Hughes has been very impressive. FYI, this ballpark is third in park factor runs this season, behind only Coors Field and Chase Field.
I wonder if we will see Hughes try and go the distance. If it were a closer game, I would say yes. Im guessing we have seen the last of Hughes though.
Joba might not start in the playoffs not because he's a bad starter but he would be very very valuable as a 7th inning/setup guy for Mo.
It's too bad imo. A healthy CC/Burnett/Wang/Hughes/Andy and Joba to rescue the pen would really be great
As much as my fantasy team would have liked to see Hughes get the complete game, I can't fault Girardi for yanking Hughes there. I do wonder, though, about why he brought in Aceves. At that point, all you need is the win... bring in Tomko or Veras or whatever. Don't bring in your long man.
Games like today's make me a very, very happy man haha. Hughes was great, I would've loved to see the complete game, but at 101 pitches it's not the worst thing in the world to let him rest. I loved the fire Hughes showed in the dugout when Girardi told him that he was done though, its that competitive spirit/demeanor that is one of the reasons I think Hughes can be so successful in this league. Great win today, lets get another one tomorrow!
See? Aren't you glad you always talked about how he has those 4 plus pitches and was a star in the making? -------- Unfortunately, I missed the game. Honestly, how did his stuff look? I think him not shaking Girardi's hand is classic! I'm sorry, I know all about this babying bullshit these days, but some guys still want to give you 9. If they've given you a great 8 (and I would have to guess it was a pretty good performance when not giving up a run) why not allow them to trot out for the ninth under the condition that they're only given a short leash? Oh, and those red hats are atrocious. It's one thing to see them with the unbent brim, 3 sizes too big, tilted sideways, on some douche on the subway, but come on. That just looked stupid. EDIT: I just read an article over at the Yankees site, and Hughes will be getting another start against Cleveland. Wang still in the pen for now. The article also said Hughes was throwing a fastball, curveball, and cutter. How'd that look?
His stuff looked pretty much the same as past outings... he just had command of all his pitches, and threw more cutters and less four-seamers than previous outings. But the command was the biggest part. He was painting corners with his fastball, and getting his curve over for a strike when he needed to. His average velocity was also down a bit, but nothing major. He's been throwing the cutter for a while now... it's a good pitch. Good bite to it... enough that Gameday occasionally classifies it as a slider.
I missed the game. Whenever I miss it Hughes pitches great. Maybe Illhave to sit out all of HUghes' starts
I disagree. The pink bats are okay to me. That's not changing the uniform. I would have been fine with red bats for yesterday's game. I don't care about velocity. I only care about command, and break. Halladay and Burnett discovered the formula. Maybe Burnett taught Hughes? The cutter was his #4 pitch, correct? It was originally fastball, curve, change, cutter, right? Seems like the same for me. It's irritating actually.
