What would be so disastrous about Leon killing us for years as a Patriot?

It's only a dissaster if we can't sign him for something reasonably less than it will cost us to sign him after his rookie contract is over. Money today is worth more than money tomorrow especially for athletes who may get hurt.

I'm not sure we could even let him hit the market, but if they value him enough they would probably use the franchise tag until they reached a deal.

Exactly. Can you imagine Moss, Welker and Leon on the field? That's insane speed to have at your disposal.

That's the name of the game, making a quick money grab and waiting until it's not totally ridiculous to try to make another one. So far, Leon has been a very explosive very effective and equally cheap player for us. I think he deserves some retro pay.

This is embarassing, why aren't they giving Leon a good contract? We need all the help we can get at runningback and the Jets snub this guy.

...AND WHY THE HELL ARE WE INTERESTED IN PURSUING PACMAN JONES? It seems like the FO is more interested in letting a criminal play 3rd CB than resigning a stud like Leon. Have the Jets become retarded all of a sudden?

    Jets have 2 disgruntled RB's

Two of the New York Jets' top running backs -- Leon Washington and Thomas Jones -- are reportedly unhappy with their contracts and are skipping offseason workouts.

That's bad news for Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, the team's top draft pick who will need a strong running game if he starts from day one.

Washington, the Jets' dynamic running back/kick returner, skipped the first day of the Jets' organized team activities Monday amid reports he's unhappy with his current contract, which has a base salary of $535,000.

Jones, 30, the team's No. 1 running back, has been a no-show for all of the team's workouts this offseason. Jones is scheduled to make $900,000 in 2009, the third season of a four-year, $20 million contract he agreed to when he was acquired from the Bears in 2007. He made $13.1 million in the first two seasons of his contract.

Jets RB Leon Washington scampers away from Bills defenders on his way to 47-yd TD run.
Washington, 26, is entering the final season of his initial rookie contract. He reportedly is seeking a new contract that averages $6 million per season. The Jets have been negotiating a new contract with Washington this offseason, but according to The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., those talks hit a snag. A source told the newspaper that the team's initial offer to Washington was "insulting."

Washington led the NFL with 2,337 all-purpose yards in 2008 and scored nine touchdowns. Jones also enjoyed a standout 2008 season, rushing for 1,312 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Jets also drafted another running back, Shonn Greene, with the first pick of the third round -- trading three draft picks to move up 11 spots to select him.

All of the Jets' workouts so far have been voluntary. Their first mandatory minicamp is scheduled for June 9-11.

The Pacman rumor was destroyed by the Jets PR themselves.

If the Jets can't lock Leon up to a nice deal and let him get away I am gonna be one very upset Jets fan. How can we not give him an extension.

absolutely - Leon has to be retained. They should give him a 4 year extension. That way when he is 30, he is a FA.

Couldn't agree more. The FO better get this done ASAP. He is one of the top all purpose backs in the game and entering his prime now will only get better.

Heh. So not happening right now. Maybe at the end of the season. :)

Honestly Leon Washington is a good player for you guys. He always racks up good yards against my Dolphins. You guys don't get this resolved you can kiss your season goodbye before it started.

That's fine by me. It'd turn the division into a two race and my guys can concentrate on mussing up Tom Brady's hair.

It's not a choice between doing nothing and giving Leon everything. He's a very good player, but not worth top dollar, imo.

Yes, they have to improve his current contract. I hope they can do that without overpaying him.

Snake Oilman takes shot at New York media

    By Dan Leberfeld

    Posted May 12, 2009

Agent Drew Rosenhaus, who represents holdout Jets runner Thomas Jones, took a shot at the New York media.

“The media has made a big deal about Thomas Jones missing voluntary workouts,” Rosenhaus says. “Let’s see if they take the same approach with Leon Washington.”

Here is the difference Drew - Jones collected $13 million over the first two years of his deal with the Jets. Washington is playing for the league minimum and has never had a big payday.

Reportedly Washington skipped Monday's OTA practice. Washington told JC recently

    *******************************************************

I think Drew is in for a surprise, it seems like we are all very supportive of, Washington. He kinda deserves it, I don't see the majority bashing his view on the situation.

    Stupid, Rosenhaus.

hmmm so we have a top 10 pick on the sideline we have another about to get a huge contract even though he has done nothing... and we cant or dont want to pay a guy who everyone here says is the explosiveness on the team.

interesting. oh but our every down back is unhappy too.... hmmm

i really hope the jets start treating their guys a little bit better than they have the last few years or things are going to get ugly around here.

Who have they treated poorly? Kendall was nothing special, only reason to give him the extra million was cause our backups were horrendous.

    C. Baker was nothing special either.. he had good hands for a TE but the guy never got open.
