressively step through his deliveries and balls sailed incomplete. That will bear watching as the preseason continues.
This is what the Jets need to rely on.....a savage pass-rush. Tom Brady will fold like a tent if we can generate one. Damn you Calvin Pace for your supplement indiscretions....and damn you Gladys Gholston....for being a pussyfart.
Thanks for the good news. Always like to hear Tom Brady is gettin his shit shoved in. (still got to respect that talent of course).
by the end of the 2nd regular season game belicheck will be kicking himself for letting (? name) QB go
the mental aspect of a injury as severe as that one will affect his accuracy and strength for the remainder of his career. its sad for him but Brady will never be as good as he was before that freak injury.
i know that, but I'll bet production dips. I saw the same subtle flinching that i've seen in pitchers after they've nearly been beaned in the head from a comebacker on the previous pitch.
I think people overstate the mental thing. Anyone that's been playing football for 20+ years has seen enough freak injuries to know it only takes one play to ruin a career. He's looked pretty comfortable in the pocket so far but missed a few throws. He's shown some rust, but if the injury holds him back at all it will be the physical part imo. The knee only affects his mobility, which he had none of to begin with. It could turn out it also stops him from moving around the pocket as well as he used to (his best quality in my mind), but it's too early to make a call on that. 14 for 23 for 157 yards, 2 tds and 1 interception so far, for those interested. And since adding up splits from two preseason games is probably one of the most accurate and meaningful ways to evaluate how a guy will do in the regular season, I'm gonna say at this point he's pretty much a slam dunk for 55 touchdowns and 5000 yards this season.
It's good he is getting used to absorbing some hits. It will be a virtual jailbreak when he plays the Jets.
I watched that game and I saw the pats using a spread formation. If Brady gets time to throw he will eat defenses alive. I hope Rex breaks out the old Bears 46 and tweaks it up because i think that def would smash Brady to the ground before he even had a chance to throw.. IMHO of course.
this is a non story till i see it translate to the regular season. the guys coming off MAJOR knee surgery and hasnt seen live action in a long time. I'd chalk it up to rust and rehabilitation before I claim "Brady's done". but in all reality a injury like this will affect his pocket movement. and if a team generates a real rush, we could see a couple errant throws in which brady would typically stand in the face of the rush and step into his throw. until then. this is worth being monitored. either way there will be plays when the line blocks and brady chucks it around to his track team (moss, welker, galloway)
It was an absolutely insane move on the Patriot's part. There was no reason not to keep Cassell, suck up the cap space for a year, and have some insurance against Brady getting hurt again or just not coming back to a strong level of play. Even hall of fame QB's are subject to the harsh physical realities of the NFL and aging. I would not be surprised if Brady got hurt again this season - in fact I think the odds favor it given his lesser mobility and New England's dicey pass protection schemes that try to hold up pass rushers long enough for the QB to get a throw off and that give up lots of QB contact in the immediate aftermath.
If they kept Cassell they would have had over 30 million tied up in the QB position. I don't know who they wouldn't have because of that but I'm sure it would have been at least a few others.
while jets fans everywhere would have rejoiced because it would have meant the pats had no money to improve anywhere else.....
I guess I'm willing to grant that Bellichek knows what he's doing, knows what he has and doesn't have behind Brady. Nearly everyone critiqued him here for going with Cassell and not even bringing in someone else after Brady went down last year, and they were proven wrong. Ironically it's probably the same ones who said he was foolish to stay with Cassell last year, that are saying this year he was foolish to NOT keep him.
Agreed. The man has demonstrated that he can develop unheralded low rounders into serviceable to stellar QBs. I'm sure he feels that a couple of seasons in the system will allow O'Connell to step in admirably should Brady sustain another injury.
Do you think REX won't make these guys think like Rabid dogs!!!?? "There's your meat you filthy animals, Go Get it!" 3 things on this. -Might actually make it worth wile for the season Home opener -Gholstons chance to make fans forget (til the followiing week) -This could easily become a "Bellytrap" for the young Rex. Bellicheck is a master of disguise.
