Listen, I know practice is very different than actual games, but since Sanchez was named starter for Baltimore, he has been consistently outplayed by Clemens in practice each day. Now obviously, I'm not at Cortland to see this for myself, and rely on the twitter updates and news clippings, but he has thrown a bunch of INT's and incompletions this week. Does anybody have any first hand info on this?
me too but they also said clemens is doing better then he has been. but really maybe he is just a shitty practice qb and hits his stride game day:grin:
Let's see who does what Monday night..the rest is just drivel. So much for this thread. "As the Jets QB battle continues, Mark Sanchez and Kellen Clemens end the day in a dead heat. Clemens completed 7-11 on the day, with Sanchez 7-12. Each threw one INT."
"so much for this thread"? have you seen the updates every day? One session of even competition, and we should stop talking about it?
Ok, How about this one: QBs Kellen Clemens and Mark Sanchez continue to perform fairly evenly and there's no decision yet on a starter. "I want to make a decision as fast as possible, but it's going to be a prudent decision," Jets coach Rex Ryan said.
Looks like Ryan noticed it too: Head coach Rex Ryan has backed off from his previous statement that he will choose the starting quarterback before preseason game against the New York Giants. Earlier today Ryan said that the quarterback competition was "almost status quo" and the decision would be made when "the timing is right." Such a change is most likely caused by QB Mark Sanchez' struggles in recent practice sessions, while QB Kellen Clemens has noticeably improved since the first preseason game. Hopefully, the next preseason game against Ryan's former team, the Baltimore Ravens, will help break this stalemate between the two Jets' quarterbacks. Meanwhile, both Sanchez and Clemens went 5 of 8 in 11-on-11 drills this morning. Then, Sanchez threw another interception in the afternoon.
Last Friday proved that what goes on in a preseason game is way more important than 7s, 9, and 11 on 11 drills. let's see what happens on friday.
The way things are going, Im kind of expecting Clemens to be starting on opening day. He's been more or less steady and consistent, without being too bland; his one real drive in the first game was solid, he threw the ball down the field, completed throws, and got into scoring range. Thats exactly what Rex should be looking for if he wants to win with defense. Sanchez has been a roller coaster so far. I like his talent, but seriously... i was watching ESPN today, and Schefter said something along the lines of, "After his completion in the first preseason game, Sanchez is far and away the favorite to win the job." Regardless of what some idiot pundits say and how many fans 'ooh'd at the game, you don't win a job with one completion (regardless of the fact that it was a damn nice throw). He's got talent, but all indications are that he doesn't have the level of consistency that you need from a starter on the kind of team Rex is trying to build. I like the future with Sanchez, but I think Clemens is the guy who can win games in 09. And he deserves a shot, its ludicrous to draft a guy, be moderately impressed with him for four years, have a constant QB carousel, and never give the guy a legit shot at being the guy. If he's good enough to be in the conversation, and Sanchez can't eliminate the seemingly 50% chance that he completes less than 50% of his throws on any given day, then theres no reason to rush Sanchez in.
Yeah, there is no consistency to anything about the QB competition. Sanchez was better last week. Clkemens had two good days this week and they were even today. The thread seems to say that Clemens is beating Sanchez's ass..it's not true. "he has been consistently outplayed by Clemens in practice each day." is just nonsense.
He's a rookie, that's what's up with him. Ugh, I have a feeling this board is going to get pretty ugly this season. Then again, that's always true.
I think the media will be driving for QB controversey all season long. My guess is now that Sanchez is named the starter in Baltimore all reports will be that much more critical. There job is to sell stories and no story sells better than QB controversey. Whoever loses this QB battle will wind up the media darling unless the other guy plays like a pro bowler or the team wins.
Stu, Clemens has thrown more Picks in pratice than Sanchez has. By a lot. How exactly is one a roller coaster and the other consistant? If anything I think both of them have had far too many ups and downs. Clemens missed the pressue leading to a Strip sack, fumble, and 3 points to the Rams. It's not all his fault, but strong side pressure has to be recognized quicker by the QB. He regained his composure and avoided the sack in the next drive. That was a good play but did not completely make up for the fumble. his drive also sputtered to 3 points. Sanchez has had his issues in pratice as well. His deep throw showed many good traits though. He looked the safty over to the opposite side of the felid, pump faked, and then threw a perfect deep ball over to Clowny. A very nice play where he displayed a good deal of poise in the pocket and smarts on not only his throw but what to do before he got rid of the ball. I think if the compition stays close the kid is goign to get the nod. Clemens has to show somethign special to take the job and I do not think he has somethign special to show us.
Of course he's going to struggle at times, he's a rookie. Nothing to be too concerned about at this point.
watched practice Monday Morning. People who I was with and not into the Jets as much as I was had this to say: Sanchez throws softer (not in the touch sense), Clemens had some zip, but Ainge had the strongest arm. Also, Sanchez was surprisingly small, did not attempt any out passes. Clemens was very good with the out passes. We may have a problem Houston. It's all gonna come down to whether Sanchez has the intangibles. Like Pennington, he is going to have to be accurate and anticipate routes and receiver positioning. He is not going to gun anything by any DB.
