"Usually at this time of the year, every fifth, from 75, 80," Davis said, "I've held a nice party in Las Vegas but I felt this year, predicated on the economy, that we would just whittle it down to a few friends for dinner, and hold off because we didn't want to flaunt when everyone else is having trouble financially and I thought it was best to do it that way." I still think he's senile and doesn't know how to run a football team, but I thought this was a classy move.
Raiders still suck....jk. Pretty good gesture on Al Davis' part, esp. in a time when you don't see a lot of good gestures from owners
Here's another. As crazy and dumb as he is he still has a SB appearance for his team this decade while I have been following the Jets since 1981 and have yet to see a SB appearance.
Am I the only one that is looking at this scenario with a different perspective? Sure, it's not cool to "flaunt" when everyone else is having trouble financially. But I'm sure the hotels, catering service, event hall, transportation services, etc. would've appreciate it more if they had work and money in their pockets because of the event, rather than just have Al Davis feel sorry for them. If you've got it, spend it old man. Cause you're not going to be able to take it where you're going.
To take it a step further, here's Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune comparing the Raiders' approach to the current economic conditions to the Yorks in San Francisco:
