Blah blah blah blah blah blah. I'm Joe. My logic doesn't work but I make up for it by having a large stockpile of utter bullshit to spew out of my mouth.
You make a quote about how light Leonard in the same post you talk about how the Raiders have no linebackers over 250 lbs? Raiders were 2nd to last in 2008 at stopping the run, and the solution was to improve the pass rush? Doesn't make sense to me.
And yet...we finished 7th in the league with 41 sacks and the Raiders finished 13th in the league with 32. Talk about a waste. All that talent and nobody on the Raiders know how to utilize it.
You didn't answer my question. What has Alston done in the NFL. As for T Howard (I assume you're talking about Thomas Howard don't know who W Howard is...) I never denied his abilities he is a great LB. But this Alston kid has done jackshit at this level and you are already hyping him up to be an effective player. He is yet to prove anything you've said, but Scott has proved himself at this level to be a good player. He can rush the passer in addition to his coverage abilities. I could care less if you think his success was determined by Baltimore's scheme. Firstly, it wasn't, secondly, Baltimore's scheme followed him to the NYJ. We will see who's passrush sucks next season.... Our passrush was inconsistent last season, but the NYJ still had more sacks than the Raiders did last year (41 to 32). Why is that Jeaux? Was the height, weight and 40 times of the opposing offensive lines the reason we racked up that many QB sacks?
Pressure is more important than sacks. Ravens might not have got the sack but they forced the Qb into mistakes.(having to get rid of football real fast- see how manhy interceptions Ravens had also) There was a reason why opposing Qbs had all day to throw against Jets defense. Jets pass defense was ranked 29th. If Jets had a decent pass rush that number would be never be that bad. There is also a reason why alot of young Qbs had there best day against Jets-No pressure. Vernon Gholston better start living up to his expectations or this jet defense not going to be any better.
I broke it down in another post. J alston was an undersized LB 217-220 (big reason why he hasn't started) Been a special team demon. . This year he up to 235 is alot stronger, and hasn't lost any of his blazing speed. (just as fast as Thomas Howard) . Like Thomas Howard, alston has demonstrated some serious man to man skills in coverage. The only question Alston has to answer to become starting Sslb, is how he holds up against the run. Raiders new Defensive coordinator John marshall( Seattle ex Dc) prefers lightning quick Lbs that excel in coverage. There is reason alston and UDfa david Nixon are going to be hugh players for this defense. Again look at seattle lbs and see how they were used. Listen I don't care if you don't think Bart scott sucess was due to Ravens personel around him. We soon are going to find out if that was the case. (remember who predicted correctly the problems jets lb woiuld have in coverage last year) . JMO you put Eric barton on ravens and his coverage ability would have looked as good as Scott. Comeon you watched the Jet games, almost every game the Qb was sitting back there surveying the field(with all day to throw) You had no CONSISTANT PASS RUSH.(if you claim otherwise than i question if you really watched any Jet games) Teams couldn't run on Jets , so they threw on the 29th pass defense.(Opposing QB looking to make a big play against bad pass defense just took too long of a nap - Jets got a sack. More chances is going to equal more chances of sacks. Raiders on the other hand couldn't stop the run. Teams didn't even try and pass, as they were contempt to just run it. FOr example watch the diffrence in raiders /Jet game. Favre goes back and every single time he threw football Raiders defensivelineman were hitting/'killing him. (why he threw so many interceptions and russelll didn't throw one.(no pressure all game) That was without there top pass rusher. IN conclusion sacks are overrated if your not getting consistant pressure. case in Point Osi (from giants) had like 7or 8 sacks in one game against winston Justice couple years ago. IF he wasn't getting consistant pressure on Qb, those numbers wouldn't mean as much.(that one game and there are fifteen more games) I know it didn't happen but just say Osi finshed with 9 sacks on the year and 7 or eight were in that one game. What happened in the rest of the games) Just showing why sacks stat alone is not good barometer for how effective a team pass rush was.(anyone that saw Jets know opposing Qb had too much time in most games) BTW C pace and B thomas haven't had one double digit sack year. Not happening this year either with Pace missing the first four games. Calvin pace and B Thomas your counting on to be ytour top pass rushers. your in serious trouble. There is a reason Jets drafted Vernon gholston with the six pick.(he was suppose to help a weak area)
So by your logic CB Chris Johnson and CB Stanford Routt's 'incredible' seasons are in fact diminished because teams simply ran all over the Raiders? You're praising a linebacker who, in your own words, has yet to prove he can hold up against the run.... I am praising a linebacker who has proven he can hold up against the run, blitz, play in coverage and has even been to a pro-bowl. Listen, I don't care if John Marshall likes quick LBs. Rod Marinelli liked quick Cover 2 LBs and they didn't win a single fuckin' game. You describing Alston's special teams skills, height, weight and 40 time gives zero indication or proof of anything you say he's capable of. Where have you seen him play so well in coverage? 4 games at the end of last season? Very impressive, must have been all that talent around him right?
Your talking total diffrent situations.(I shouldn't have to explain why and I*'m not going to) Everyone that watched Jet games know they had no consistant pass rush. First is anyone going to challenge this position. IF Qb that had all day to throw the football and eventually after a long time holding the football, they finally got to him.(nobody in there right mind going to say that means that team has a good passrush. DE S ellis led the Jets in sacks, that should never happen in 3-4 defense as OLbs are the one that pressure the Qb. (those guys job is to tie up blockers) Further illustrating Qb usually having all day to throw, got complacent and ellis eventually got to Qb. IF Jet pass rush was as good as there stats say they were(anyone who watched the games know is a lie) they wouldn't have the 29th pass defense. Again we are going to see just how good Bart Scott really is. Was he a product of playing with some best players surrounding him or is he that good. Only time will answer that. How many players that looked good with the Ravens, suddenly look alot diffrent without those other players around them. See Giants and Chargers secondary. Those average secondary look alot better because of the consistant pass rush their defensiveline puts on the QB(less time they have to stay with reciever) Let see bart Scott when he ask to cover longer because jet pressure on QB is very inconsistant. Alston has shown throughtout this offseason his ability in coverage. IF he can stay with Mcfadden (who a bigger faster Charlie Garner as a reciever) in man coverage and make alot of plays on football. He can pretty much cover anyone. Again the only question Alston has to answer is how he will do holding up against the run. Still even if he dosen't start he will play alot. When you have two LBS (thomas Howard and Jon Alston that can match up with a Rb or a TE in man coverage. You can do so much more. Big reason why I would look for Keller and Leon Washington to be non factors in the passing game against the Raiders. Easily both are taking out by way faster players , with some serious coverage skills. Raiders aren't a cover two defense. They are a man to man defense(Cb's will play Wr man to man) The SS or SSLB will pick up the TE man to man and Wlb Thomas Howard will take the RB man to man. Again look at Seattle used their Lbs and that is the blueprint what raiders lbs will do. Trevor, Toledo Do you see Jon Alston pairing up with you and Howard as the starting linebackers after the weight he put on this offseason? Or is it still Ricky Brown's job? Kirk Morrison Right now, it looks like so far, Jon Alston has the upper hand a little bit. He's ahtletic and fast and can help us out a lot. He gained a little bit of weight, but he's carrying it well. He looks fantastic out there, and I'm excited for him to get that opportunity and to see what he can do. What he's been doing in the offseason is gearing everybody up to get ready to go. I think getting him in there will give him a chance to see what he can do. No matter who it is, we know we'll have someone capable of doing the job there. Lets see how the Raiders plan on stopping the run. JMO you could even see a 5- 2- 4 defense occassionally- just my own speculation) Two Pass rushing DEs Say Greg ellis and trevor scott on the outside . Three massive DTs inside( T sands , Gerard warren and tom Kelly) Two very very very fast Lbs(howard and Alston) free to run the football and two guys that can play man coverage.
And you really don't think Rex Ryan is going to install that kind of defensive scheme with the personnel we have here? C'mon Jeaux, I thought you knew better than that.
Why do you guys continue to give this guy the attention he's seeking? He's a troll, nothing more. And a lousy one at that.
Look you can plan on installing any scheme you want, but it still comes down to talent. See marvin Lewis. B thomas and calvin pace are your starting Olb and that is not very impressive. Lets see if Rex ryan has to change his defense somewhat if Jets can't hold up in coverage. Maybe there was a reason mangini call off the Blitzes.
Okay just like last year when I told you Jets would have trouble with their Lbs matching up in coverage.(you didn't believe it than) Again you brought exactly what to this football coversation. Nothing. Stay in the Jet section with your fantasy good feeling. Btw- This thread is Raiders cut sixth rounder.(in NFL forum) What did you expect when you opened this thread. <shaking my head in disbelief>
Look, you can say Calvin Pace isn't a great or just a cover LB, fine. Rex Ryan defenses don't blitz anymore than 4 people aside from an occasional jail break/all out blitz. The point in his scheme is to disguise where the blitz is coming from; not throw the kitchen sink at the QB everytime. Kris Jenkins can draw double teams from the OL, Shaun Ellis was probably one of the best 3-4 DE with the amount of sacks he earned last year. Douglas is questionable, but he can't possibly be worst than 'just another body on the DL' Coleman. We all know Pace, Harris and Scott can rush the QB, as well as Thomas when he feels like playing, and Gholston is yet to arrive. Seriously Jeaux, you're more worried about this Jets pass-rush than we all are. In the last 5 games of the season we recorded 6 sacks. It was pathetic, and we STILL had more total sacks than the Raiders did. You should worry more about going 5-11 to 6-10. So thanks for the Raiders ex-6th round offer, but no thanks.
Again if you HONESTLY look at the situation. There is no way you can be happy with the pass rush you got from your team last year. There was far too many times last year that there was no pressuring being applied to the Qb. Again you don't rank 29th against the pass, if your pass rush was as effective as you claim. Counting on Rex Ryan scheme to fix that with his scheme, and having two slightly below Olb still starting.(only hope if Gholston emerges and becomes the player Jet envison when they took him with sixth pick) Your entitled to believe that and time might prove you were correct. JMO I wouldn't hold my breath. Didn't you learn anything from the exotic blitz packages mangini used so effective his first year. They worked very well early and once teams figure out what they were doing. They exposed your secondary big time. When you have to rely on tricks to generate a pass rush, and not talent, you really don't have a passrush. You can be under the false impression that your pass rush is just fine. Believe your sack numbers are saying you have this great defense. Just be prepared to have one of the worse pass defense in the league again. (exposing that little lie you keep telling yourself) S eLLIS SACK NUMBERS ARE SCREAMING HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM. A De should never lead a 3-4 defense in sacks. That my friend is an indictment agaist your Olbs. BTW Last point Rewatch last years games. The tape dosen't lie.
