Looking at Favres BS over the past few years I think the NFL should institute a rule regarding retirement to protect teams. If a player uses retirement to leave where he is then he should not be allowed to "retire" and if he does there has to be some type of ramification such as Cannot accept any more then league minimum or Must stay retired for the following season Favre is using retirement as a way to move from team to team and its just wrong
There is something to protect the team. It's called not granting the player a release. When Favre changed his mind on retirement last year, he was reinstated to the Packers. We granted him his release, hence why he was free to sign with the Vikings if he chose to. We didn't have to give him that release.
The same people bitching about Favre are the same ones gushing about the FAs we got this off season. Don't you realize that none of them would be here without the 13 million we saved with him leaving?
I don't see anyone in this thread bitching that he left us. I see a guy mistaken about how retirement actually works in the NFL, but that's it. Not sure where this comment fits into the discussion, but thank you.
The problem in this case is Favre had all the leverage. Had he decided to come back with the Jets we wouldn't have had the salary cap room and would've had to cut other players to keep him from signing with another team.
I agree. A rule needs to be put in place or players like Favre will have the option to "retire" so that they can sign with a team of their preference. If this starts to happen more often it could definitely hurt teams that could ordinarily receive trade value for a player.
Actually his second option, have to stay retired for at least one season, is currently in effect in the NHL. With the way the cap works there needs to be some type of rule in place to protect teams from a guy like Favre. I could care less that he is comming back this season though. I'm more then happy with Sanchez and moving forward instead of living in the past this offseason.
Again, retiring does not clear you of your obligation to a team. The NFL does not guarantee reinstatement. Last year, Goodell waited to reinstate Favre until after he and the Packers could work out a plan for his future. The NFL doesn't have to reinstate a player who retires simply to force his way off of a team. Salary cap ramifications are always taken into account first.
It's true. I'm watching NFL Live right now and Jeremy Schaap just reported it. Anything short of "major" surgery and Favre to the Vikings is expected to happen.
Bahahahahaha, this shit is so funny. I hope Favre does come back, honestly. Of course they won't stop talking about him until something big happens, but it would be funny watching the circus around Packers versus Vikings and all of Favre's fanboys try to justify rooting for a Viking.
