HELP!!!!! I bought a lappy and still have my pc. I bought a wireless router. When I hook the mofo up to the modem then the pc like it says, my pc can't get on line but the router says everything working! I don't wanna hijack my neighbors too much.
Check your password to log into your wireless Network. It has to match what you configured on your router. Check all your settings. In particular, make sure that your settings for Wireless type and security match and that your subnet mask is large enough to provide a ip address to your Laptop. DHCP has to be enabled as well. Let me know if you need more help.. This can get complicated..
Thanks Cman. I've been fooling with this crap all day so I'm off for the night. I have Verizon dsl modem, I bought a linksys broadband router. I think it's my modem that is probably 4 to 5 years old. It hasn't even let me go as far as to setting up a password for wireless. Should I call Verizon? The bastards were just here yesterday replacing lines along our street.
Absolutely give them a call. They should dispatch a tech out to get you up and running. Make sure they give you a dsl filter too or split your line at the junction box so that the DSL has its own dedicated "pair". At the very least, get your DSL modem online. I have the same setup you do as I have a Linksys Router and a Verizon DSL modem. You're gonna probably need a new modem as that's what solved my intermittent issues with connectivity. They'll ship one out for ya. Most of the advice I gave you was for your Linksys. Basically, the new DSL modem will run itself once you install the setup disc and follow the prompts..
One last thing Pam, You will have to configure your Linksys to be in a different network than your DSL Modem or you'll never connect to the internet. This is crucial. Your DSL modem probably will have this IP address: 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 or something close to it. Your Linksys Router will have to have this IP address to work: 192.168.2.1. Your configuration should look similar to this: DSL Modem: IP address_192.168.1.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.252 DHCP enabled Linksys Router: Depending if you have a "N" or "G": Match with your wireless adapter in your laptop IP address: 192.168.2.1 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.248 which will give you room for 6 other items on your network DHCP enabled Wireless Security: WPA-2 or WEP if you Laptop supports it. Network ID: Whatever you want Wireless Password: Instead of a password, use a passphrase. Anything 8-characters or longer is harder to crack. Broadcast Network ID: I don't but you can if you want. I'm just a bit paranoid about that sort of thing. Too many blackhats out there.. lastly, write down your important information regarding your setup on the Linksys. You can also save your config as well. Let me know how this turns out. BTW, did you ever get your NuWave oven?

CMan50, if you can solve this problem, you will be admired by me. I have Cable modem (comcast high speed). I installed a D-Link N wireless router. Put in the WEP, etc. I love it. It is the only wireless I have ever been able to get working in my house. All the laptops in my house (3) were so easy to link to the wireless router that my 12-year old son could (fuk, sorry, terrets) do it and did. My oldest son has a PC in his bedroom which is approximately 35 to 40 feet away on the same floor as the router. I bought a PCI card from the same manufacturer as my router just so I wouldn't be taking chances. When I establish the link between the router and his computer I get 4 bars and communication is recognized, yet, when we go to use the i-net browser on his PC we get the message that a cable must be unplugged or connection is not establlished. We have the settings set to automatically detect DSN, too. This one has been a puzzler for me. I am pretty saavy with darn near to everything. This one has shorted a few cells in my brain, though. Anything come to mind?
Check your Subnet mask settings on your Router as you might not have a big enough subnet mask to provide one more IP address to your Desktop. You said you had 3 pc's already on the router. Counting the router, that makes 4 IP addresses. If you have a wireless printer involved as well, baby makes 5 used IP addresses. Log into the router. Should be page-one for Subnet mask settings... I would go with a larger mask. Say, 255.255.255.248. That gives you 6 IP addresses. You can go even larger if you want. 255.255.255.240. That should be plenty as it would give you a possible 14 IP addresses to use. Make sure DHCP is enabled on your box as well. I imagine you're using NAT so your Router is acting as a DHCP server/Network Address Translator. That's how you get assigned your individual "private" IP addresses. As a check, on the last box, go into command mode and see if you can "ping" the cable modem or say, www.cnn.com or some other well known website. You should be good to go. Oh yeah, if you can't ping 127.0.0.1, you have an internal problem in the box. ReCheck your wireless logon setting on the last box as well just as a CYA. let me know how it turns out GH.

Update Cman. We had the Verizon FiOS installed on Saturday. Took the guy 5 hours but he did everything. Config both the PC and the lappy. Everything is running smoothly. Got a good deal on the bundle too. Unlimited phone and the internet. I had to agree with a 2 year deal but that was no biggie, I've been with them for years anyway.
