I actually just read some statistics a couple months ago...the most common breed reported for biting in the US is a Golden Retriever. Having owned one and been around many goldens, this is obviously due to bad dog owners. Bad dog owners are not exclusive to "pit bulls". Pits just happen to be a lvl 2 or lvl 3 dog (lvl 1 = 3-4 year old mellow mutt). They are not a dog for first time or lazy dog owners. I've owned/own a golden retriever, a lab, 2 mutts, a beagle, a basset hound and an english staffordshire bull terrier. They all have different requirements and were all great dogs.
Their rep (PB) is probably a bit overstated kind of like a Great White Shark. Any aggressive dog is usually the product of bad breeding, poor training, and a person who really should not own a pet, especially a dog. However the PB is gifted with some seriously powerful jaws and some seriously long, sharp, teeth. Most breeds are typically bred to specialize in a purpose dating back several hundred (or more) years in some cases. While I am not saying a PB is a bad dog, their specialization is clear. I must admit that when my youngest son was 2, I was out in my driveway one morning (I live in the country); and, the person across the street had a PB, who was loose that morning (this was the only time this ever happened). The dog began slowly strolling up my driveway that morning. I was scared; my son was strapped into his stroller and it all happend so fast that there was no time to do anything. I decided the best thing to do was nothing. The dog did not approach me and went directly to my son; I was 5 or 6 feet away. I could see the dog's nub tail wagging a bit and was hoping everything was going to be OK. Meanwhile I see the owner of the dog starting to cassually make her way up my drive. The dog started to lick my son's face. My heart was in my throat and I could hardly breathe; I just kept saying to myself; "Please, if there is a God, please don't let the ugly visions in my mind happen!!!!!! Please watch over my son!" She came up and put the dog back on the leash and everything was fine. I thought about exchanging my thoughts with her, but decided not to because she was a psycho. I just said "Good morning" and gingerly, but deliberately, started wheeling my son to the back yard. She also was not a good neighbor and fortunately, she is no longer there. At any rate, to this day, I still think about that day and the fact that in milliseconds my whole son's future could have been changed for ever over something incredibly stupid and random. Thankfully nothing happened.
Anyone want to make a bid for that dog and then make him chase Gholston in TC? I'm sure that will get him motivated...
ive had a pit, a pit mix, and various other mutts. you have to be a good owner, and i grew up having a pit as a kid. so people can take that argument and lodge it in there ass. i wont elaborate on the whole pitbull thing but simply put, its just like raising a dumb child, if you dont do it right, or keep your eye on them. shit happens. how that should be the dogs fault is beyond me. i hear the generalizations all the time but just like with anything else i believe in, i could give a fuck less what the status quo has to say. either way I have an American Bulldog now and theyre my favorite breed to date.
Pitbulls unfortunately are often owned (in the UK at least) by people trying to put across a "hard man" image - which means the dogs are owned by idiots that mistreat them and encourage them to be vicious - when you see these reports in the papers about someone being attacked its nearly always some total chav that owned the dog.
That's the truth. I don't hate pit bulls, but they are bred killers. My fiance's father has 4 pit bulls at his house out in the country. They are all like big pussycats, but they play the dominance game more than other breeds do, to the point where one will fuck another male in the ass to display dominance. A month ago her father had 5 pit bulls, but one of the adults named Max started rough-housing with a one-year old named Harley and in 20 seconds there was blood everywhere and Max was laying there with his eyes rolled back in his head, twitching. These were the two most well-behaved Pit Bulls I've ever seen, but they are still Pit Bulls. I've never heard of a golden retriever spontaneously tearing the throat out of another golden retriever.
This is probably because that is a far more common breed, if you looked at the % of retrievers biting and the % of pit-bulls I would guess that the figures would be very different (but then thats statistics for you)
A good friend of mine ones one, and she?s the nicest dog ever. I guess it?s more that people who hate everything and everybody just like to get pitbulls and screw them up.
I still contend that its the owner not the dog. These poor animals are as much a product of the owner as they are of the breed. The breed is more aggressive due to their purpose which is as a sport / hunting breed (the terrier that is which the top of the pit bull family). Pitbulls aren't the issue it is a combo of the breeders and the owners who put them in the wrong environment
you misunderstand... or, perhaps i wasn't explaining properly. either way i wasn't trying to generalize akitas as bad. its they have more of a tendancy of dog aggression and therefore more likely to be involved in an attack. as for where i gleaned my tidbit of knowledge from.... in eastern europe/ex soviet bloc nations, dog fighting is still legal. the past champions all have akita in there blood due to the natural dog agression. my point was trying to be its the owner not hte dog. apologies if that wasn't clear enough. additinoally akitas are japanese.. they're not sled dogs in the least. from wikipedia: either way. it seems we're arguing the same point here. edit: my mention of akitas was basically that there are other breeds that will attack and are just as "bad" as pits... but you never hear about them. bc they aren't pits and pits have this mystique about them... again. its the owner/handler not hte breed. i was merely trying to make some a counter point to the hatred of pits. fair enough it sounded as if i was against akitas. having lived with one for some time i can surely tell you that was not my intention.
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/akita.htm Not sled dogs in the least huh? Akitas, malamutes, and huskies are the most common sled dogs. They are used on sled teams in Asia, Alaska, etc. regularly. Their natural pulling tendency, pack mentality, intelligence, large paws for better grip and swimming, and large muscular bodies make them perfect sled dogs. And yes there is snow in Japan. Like I said alot like a German Shepard. There are many breeds that have this natural pack mentality and have more agresssive behavior. So I agree with your point in general. But a number of your facts were not correct, or at least not complete, about akitas. By the way the Japanese Akita and American Akita are considered by many to be two separate breeds.
Its the owner not the dog. Morons that want a dog to make them look tough, don't treat it well and then this kinda sh1t happens and then everyone hates the dog even though its not his fault.
+1 We have a Ridgeback, which is 1/2 Pit. She is a sweetheart, but very protective. It's all how they are raised.
...and then you'd probably have to change your screen name to RedShoeWillie. OneFootWillie or, in an even worse case scenario, NoWillieWillie. hmy:
I have no clue if it would work, but my thinking is that the dog would drop like a rock if I punted it in the throat. After it dropped I'd kill it. I never said it was smart, it's probably dumb. And don't get me wrong, I love dogs, I just have no problem killing one if it's about to attack me or if it attacks someone else. human life >>> dog life I was taught when I was young that the worst thing you can do with a dog is to show any type of fear. That always stuck with me for some reason.
My little toe was bit off by a black lab. I have had pits and rotties and now have a boxer. I can tell you all my dogs have never attacked anyone all they do is lick. I have a 9 year old son and an 18 month son. My 9 year old grew up with my rottie and were best friends before storm passed away. as far as my toe it was put back on and works fine today just looks a little funky. What im trying to say you cant blame anything on the breed blame the people that over breed the dogs and people that buy them from back yard breeders.
In theory its a good idea I suppose but in reality it could be about as difficult as pulling a 90 MPH fastball on the outer half of the plate. If you're good, you may connect 30% of the time except with a vicious, trained pit bull, you aren't likely to get a second PAT attempt as far as you're proposed kick to the throat maneuver is concerned. A pit bull's bite can generate in excess of 2500 lbs per square inch and once they've latched on to something, all the kicking and punching you have in you may not do anything to induce them to let go. In fact, it is not uncommon to have to pry-open the jaws of a PB even after you have shot him dead. They can be the sweetest of animals but even some of the sweet ones can be dangerous as hell under certain circumstances.
i had an american staffordshire terrier(which is related to the pitbull terrier but gets lumped in with them) for 12 years and she was one of the friendliest and inadvertently the smartest dogs ive ever seen. she ran around like a pup even though she was full grown when people would play with her, but if a small child was around, she acted completely different. she was incredibly calm and tip toed around the child and even kept an eye out on the kid. This dog exercised discretion. now im pretty sure some jackass is gonna say she was probably stalking her prey and we got to the kid in time. i have never come across a bad pitbull with a good owner. its literally how the owner raises them. unfortunately you can get a pitbull for cheap in the hood and corny ass thugs are the ones raising them. they dont have them because they love dogs, they have them as weapons. any dog can be bred to be a bad ass if you treat it like shit. Treat anything like shit and see how they turn out. and on a side little stupid toy dogs are some of the most aggresive little shits you'll ever come across. Ive never seen a friendly chihuahua. they all snap and bite, but i guess those kinds stats dont get recorded. only pits
