So while everybody from the NFL Network to the beat writers to the fans are knocking the Jet receivers and waiting for the Jets to bring in some veteran. I think the Jets receivers are fine and that most people are missing the boat. I say this for three reasons. First, the Jet receivers are young and it takes 2-3 years for a receiver to contribute in the NFL. Stuckey, Clowney, and Smith are all about to hit that 3 year break out stage this year or next. We have to be patient and let them play in order for them to develop. Stuckey caught 30 passes for almost 400 yards last year in a part time role. Whose to say that he can't double that as a starter - 60 catches and 800 yards. Clowney may be the deep threat the Jets have needed for years now. We won't know, however, until he plays in a real NFL game. Second, everybody is forgetting Keller. Keller is really a WR dressed up as a TE. If Keller were a WR and the Jets had a pedestrian TE, would there really be the clamoring for a WR there is now? I don't think so. Third, there is no veteran out there worth adding. Unless a trade is coming for Boldin or Marshall (doubtful after yesterday's acquittal) or Edwards (doubtful after Stallworth's suspension), the only veterans out there are has beens and never will bes who will just stunt the growth of the current young Jet receivers.
Keller is going to have a huge season. I'm not a Fantasy Football fan....if I was, I'd have Keller on my team.
Keller looks bigger this year. His YAC abilities are amazing. I remember last year when he refused to go down even in preseason, and its showing again how the 1st man never brings him down.
I'm willing to give the WR's a pass this year. I agree about Keller, he's a beast of a TE, and he lines up wide a lot anyways. But I'll be the first guy bitching if the WR's are exposed as a weakness.
So what should the Jets have done in the offseason in your opinion? Bitching later is somewhat of a cop out.
There's a really good argument for just standing pat and letting the WR's sort themselves out. WR's are like CB's: as long as they are decent you're fine. A 50 catch WR occupies one of the other team's cornerbacks regardless of how talented the defender is. You just don't throw that way if he's overmatched and you're playing 10 on 10 instead of 11 on 11.

The Jets don't have a single receiver that calls for double coverage. That in itself will allow defenses to throw an extra man in the box to defend against the run. Since Ryan says he wants to run first that will put them at a distinct disadvantage. They need a number 1 or at least a number 2+ which they don't currently have.
Please define what a #1 receiver is? How does a receiver achieve the exalted status of being a #1? Are receivers born as #1s? Do they demonstrate #1 status in college? Who are this year's #1s? Can you give me a list so I can compare that to how they performed this season? Does the system make a #1 or does the #1 make the system? Would Marcus Colston be a #1 on a team that doesn't throw 600 passes a season? Would Cotchery put up Colston-like numbers or better if he played for the Saints? Does the QB have anything to do with being a #1? Is Marshall still a #1 with Kyle Orton throwing to him? Does Hester now have #1 status with Cutler at QB? Was Chad Johson a #1 from 2004-2007 and then drop to a #2 or #3 last year? Why? Greg Jennings caught 45 passes for 632 yards in 2006. He caught 80 passes for 1292 yards last year. Was he a #1 in 2006? Could you tell he was going to be a #1 in 2006? What made him a #1 in 2008 that didn't make him a #1 in 2006 or 2007? Same with Roddy White. He caught 30 passes for 506 yards in 2006 and by 2008 it was 88 passes for 1382 yards. Vincent Jackson went from 27 catches for 453 yards in 2006 to 59 catches for 1098 yards last year. What made them #1s? This #1 WR label is one of the biggest bunch of BS that I have ever heard about NFL football.
I agree with you completely WSW. And seeing your response to Don ^^^ I agree even more. Lets see what these guys can do. I would so much prefer to develop players than constantly be trying to sign them as FA's on the downside of their career curve.
so what you are saying is ...... that regardless of talent, physicality, and previous achievements... david clowney can put up similar numbers to randy moss given the correct enviroment? not to mention how he impacts an opponents defensive game plan? i do not disagree with you much whiteshoes, but i must in this scenario.
Here is the thing.... GB loved Clowney, but he kept getting hurt. We pick him up last year. He blows away all the other WR's in last year's preseason, (stat-wise)and gets hurt again. Granted, his last preseason was against two's and three's, but last night was against ones. He gets healthy last year, and Mangini won't let him suit up. Mangini is gone now. Clowney is all about speed.... a deep threat the likes of which the Jets haven't had since the one eyed man. Clowney again lit up again in the preseason, but this time against the ones defense of the Rams. IF, big IF Clowney can stay healthy, start across from Cotch with Stuckey in the slot.... opposing D's will have to keep an eye on Clowney, or he can burn them. I don't think most CB's in the NFL can stay wiyh him deep. That will also open up Keller for being covered by an LB. The FS will have to worry about both Keller and Clowney. The caveat is... the starting QB. I've always liked Clemens, but he can't hit Clowney deep, Sanchez looks like he can. Clowney may not demand a double team, but he just might be enough of a deep threat to keep a saefty out of the box.
Agreed. I really would like to see what some of these WR's can do. If the Jets were on the verge of being a SB contender I would feel different but right now I have no problem going with what we have now.
Green Bay loved Clowney? They cut him before the season started, and he was a draft pick. He was on the team for too small a time for GB to just cut him from him getting injured too much
My guess is GB has better receivers and it was a matter of numbers at that point. Plus he's not all that bright.
Here's the thing... you can only do so many upgrades in an off season. You can't manage to plug every hole. We are blessed with having a young group of guys. This year they will end up getting some much needed experience and we will get to see who out of the group will step up as a player. Maybe in the end we find out we are still hurting at receiver. Next year we work on improving the position. Like I said, you can only do so much in a given amount of time and with a set amount of money and picks. Shoring up the QB situation is a precedent over WR everytime, so I think the team went in the right direction. Let's just wait and see what these guys can or can't do first before bitching about what should of been.
I didnt really read what anyone said on this thread yet, so sorry if this is a repeat, but I think the Jets should bring in Marvin Harrison, he would be a great mentor for the young wideouts (ie britt davis, clowney, and stuckey). Plus he is a great rout runner, if anything he would atleast be the perfect third down wide out
