Jets interested in Willie McGinest? With Calvin Pace(notes) out for the first four games of the season after failing a drug test and the team still uncertain about former No.1 pick Vernon Gholston(notes), the New York Jets may consider adding veteran Willie McGinest(notes), according to the NFL Network. Profootballtalk.com suggest the Jets could add McGinest for the first four games of the season, however, since McGinest is a vested veteran, he'd be entitled to receive his full salary as termination pay, if he's on the opening-day roster and if he's cut after Pace returns. So the cheaper alternative would be to carry a guy who otherwise would have been dumped before the season started, and to drop him behind Vernon Gholston on the depth chart while Pace is gone, according to Profootballtalk.com. Although he would most likely be an immediate upgrade (probably) The likes of Gholston and Thomas have to play , even if its just to see if we are wasting our time with them. http://forums.theganggreen.com/showpost.php?p=1287376&postcount=140
I think it's a great idea considering the circumstances. He could even stick around and be a player-coach. He has the experience.
how much does this guy have left in the tank? I don't remember him being anything close to spectacular in Cleveland.
i would rather give the playing time to gholston....if he is going to be a bust..id rather him be one on the field then on the bench... we have to know what hes about and this is a great time for him
he's 37. if he wants to come in and teach during TC, let him, but cut him before the season starts. But being 37 will limit his effectiveness on the football field.
No..no..no. He is a fully vested veteran which means he can't get cut after Pace comes back. You would have to pay his full year's salary if he is one the roster for game 1.
If the cap room is there, and the money isn't coming out of your pocket then I don't see the problem. It's not as if he'd sign anything more than a 1 year deal with incentives, there would be no long term financial ramifications. Since when did we as fans start giving a shit about the owners pockets? I'd think the mass wouldn't be interested I thought he was pretty crappy in Cleaveland last season.
The Jets interest in Willie McGinest tells a lot about how they feel about Vernon Gholston. He just might be a bust and the Jets probably know it.
Please kill me if the Jets pick up McGinest...he should be coaching with Cox!! CMON!!! This is a horrendous choice, and I hope this is a joke!!! Let's not panic just yet!!
I disagree!! I think the Jets should sign him bcuz Vernon Gholston sucks!! CMON!!! This is not a joke!!
If the Jets already know he is a bust, he would have been cut long time ago. No point in paying him all that money. Most of it is guaranteed, but theres a big chunk of base salary that he gets paid which is going to waste if he was a bust. Im sure he must have shown some signs that he can play and start on this team.
But pls, we do not need an old washed up, probably useless veteran for 4 games with a yr worth of salary. Im not paying for him, but it just pushes Gholstons progress further down. We need Gholston now, not after his contract finishes. Let him play and if he can't, do the judgement on him next yr. or something.
agreed wouldnt it cost us like 18 million against the cap this year alone to cut Gholston? as opposed to his like 3-5 million just to keep him? Yeah it sucks but drafting a bust in the top 5-10 will require you to keep him on your roster for the life of his original contract.
HE WOULD GIVE US A VETERAN LEADERSHIP ON DEFENSE and he would add depth to a much needed position. If the Jets are truely interested in him, it speaks volumes as to what they actually think of Gholston ,,,,as to what we keep reading. Time will tell
Don't Sign Him!!! The last thing we need is a washed up, old, highly paid veteran on our roster for only one season. Lets see how the young kids perform over these first four games. It's not like we a going to the Superbowl this season. We are in year one of a new regime. It will take a few years (2 or 3) for everything to jell. Lets, for ONCE, find out what we have on the bench before we take fliers on washed up old players whose best years are behind them. Who knows, maybe we have a legit starter (or a highly skilled situational player) on our bench who only needs some real playing time to develop. Now if we were to sign somebody to fill in for Pace, could we at least find a younger player who will be with the team (as depth) for the next few years?
