I agree, but if there were ever a player I'd want the Yanks to overpay, it's Mauer. He's the kind of player that the Yanks should use every penny of their financial advantage to obtain. Pohlad offers $25 million/year? Offer $35 million.
It's almost impossible to overstate the value of a catcher with excellent defense that would be one of the best hitters in baseball no matter what position he plays. He needs to go the free agent market, just to see what happens. If he does someone is going to offer him something insane like 10 years 350 million. I think he would be well worth it too. It probably would be better for baseball if he stayed in Minnesota, but the thought of him in a Sox uniform makes me very happy in the pants.
Maybe... but only for someone like Mauer. If they throw ridiculous money at Holliday, I'm going to be pissed. Bingo. If he stays in Minny, it's not going to be for the money.
Dick move by Girardi yanking Gaudin with 1 out bottom 5. At 90 pitches, give him a chance to get out of the inning and be eligible for the W.
he had a 1 hitter going and was at 90 pitches. Girardi should've allowed him to try and complete the inning.
Agreed, but I also understand why Girardi made the move. They're trying to win games, have a rested pen, and a day off tomorrow.
Gaudin did good for us. Ate up innings and deserved to get that W. Nice to win with the 5th starter going, but is this really the answer for the rest of the year?
No matter what the excuse was Girardi wanted to win that game and Gaudin had completely lost the plate. 2 walks and 1 HBP to load the bases with no outs. He needed to be pulled. As it was they got out of that inning and still only won 3-2.
Gaudin and Mitre are. Mitre hasn't gone anywhere and they are really using a pseudo 6 man rotation with Chamberlain only pitching every 8 or 9 days now. There are more off days coming up so we will see how that changes things.
Joba Chamberlain says he will make a half-dozen starts between Tuesday and the end of the regular season. If Chamberlain averages what he has done in the first 23 outings -- a little short of six innings per start -- he would finish with 156 2/3 innings, which would fit in nicely with the Yankees' season-long mission of limiting the right-hander's innings. "We have figured out a plan that will keep me as regular as possible," Chamberlain said after throwing an extended bullpen session yesterday before the Yankees' 3-2 victory over the Athletics. EXLAX? http://www.nypost.com/seven/0820200...ays_he_can_start_6_more_during_reg_185461.htm And since there is no limit on him in the post-season this is better know as the "Cashman +60-100 or whatever it takes to save my job plan for young pitchers".
Come on already Don. If they make the playoffs, all bets are off, as is always the case, with every player. No postseason is guaranteed, so you take advantage whenever you make it. But beyond that, and I know I've said this before, you just continually ignore it, but Joba won't make any starts in October. He will pitch out of the pen, so tops he'll pitch an additional 38 innings, and that would only happen if they pitched him every single game of the playoffs, for two innings an outing, and every series lasted the full length of games. More realistically, he'll pitch 7-10 additional innings above what he ends the season with. Maybe not even that much with Sabathia and Burnett starting, and Hughes in the pen. We get it Don. You don't like Cashman. Stop trying to fabricate arguments against him.
