Why not put Gholston back at his natural position of DE, which is an area of need for us, and let Westerman fill the open LB'r position?
3-4 DEs are not the same as 4-3 DEs...and it's not worth it pay a guy the type of coin Vernon's being paid simply to be a situational pass rusher
well if it doesnt work out at OLB then maybe give him a shot there before we cut all ties with him... and its only been a year we will see this year and could make a real decision i guess..
A lot of 3-4 defenses have one of the LBs play what's sometimes called the Elephant position, a standup defensive end whose sort of a de/lb hybrid. I know some people claim that using an Elephant means its not really 3-4, thats a debate for people who care about terminology. Anyway, my position is that OSU correctly evaluated Slowston's abilities when they assigned him what they call the Leo role, which is sort of like the Elephant linebacker in other schemes, though closer to being a de than the Elephant. Anyway, I think the people complaining that Slowston will never play DE as his primary position are wrong, I think he will end up playing something like the Elephant LBer position for the rest of his career. Being a true OLB just isn't going to happen for this man.
I mean in the long run if he doesnt work out we could thank ole Mangini for this pick... and we were far warned that this guy had the biggest potential for being a bust.. and them going mainly on his workout stats instead of on the field play...
Yeah dude it's fuckin killin me I have so much shit to do over the next week it's unreal...wat year are you?
Great to see a kid leave money on the table because he wants to play for the Jets. UDFA or not it's great to hear that there is a budding aspiration to want to play for Rex Ryan's aggressive D's. Now only if we started to hear the same things about Schott's aggressive O and I'd really start to get happy.....
Intersting. I have heard good things about Westerman. I think everyone needs to relax about Gholston though. He's going to have a big year. Give him time to learn coverage.
Are you talking about Gholston? I really, really think Mangini was in his head. I think Rex Ryan will allow him to go out and get after the QB like he knows how to. I really fully expect Gholston to have a great 2nd season.
The only problem with that theory is that even in college he had long stretches (sometimes whole games) where he was able to be single teamed, neutralized, etc. I pray for the best, but he may simple be what he is. I hope that isnt the case...
