The mystery surprise is Kareem Brown. He catches passes like Anquan Boldin crossed with DeWayne Robertson.

If I've said it once, then I've said it a million times. Wallace Wright slips. There's no rhyme or reason to it. Whether he's trying to slow down, stop, juke someone, call for the ball, play hackey sack, or sit at home on the couch, he falls the fuck down for no apparent reason. I should make a montage of it.

    It's not Wright.

"I asked what he thought about the competition for the second wide reciever slot and Ryan extolled the virtues of Chansi Stuckey, Brad Smith, David Clowney and Wallace Wright, but then made this statement."

"“And I think they’ll be a surprise coming out as receiver as well,” Ryan said."

So, he talks about those guys and then mentions a "surprise" as well.

Woodhead in the slot ala Wes Welker or Wayne Chrebet. What safety or inside LB could keep up with him? We already have depth at RB.

Maybe this is actually it. I know they wanted Stuckey in the slot, but if they feel that Woodhead could shine in the slot too, it would allow them to put Stuckey outside. This would serve two purposes:

    1) Fill our WR needs for the coming season

    2) Force Woodhead onto the field, which could be potentially used as leverage against Washington for his contract since they are considered to be similar in play style and build.

Just because he's small and white doesn't mean he can be the next Chrebet or Welker

This dude is a RB, not a WR...And David Clowney is quicker, faster and much more of a natural type of WR than "Woodhead". I would much rather see Clowney as our slot WR because I cant see LB's or Safetys keeping up with him either...He ran a freaking 4.3 40 and in high school was clocked @ 4.2

I always just assumed Woodhead was black - never saw him. After reading your post I had to do a google image search to check - and yeah - he is white.

Anyway - Clowney is not a slot receiver. He failed there in GB as he's not one to take a hit over the middle, plus his speed is more straight line speed better used on the outside.

Well, then, lets keep Stuckey in the slot-Anyone but "Woodhead" because this would be worse than the Brad Smith experiment because he was a freaking QB trying to play the role of a WR and it wasn't working (Thanks Mangini) And it still hasn't worked.

But still, Clowney is only 24 years of age, he's only been in the league for 2 years...And the Packers never even gave him a chance as their slot WR

No love for Britt Davis :p? After all he did survive all the cuts since being signed and we have quite a few camp fodders at the WR position...

    Quote from Rex(y):

“He’s a tough kid. They bounce him around and he just bounces back up,” Ryan said of Woodhead, whose rookie season ended in training camp when he tore his left knee. “He gives as well as he takes. The other thing I noticed is he can really catch the football.”

Does color matter here? I'm naming shifty, quick, tough guys who were good at catching out of the slot and taking a hit afterwards. I'm thinking of a 2 yard, quick pass and a converted RB making guys miss because they are shiftier than a WR per say. In this offense, it looks like we are not going to be throwing bombs downfield so we need someone tough inside. Clowney has shown more of being an outside guy. He is not built to take big hits.

Mambo9 posted some interesting quotes supporting my guess though.

Well, then, if we plan on putting Clowney on the outside because of his blazing speed...That means Stuckey has to be our slot WR because Stuckey was a 2nd year player / 1st year starter last year and he did pretty good out of the slot position. With the playing time and experience that Stuckey gained last year, he should be "that much better" here in 09. Honestly...I'm pulling for Stuckey as our #2 WR and thats because of the playing time and experience which doesn't mean everything but remember in 2006 when Cotchery had his breakout year? He was a 1st year starter at that.

    Cotchery
    Stuckey
    Clowney

    Keller
    Leon

Could get some things done in the passing game. Atleast we know we have that #1 WR in Cotchery who can make the tough catch, pick up the tough 1st down and move the chains as good as anyone because he's a a really solid possession WR and we also have an elite pass catching talent @ the TE position in Keller. Lets just hope we can get some above average production from the slot WR position because I'm confident in Stuckey=That kid showed talent last year.

Just because he illudes to 'with pads on' does not necessarily mean he is talking about someone from OTAs. That reference is used plenty about any player 'putting the pad on'. I think he is talking about someone not on the roster. If it was someone in the roster why wouldn't he talk them up by name. He has done that incessantly since the beginning.

Could we be making a run at a player such as Matt Jones?
