The Jets bought the risk of the Packers investigating whether Jets were complicit in permitting Favre to join a NFC North team using a 7th round pick. The pick is a small price to pay for eliminating an expensive investigation with the risk of forfeiting several first round draft picks.
I believe 6? 1st 2nd 4th 5th 6th 7th The 3rd went to the Pack for Favre. I'm completely baffled as to why we'd give them that 7th back though.
The 2009 draft's 3rd went for Favre. I'm pretty sure we have a third this year but we owe a conditional pick to the Eagles for Sheppard.
I don't get it then either. I know there's a limit to how many draft picks you can own but it's clearly more than 7.

My guess is that Jets were concerned before trading for Sanchez that retired Favre may unretire. Remember he was only released AFTER they successfully traded for and drafted Sanchez. Tannenbaum probably sent the pick back to GB as a sign of good faith that the Favre experiment was over and that they were truly not interested in Favrapooloza with the Vikings. However he needed to have Sanchez in place first before cutting Favre and sending the pick to GB.
Just a quick addition - in the article, Thomspon referenced "procedural" issues regarding the draft picks. If Favre "unretired" after he "retired" the Jets would not be receiving a 7th Rd pick from GB. Had that happened, and if the Jets had included GB's 2010 7th Rd pick in a draft day trade (like for Shonn Greene or for Sanchez) it would have caused some problems. Instead this procedural move cleared up a bunch of issues - it demonstrated good faith by the Jets with GB and Tannenbaum was able to clearly negotiate with other teams about what picks he had in 2009 and 2010.

What would have happened IF the Jets had thought about or been asked about trading that 2010 7th Rd pick at the 2009 draft? That was probably the discussion Tannenbaum had if it came up in regards to the Sanchez and/or Greene trades. Better to send the damn thing back and be done with Favrapooloza than deal with this down the road.
it seems like unnecessary compensation to me. who the fuck deals in good faith in the nfl? i havent heard of good faith in the nfl in about 20 years.
There have been plenty of quality players drafted in the 7th or later rounds.... I think Matt Hassleback as well as Mark Bulger were both drafted in the 7th round.
