I figured this would be good for some comments.

    Belichick Takes The High Road
Posted by Aaron Wilson on June 10, 2009, 4:09 p.m. EDT
Unlike the verbal free-for-all that?s escalating between New York Jets coach Rex Ryan and Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has no plans to enter the fray.

Despite Ryan?s oft-quoted remark that he ?never came here to kiss Bill Belichick?s rings,? Belichick declined to take the bait and didn?t respond in kind during an interview today, according to Bob Glauber of Newsday.

?It doesn?t matter,? Belichick said of Ryan?s brash comments. ?I?m just trying to get ready for tomorrow?s practice and that?s it.?

Belichick was complimentary of Ryan?s work as well as the Jets in general, maintaining his composure instead of making this into a bigger offseason story.

?I have a lot of respect for Rex and what he did in Baltimore, the defense his teams played,? Belichick said. ?We?ve always had great battles with the Jets, so I?m sure that will continue. It?s a good rivalry. They beat us up here last year. They kind of got the last punch in on that one.?

Continuing the trash-talking theme of the day in the AFC East, Ryan got in a fresh shot at Crowder after today?s minicamp practice, according to Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News.

?Let?s see if he can top this one,? Ryan said. ?I?ve walked over tougher guys going to a fight. . . . He can send himself and his father after me.?

If it?s this feisty in June, imagine what the verbal assaults are going to be like during the regular season.

Just a hunch, but Tony Sparano and Bill Parcells might eventually advise Crowder to knock it off at some point. As for Ryan, he?s unlikely to call off the dogs.

I agree, not sure why the dude was pissed off by what Ryan said, he was laughing. I guess he must have heard it secondhand. If he saw the interview, I can't imagine he wouldn't have taken it seriously.

Good god, what kind of retard would look at those press conferences and think of them as a 'Game'. Rex is joking around, a moron like Crowder will react like it's some sort of slight.

Its gonna be fun though, Brady is back, Owens in Buff and the Dolphins defending the AFC east and the stupid media will take these pressers and play them every time we play these guys. Fun, ummm, that's the point, its going to be fun again and with Mangini he would not let his game face down after a great win, just another win, come back Monday, look at the tape, work the same way, win or lose. F that baby, kick some ass and say so, look happy, say it, enjoy it like a fan for a few. That's what I want from my leader, let your hair down after a long week and a good win. We know by Wed. you gotta move on

I like that idea, but he has to produce results. I had a lot of fun with Favre at QB up until mid-season when his arm fell off. Fun and losing aren't that fun. I like Rex, but I'm hoping he's going to save most of him laughs for the Win column.

It is fun to hear Rex flap his tyrannosaurus sized jaws but he is undoubtedly putting a big bulls eye on his back that he had better be ready to defend. Otherwise, his is going to look like a major tool. Jawing internally is one thing but I don't see the competitive benefit to giving rivals more emotional ammunition to want to beat you. As much as I hate Belicheck, he is showing wisdom in taking the high road and showing respect.

I'm a bit surprised Parcells or Sporano haven't told Crowder tho chill out.

Maybe Ryan is pulling a Parcells type thing. He knows the media is eating this stuff up, and if they're focused on this shit, maybe it takes a little focus off his young Qb's.... for awhile.

Of course it's joking around! But it's obviously a bit of a game for Ryan, because he clearly thinks up stuff to say about it every day.

actually they have. it is in the crowder thread. it might be hard to find because of the pennington ball licking being done by feelthepain, but someone did post an article saying that ireland "was dealing with it myself" so i don't think we will hear any more out of crowder.

I'm hoping that's the idea. Either way, the only thing that matters is the W column. I would hate to think we just re-hired Herm Edwards.

There's no way Byz. Herm doesn't have enough coaching skills to hold Ryan's jock strap.

ryan knows how to operate one side of the football, unlike Herm. Herm never ran an defense, and probably never could or will. He's all cheer and no X's and O's.

At least Ryan is both. And his cheering isn't any "mind over matter" bullshit. Its beat your mind in with my fist and spray your brain matter all over the field.

Haha exactly my point. Herm was nothing more than Jackie Chiles.

We have stop worrying about give Belichick ammunition. Beli's a master motivator and he wants to beat every team just as badly anyway.

Ryan seems to know that one of this team's problems has been walking on eggshells.

The first step in beating somebody is saying that's the goal.

I saw a great illustration of this concept in the outdoor survival movie, "The Edge."
Anthony Hopkins and Alex Baldwin are stranded in Grizzly Country with a man-eating bear on their trail. Baldwin's character keeps wanting to give up, and Hopkin's character tries to get him to man-up. He shows him a matchbox cover depicting a man killing a grizzly with a long spear.

"What one man can do another can do. Say it, Bob!" "What one man can do, another can do--say it again." Hopkins keeps pumping Baldwin up until he starts saying it with conviction.

"Today's the day," Hopkins finishes, "I'm going kill the motherfucker." And he does.

That's what Ryan is saying. Today is the day, now is the time for the Jets to rise up and kill the fucking Patriots.

Right now everybody loves Rex but I think he's just an improved version of Buddy. Just like Buddy he knows coaching backwards and forwards and the players love him. Just like Buddy he will periodically do classless and stupid things and there is nothing anyone can do to change it. With the Ryans you have to put up with the stupid they way you had to put up with the INTs with Favre. Right now its all fun but before the season is over every Jet fan will have shouted "why did he do that!" at the tv at least once.
