He hasn't been hitting well this year, but he could still help a team out

It's always amazing to see the mighty fall.

Don't laugh 17a, he could help a club, especially in the NL. It's hard to believe his OPS just dropped 200+ points in one year. If he's released, you take a risk on him. What's the worst that could happen? It's not like you'd be trading anything for him.

Hell, given the opportunity, I'd take him over Skippity Dipshit on the Yankees.

The Mets already have a monopoly on shitty or old right-handed corner outfielders, thanks.

Also for whatever reason, be it lack of sleep or lack of smart, my thoughts went immediately to Rey Ordonez when I read this thread title.

They'd only do it if another team would pick up his contract (or at least a good portion of it). If not, I assume they'd retract waivers. They're not going to pay his salary so he can play for another team.

Just about any team would want him if the Tigers paid his salary and they could get him on the cheap.

That's why I would think the Tigers would try to deal him for something while offering to pay a good chunk of the remaining salary.

    they waived sheff???

besides who would trade for him when you could just lay low and pounce when he is cut.

wouldnt they just put him on waivers and then the mets would have to pick up his huge contract, i really dont think its worth it if they have to pay him 15 million, but at minimum hes a bargain

what about the yankees who are rumoured to want to move matsui. he could resurrect his career in pinstripes. many others have been succesful in doing so.

because like I said, they know the Tigers aren't going to pick up his entire contract so he can play for another team.

The Sheff thing makes it even less likely that they'd eat another big OF contract, IMO.

he has been getting paid so a $15 million contract is actually $7.5 right now. and if the mets where to pick him up and agree to a contract for $1 million like pedro then the tigers only have to pay $6.5 mil for the rest of the year.

Because they won't be able to move Matsui.

The Yankees are the one team that doesn't really need to go after Ordonez.

That's the first set of waivers. I assume they'd do that for sure and see if anyone is willing to pick up the remainder of the contract. That's very unlikely.

if a player is waived only the team that originally signed the million $$ contract is on the hook for that money.whatever that player signs for with another team comes off what the original team still owes on the original contract.

a traded player, now his contract is picked up by the aquiring team

That's not how waivers work. First of all, unless it's trade waivers it can't be retracted. In this case it would almost certainly be unconditional release waivers because he's out of options (ruling out optional waivers) and if he wasn't claimed off outright waivers the Tigers would either have to keep him with the team or send him to the minors and still pay his salary. Trade waivers are completely unnecessary at this point because the trade deadline has not passed.

If he is claimed off of waivers, the claiming team, not the Tigers, pays the rest of his salary, which is what they want so they would have no reservations about doing this. Teams are unlikely to claim him though, because they can simply wait for the waiver period to expire and sign him for much cheaper anyway.

The Tigers are likely to try to trade him, but because the move is basically to free salary it's highly unlikely that they would offer to pay his salary to get something in return. They are far more likely to simply place him on URW's and be done with it.
