Alvin Keels is a faggot, he probably refuses to read any article that goes against what he believes.

He was a threat before he started getting injured.

    He is.

    Clearly.

Jones Drew gets many more touches. And Leon had more all purpose yards.(As I pointed out he is a game changing player that plays on 2 phases of the game...)

Jones Drew does not return kicks all that much, so he isn't changing field position on every return sequence.

Also, on about a third of the carries, Leon put up HALF as much yardage.

You should really try this cool thing..It's called a browser. you can open two and look at their stats side by side.

And Leon is still underutilized. He should get about 8 touches more a game...(2 per qtr)

When TJ is done, you're going to see Leon in a Westbrook type role with Shonn Greene bing the hammer. You pay Leon the 6 he is already worth now over 5 years and two things happen.

By year 2 or 3, salaries go up making him look like a bargain, and his use increases making him look like a bargain.

Leon is already the Jets best playmaker with the ball in his hands....period.

    Secondly, Oakland????? Oakland???? AYFKM?

How did the best WR since Jerry Rice do while he was there?

Seems to be much better in NE iirc...

Good to see that Hobbs3259 found the Jets kool-aid.

Leon Washington has made some great plays but lets not put the kid in the HOF just yet.

Looking at cap numbers, I found this little gem:

    Leon's cap hit in 2009: $642,314

    James Dearth's cap hit in 2009: $945,000

Now, I will say that I think James Dearth is better at his job than Leon Washington is at his, but it's about the value of the contribution.

The law firm's future partner isn't making as much as the law firm's excellent receptionist.

Is Leon an elite running back? As of right now, no, he really hasn't had the chance to show us how he could do with 20+ carrys under Mangini.

Is Leon an elite talent? Oh yeah. One of the most explosive players in the game today once he breaks off into the open field.

Leon is asking for 6 million and the Jets have offered 2 million right? It would be a great deal for both sides if we were to lock up Leon for 5 years-20 Million, that would mean that both sides met half way while accepting 4 million per year.

Hence, James Dearth should be cut...once a replacement is found.

6 million is not HoF $$$

It is what a guy that can put up 3,000 all purpose yards should be earning.

Why give Leon 6 million per year? (I love the guy), but...

He's only asking for 6 million per year, because deep down inside, he knows that he's never going to get that type of $$$ from the Jets front office, It's a negotiation price.

The Jets front office has offered Leon 2 million per year, they honestly know that Leon will never accept a deal for only 2 million per year, it's a negotiation offer.

Now...This is where the deal gets done; 5 years-20 million dollars, which is an average of 4 million per year (Both sides go half way and meet somewhere in the middle, 4 million per).

Compared to what Leon is making as of right now now, compared to what he's been making over the past 3 years, compared to what he will be making over the next couple of years with the Jets-It would be insane for him to turn down an offer of 4 million per year.

Hell no, man! You find an excellent receptionist/long snapper, you fucking keep her/him! Unless that bitch/asshole starts complaining about sexual harassment/shanking snaps, then you ditch her/him, bring in somebody with bigger tits/a smaller contract.

there is a reason for that. it's called not being a feature back. if you saw leon get the same carries as MJD he wouldn't carry close to the same average. i figured that was pretty clear. he is not... a feature back.

The point is: paying Leon 6 mill now is an unjustified gamble.
If next year was an UFA year for him then you could decide to take it and see where it goes... but (and this is Leon's bad luck) being he'll be a RFA what's the worst thing that can happen for the Jets? He plays brilliant this year and you'll have to give him 6 mill anyways! And if he doesn't live up to his standard you pay him less and you were right to wait.

If he believes in himself so much he should play his contract out and have a shot at the 6 mill... If he is afraid of future injuries and stuff like that I'd settle for something in the 4 mill range... but there is NO WAY he get's 5 or 6 mill now... It just doesn't make sense.

Ps and 6 mill a year IS feature back money. Especially since teams have mostly switched to 2 or even 3 RBs sharing the load.

no kidding. they will NOT cave into leon's demands at 6 mill before the season. that holdout wont last long from leon either. with his 600k salary he's not going to take that ridiculous daily fine.

First of all, let's get our facts straight. Leon put up approx 2,000 all purpose yards last year. The year before he put up approx 1,800 all purpose yards. The addition of Shonne Green in this year's draft will most likely keep Leon from getting much more than 2,000 combined yards this year unless other RBs on our roster get hurt.

If Leon puts up 3,000 combined yards this year then $6 mil might be reasonable. However, if we are talking about marginal performance at RB and all pro return stats, Joshua Cribbs should make for an interesting comparison. Before breaking out for a pro bowl performance in 2007, Crinns signed a seven year $6.77 mil contract extension in 2006. Although Cribbs is only due $645,000 this season and may hold out, Manginin and the Browns front office are playing hardball.

The Jets are holding all of the cards here. Leon will earn almost nothing this year if his contract is not extended. If he proves that he can be an all-pro RB and not just a kick returner the team can franchise or extend him AFTER he has proven his worth. With the opportunity to wait and see what Leon does this year I think the Jets would be crazy to give him more than $4 mil per year until they see if he is worth it. Also, players usally produce much better in a contract year so extending him before the season could be counterproductive.

This post would only make sense if you happen to think MJD is a future HOFer, which so far he is not even close. Otherwise you're putting words in Hobbes' mouth. I agree with him that Leon is the best playmaker on the team, and I think he has the athletic ability and football skills to be a bigger impact player than MJD, if put in position to succeed. The problem is, he hasn't really been given the best chance to succeed.

I don't think 4-5M for Leon is that unrealistic. 6 is probably pushing it, though.

    6 is pushing it. Today.

My belief in contracts of this nature, is you pay a premium up front, and go long so that in years 3,4,5 you have a bargain price. And that is a double with Leon, because he is at this point under utilized...

With Jones most likely off the books next year (unless they 50/50 his remaining cash to even him out at 3mil per) you are only moving the salary from one player to the next anyway, and you can up Leon's offensive touches maybe 8 a game (1 catch 1 carry per qtr..)..

The point our friend here is missing is what the driving factor behind salaries really is...

Why do WR's make big $$$ for 8 or 9 touches a game? Same thing with Corners (And they can't catch...)..

Is that really more valuable than 25 carries?

The actual driving force behind salaries, is the inherent lack of ability to replace that skillset.

What Leon does for the offense cannot be replaced by any other player or combination of players....it's that simple....
