If it was two years ago sure, but he's almost 30 now I think (29 I believe). And besides, because of our uncertain QB play there's no telling where we'll finish this year. We could be picking in the twenties or much earlier.
Burress is the guy that made that pitiful QB named Eli look like a star. You would have to be crazy not to take him.
the fact that the jets contacted his agent prior to the draft indicates a deal is closer to happening how?
I don't think Burress is a top 3 WR but I'm having a hard time finding 10 better Wrs in the game right now. I'd like to have him if as long as he doesn't get suspended and he is signed by training camp.
Burress is actually 31. I don't think age is a factor for him as much as it is for other WR. He's not a guy like Marvin Harrison (that relies on quickness) or like Randy Moss (relying on speed). Burress' game relies heavily upon his size. It's not like he's going to shrink when he hits 34. He probably has a solid 4 years left in him.
Burress, in my opinion as someone who has seen him play a lot, is a frustrating talent to evaluate because he can be a top 3 WR when he feels like it. He does take plays off and is a bit of a headcase, but he's a VERY talented player.
I say yes get Burress. His lawyer says there wont be a trial until 2010, we get 8 games out of him I'd be happy. I bet we can get him very cheap too. He says he wants to come to NY to "stick it to the Giants"
Great post, tool. Clearly it was Burress 2 catches in the Super Bowl that made Eli look good. Eli's not amazing, but to say he's "pitiful" shows you know nothing of football or have an axe to grind. There is, I suppose, a third possibility as well, you might not be that bright. Yeah, I think I'll go with that one.
I'd love to add Burress. I think it'd be a low-risk high-reward scenario. We are so thin at WR, and I'm not comfortable having Stuckey as a #2 at this point in his career. We need a big play/deep threat, and Burress is that guy.
I know we can fit him under the cap, it would be a one year incentive laden contract with an option in March. And he would be so pumped to shove up the Giants ass in the same town in would be pure genius. Rank him where you want, he's incredible in the red zone, no one better. This could make us a real contender.
Yeah, the point I was making was that Boldin isn't worth more than a second because of his age. The only compensation that getting Burress requires is his contract, which will def. be smaller than the package Boldin would be looking for
Honestly, I would not be against giving him a 2-3 year deal with an easy out for us in case he fucks up again and drafting a WR early next year and let him learn under Cotchery and Burress. Like FGF pointed out, he still has some good years left in him cus his game is predicated on his size more than anything else.
Because Boldin's skill sets mimics Cotchery (or vice versa) Burress complements Cotchery,(or vice versa)
I've made my thoughts on the "stick it to the Giants" factor clear elsewhere. The short of it is I doubt the Giants care if he plays for the Jets at all, better them than an NFC East rival. The real issue I have is with your last sentence. I don't think the Jets are contenders right now and I don't see one WR making the difference. Rookie QB & coach, new defensive system, and Brady returning to NE make that highly unlikely. He could help ease Sanchez into the league, but I am more in favor of finding a young and talented WR (via the draft) and letting him and Sanchez grow together (ala Manning & Harrison).
None of us know that , if we're honest. What we will bring to the AFC east next season is unease amongst our competitors. New coaches, players and re-energised O and D make us unpredictable , we may be aweful next season , but I don't think so.
