Wow, this had me absolutely cracking up. Nice work jonny! -------------- As for Hughes, his location was atrocious. Home plate umpiring is always poor after a rain delay, and last night was no exception (in either direction) but that wasn't Hughes' problem. Last night he just threw poorly. Shit happens. I don't expect a no-hitter every time he gets on the mound. As for Posada, just wonderful. Seems Girardi is at least thinking about having to go with another option at catcher. Posada is definitely not playing tonight according to Girardi.
http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/players/playerpage/7987 Posada going on 15-day DL: Yankees catcher Jorge Posada will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, according to WFAN radio station in New York. Posada left Monday's game against Boston after hurting his right hamstring. He underwent an MRI and was diagnosed with a strained hamstring. (Updated 05/05/2009). Injury Report Hamstring - Out until at least late May (Updated - 5/5/09) ====== No word on Youkilis.
That's what happens when most of your key guys are in their mid to late 30's. If Cashman stopped signing guys to 4-5-6-7-8-9 year deals then the Yankees could actually get rid of players on the downside of the careers.
as annoying as you are, there is some credibility to that statement. We went into this season with a 38 year old catcher, an old broken down asshole in left, a short stop who couldnt reach first base if had a jai alai cesta and a Japanese DH who m ay very well be 40 for all we know.
Yup... youth helps on the injury front. In this case, though, there's no need to exaggerate. Posada was signed to a three year deal, with the idea being that he could move to DH, if need be. Matsui's knee surgeries took DHing this year off the table for Posada, but Matsui's and Damon's contracts are up after this season. Jeter's and Po's are up after next year. I'm really curious to see what happens to Jeter. I didn't (and still don't) mind the Matsui and Damon contracts (both 4-year deals). I would have passed on the Posada one, but then again, there really weren't any better options out there. And even Jeter's contract isn't looking so bad, considering what he's done for the life of it.
Jeter's contract wasnt bad at all. But we need to find a position that he can play. SS aint it anymore. Posada's contract on teh other hand is loooking disasterous. Do we have any catching projects that we can overrate?
Jeter has been worth it. Damon too. As much as I've talked about Damon, his injuries always come as a result of him playing too hard. Posada came up lame going from one base to another. Damon goes on the DL after crashing into walls. I'll give Damon a pass. Matsui is a tough call. He can still hit. He's hit the vast majority of time he's been in the lineup since he's been here. The problem is, as soon as he broke his wrist he became the Yankees' Glass Pennington. Posada really pisses me off though. We brought him back again, even being as old as he is, and he's spent significant time on the DL ever since. Dave is sort of right. The problem isn't necessarily that the Yankees give out too many long-term contracts (though we'll see how the ARod, Sabathia, Burnett, Teixeira contracts play out now) the problem has been we renew contracts on players who are already "over the hill." Now I'll take it on the chin that I wanted, and cheered for, giving Posada and Mo new contracts, but so far, they're not working out. EDIT: I really shouldn't include Mo in that, yet. His injury, so far at least, has been relegated to offseason time, so I can't hold that against him. Unfortunately, our best catching prospect is Cervelli, and he's in double-A. Here's to another long season.
Cervelli is no where near out best catching prospect, he's just the closest to the majors. Jesus Montero: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/...sus Montero&pos=C&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=524968 Austin Romine: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/...stin Romine&pos=C&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=519222
I don't think Jeter was worth the money either. It was a better contract than most of the long term deals given out, but that's not saying much. If he has to play SS, it hurts the team defensively. His offensive production and leadership offsets it, but not to the degree that it made him one of the top few salaries in baseball.
Molina? He doesn't have a bat, but he calls a damn good game behind the plate (and has an arm to catch players stealing).
Posada to the DL (again)..what a gem of a contract Cashman gave him. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/story/11712299 At least Arod homered twice today...can't get back soon enough. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/story/11712330
