I think paying a backup this kind of money is pushing it.. Way to much money on the table right now, he is not the long term starter, so why this much money? Just dumb. If he doesn't take that, then I don't care what happens to Washington from this point forward.
He will be making the same as Jones at 5 mil. I wonder if they are getting ready to cut or trade Jones because he sure as shit won't be any happier now.
The honest truth is we only have a handful of gamebreakers offensively and he is a big part of that equation. Also, we all know he isn't being used to his full effectiveness. Does he deserve MJD money.....naturally you can say he hasn't proved enough to ask for that BUT it wasn't Leon who first asked for an extension. If memory serves correctly, the jets approached him about it first. 5 million will seem like a bargain if we use him like we are supposed too....
There are only so many offensive plays in a game so who is the odd man out if they use him like you want?
it was a front loaded contract. He's made 13 mil, and he's making 900k this year, and then the remainder of the contract next year. Since he's dead weight, i'd like to see his production this year.
Is Leon 1 of our Best Players? YES Is this Best player Money? NO Is this Money Fair for someone of his caliber? NO Is this Money Fair for someone according to the #'s he puts up? YES So, what we have here is Potential vs Production. I think there are a few teams willing to give Leon more $$$ but If I were Leon I would take this deal just to build off of it. Agents are greedy a-holes. But how many years in a row do I have to say this? The JETS refuse to give $$$ to their best young players. They Let the talent go and never replace them. Leon is irreplaceable and don't give me that RB's are a dime a dozen BS.
Average RBs are a dime a dozen. There aren't many Petersons around. That is why the average of the top 5 RBs in the league is only 6.6 million. Everybody seems to make more than they do.
Now that's different than just saying "RB's are a D-A-D." ...on that note, as I said, Leon is NOT avg.-IMO
Thomas Jones is a grinder and is in his last year...seems like he should get less touches this year. Still, we will run the ball more then last season so there will be plenty of carries for everyone. Leon should get 275+ touches this year including his special teams work.
Greene will probably get the majority of touches inside the red zone so don't forget him. I don't see enough plays to go around and give him what you think he will get..not unless somebody goes. Washington had 76 carries last year. He is not going to get 200 receptions and I really don't care about his punt returns.
That's a serious consideration Don. Do you get the feeling alot of teams are just waiting for '10 so they can dump dead weight?
Hmm....guess there is a good reason you are the Rich Kotite award winner Guess I am done here.... From MMQB 11 a.m., Monday (New York Jets camp, Cortland, N.Y.): The happiest man in New York Jets camp -- other than Rex Ryan, who waited 23 years to be a head coach and walks around most of the time grinning like a kid -- is all-purpose running back Leon Washington. It certainly isn't because of his contract (Washington and the Jets are haggling over a deal that's likely to get done this summer in the $6-million-a-year range). Rather, this is about Ryan's love for Washington and what he can mean to the Jets' offense and special teams. Washington touched the ball 123 times from scrimmage last year, a ridiculously low number for one of football's 10 most dangerous players. That's about to change. There were only a few hundred people in the stands to watch the Jets' morning practice on this day, but they made their feelings known chants of "LEEE-on, LEEE-on," was the gist of it. Twice. The knock on Washington is that he is too small, at 197 pounds, to withstand the beating an NFL running back must take if he touches the ball 15 or 20 times a game. Bad logic. Over a three-year period late in his career, Tiki Barber had the most combined rushes and receptions of any back in football. He weighed almost 10 pounds more than Washington. So, if you say to me that Washington can't touch the ball 300 times rushing and receiving, I say to you: You don't know. "In my rookie year,'' Washington said, "I touched it 176 times and I never got hurt. I know what Tiki did. And my idol when I was younger was Marshall Faulk. He wasn't a lot bigger than me. They couldn't give him the ball enough." Ryan has already told Washington the Jets will feed him the ball a lot more than he got it last year. How much is that? Ryan doesn't know. "But the thing I want people to understand about me," Washington said, "is that I want the ball so I can help the team win. I don't want the ball so I can just be a stat guy." The way Ryan sees it, Washington's going to be both this fall. Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/08/09/mmqb/index.html#ixzz0OfCjDyAj
I hope Leon takes the offer! It's a very good offer, especially considering the Jets have good leverage right now with the CBA stuff going on...
Agreed! He won't find a better offer anywhere else and with Jones being gone next year his roll will increase more.
Jones is due over 6 mill next year. I doubt he will see a penny of it before the Jets cut him unless Greene is a huge flop.
