So Thomas Jones went skipping off into the sunset while I wasn't looking? "I see" said the blind man to the deaf man who picked up a hammer and saw.

Look. It's clear where this is going.

Once all the other deals are signed and the cap is in order, most of Jones bonus next year will be converted to salary and his cap number will be even and low over the next two years.

    Code:
Thomas Jones was traded to the New York Jets on March 6, 2007.
The Jets gave Jones a 4 year 20 million dollar contract which included 12 million
     in guarantees.
Jones’ signing bonus was 6 million dollars and he was given a
2 million dollar roster bonus in 2007

and is due an estimated 2.1 million dollar bonus in 2008
and 3 million dollar bonus in 2010.
    Jones base salaries are
    $900,000(2007),
    $2,000,000(2008),

    $900,000(2009),

    $2,800,000(2010).
Year Salary Cap Number Dead Money if Cut Cap Savings if Cut
    2007	$4,500,000	$12,000,000 $7,500,000
    2008	$5,600,000	$7,600,000	-$2,000,000
    2009	$2,500,000	$3,000,000	-$500,000
    2010	$7,400,000	$1,500,000	$5,900,000

That makes his cap number this year 5.5, and then 4.4 next year...At the end of the day, we have 9 million cap dollars spread over two years for the AFC's leading rusher...

The contract was clearly structured to protect the NYJets in case Jones did not pan out, but he did.

At his age he is untradeable, but he is still useful, and at that cap number, a bargain.

couple that with the fact that Shonn is 24, If the Jets can sign him to 5 years we'll be set at RB and able to pay Leon without killing the cap, through 2014.

The Broncos situation was somewhat (and remains somewhat) unique in that the reason they have been able to run so well is they have offensive linemen who practice in mile high altitudes and then play half their games there also. The Broncos have done a good job over the years of finding light but strong offensive linemen to take advantage of the lack of appropriate conditioning in their opponents and push them around on the ground. They also use zone-blocking systems to minimize the amount of movement that their linemen have to make on various plays and in pass protection.

I looked at this at one point a couple of years ago and posted the differential between the Broncos on the ground at home and on the road and they had something like a 25-30% increase in ground yardage at home, and also rushed for about that much more than the league average at home. Obviously this has probably changed during the Cutler era since they emphasized the pass much more recently.

You shouldn't expect any other team to be able to plug in runners the way the Broncos do and keep pulling great performances out of the bag while doing it. It's a unique homefield advantage for the Broncos and they certainly have taken that advantage and ran with it.

Based on that salary breakdown Hobbes posted, it's easy to see why he's holding out. He's playing for $900k this year & will likely be cut before he sees next year's $3mil bonus & $2mil salary. He wants an extension to ensure he gets some of next year's money, because nobody will give a 30+ year old RB much next year.

That being said, there's no way I extend him. It's been seen with Curtis Martin & Shaun Alexander. When RBs age, their decline is sudden 7 drastic. Martin led the league in rushing one year & was done the following year.

Am I talking in riddles here? I thought the thread DESERVED to be bumped b/c this is the biggest pressing issue right now! It got bumped - posters gave you some smack for it being dormant, I was sarcastically agreeing with the follow up posters but I agreed with the bump!

Bottom line- w/o Thomas Jones, the Jets are a handicapped team.

This is a ludicrous statement. TJ was dormant two years ago and had a monster season last year. What also happened last year? We upgraded the offensive line ten-fold. Coincidence? I think not.

1000 yard backs are, literally, a dime a dozen in this day and age and it is the single easiest position to "plug and play".

Nonsense. Leon and Shonn are the textbook pair of complement backs.

You don't re-up a disgruntled 31 year old RB who will most certainly be starting his decline in the very near future.

Thank God you will never be an NFL GM.

    Huh???

Leon has yet to carry the full load , and may or may not be able to to. My opinion (if you will let me have one) is that hes not an evry down back and is best when he explodes into plays. Can't do that every down.
Shonn hasn't even taken a f'n hand off in the NFL yet and you want to get shot of someone who dares to ask for some more money???
Get back to Madden and squeezing zits , could you please become the Pats GM.

    I agree with gustoonarmy.

Like I said in the Edwards/Jones trade rumor thread, I think Thomas Jones is a lot more valuable to us than it is to get Edwards. Therefore, I expect him to remain a New York Jet for at least one more season. He can skip all the voluntary workouts all he wants, but once he's required to report, he'll have no choice. Or we'll just begin chipping away at that 900K he's due to make this year in penalties.

It seemed so, but I got you now.

Last night when I logged in I saw Thomas Jones' face on the main page and it annoyed me that he's kvetching. What else is new. Why does it seem that every Jet with a contract issue feels compelled to belly-ache in public? Isn't that what their agents are for? Understood such things have financial ramifications and should be openly reported on, but I can't stand the whining or the histrionics. See how far that gets any of us in the real world, meaning, any occupation other than sports.

It's tiresome. Kendall, Coles, Baker, etc. At least John Riggins seemed to have more cause for complaint to me (speaking of RB's), but I really can't stand the way players carry on. How is that supposed to create good blood in the locker room? Who wants to hear that? Of course they talk amongst themselves, but the spectacle of it irks me.

What irks me more is the people who break these issues and turn them into something they're not. Its not news at all.

    Dormant? AYFKM?!?!??!?!

He got over a thousand yards, behind a line that got Two QB's hurt, and half of which is out of football.

Where did I say that I want Leon to be the feature back?

As I said above, RB is one of, if not THE easiest position for an NCAA player to transition smoothly into and contribute instantly. That's a fact. You are naive if you think that Shonn has a better chance of failing than he does succeding.

Giving a 31 y/o disgruntled RB a beefed up contract extension is foolish, no matter how you slice it. Couple that with the young tandem of Leon and Shonn on the roster, and it's curtains for Jones.

Mark my words: TJ will not be a Jet on opening day.

I thought you have to be over 13 to post here?

Seriously, before you make your next post, I suggest checking your grammar as well as your maturity level.

1 touchdown. Need I say more?

Once again, 1000 yard backs are not difficult to come by. It's no longer a milestone - it's the standard.

No, what your saying is get rid of TJ and go with what we have or pick up another back.
Your letting personal issues get in the way of whats best for the team.
Not only was he the leading AFC rusher , but his team mates also voted him as the Dennis Byrd Award for Most Inspirational Player and team MVP.
He is getting on in years , and should he not produce next season will find it hard to get serious $ for his services , despite him playing at a much younger age. I've not seen anything to suggest that hes slowing down at all.
Where did I say Shonn will fail? What I said was it would be better for Sanchez or whoever else is under centre to have a veteran HB in the backfield.
I didn't see any Iowa games of Shonn and have seen limited footage of him. Most of the so called experts say hes a good back , so I'm going with that at the moment , but I'm also not ready to anoint him as the next Curtis Martin , same goes for all the other Rookies.

    = True

Couldn't care less if I spell every f'n word wrong and my grammar is crap, can you read it and understand it ?? Good , its a football site not an English lesson

During the draft I was hoping the jets did something, anything to get a hold of Shonn Greene and they did and I was happy, only because I had the idea of a three back system. TJ needs to stay, ok I said before he is getting old but I never thought he sucked, now with Leon and Greene the weight of the load is lifted off TJ and we can run a sufficient running game like Baltimore did last season. Like I've read in other articles we now have our own version of earth, wind and fire. We need to keep TJ especially if Greene turns out to suck ass which I hope he doesn’t, but it is always a possibility, The only reason I wanted us to take a RB in the draft the entire time was to have a big power back such as Greene with TJ and Leon. THOMAS JONES NEEDS TO STAY A JET!!!!!! At least for this season, so we can definitely know where we are at in terms of this offense, and I do believe in our receivers but if it goes bad we need every possible piece to this offense to determine exactly what we need in the upcoming seasons. This team is on the fine line to being fucking great!!!!
