He is not Hispanic. He is a Latino. His family is not from Spain. And yes, I do think the JETS will get a lot of new Latino Fans.

Dude, I live in Los Angeles, I'm half hispanic and I went to USC grad school. If you can't tell that the Mexicans in this town have given their souls over to the Raiders than you are insane or making up the part about living in LA. The number one football team in LA is the Raiders because LA county is 60% Mexican and thats their team. They won't switch to the Jets, just like they didn't switch to the Cowboys because of Tony Romo. Its true that the blacks from South Central LA have rooted for USC for generations, this was never picked up by any Mexican other than those who went there. Don't expect a tidal wave of LA support because of MS.
Latin means you are from the area around Rome called Latium in the classical period, currently called Lazio. Yes, hispanic literally means from Spain. But Latin means from Latium. Anyway, when the French invaded Mexico they created the term Latin America in order to emphasize that they had a similarity to the Mexicans and encourage support for their invasion. For whatever reasons people from latin america prefer latino to hispanic. This makes a much sense as blacks preferring people of color to colored people.

I didn't even say every Mexican was going to pull for the Jets. I know all about the Raiders homie - I get harassed more often than not for being a Jets fan. I said 1 out of every 12 USC fans would be supporting the Jets, through their support of Sanchez. I said his last name already makes him a demigod out here - and that's all I said about Mexicans. And if he's as successful as we hope he is, you're telling me you don't think Mexicans are going to support that last name? Every USC fan I know, supports USC players wherever they go - all I implied! And if Tony Romo was any good, as in, he wins in the postseason, there'd be more Romo jerseys in LA. It also hurts that Romo's career path went from San Diego to Eastern Illinois to Dallas. Sanchez being from Long Beach and going to college in Los Angeles makes him a true Angeleno. Angelenos are not just Mexican. Angelenos are anyone who lives in Los Angeles - but I shouldn't have to tell you that b/c you live in LA. Don't question my residence, or knowledge of my own neighborhood. My sanity? Question away. But I live in Silver Lake, lived in Atwater Village and frequent Echo Park. Long enough to see what it was like before gentrification and yuppies took over. East Side, homie. Where do you live? In the Valley? West Side? WEHO?!
Whatever dude, The government started to use the word Hispanic, and that's why "brown" people don't like the term. The People themselves started using Latino or Chicano (if your Mexican) and we should respect what they want to be referred to as. Case closed.
When I went to the JETS raiders game, the only other JETS fans besides me were women wearing Farve Jerseys. If Sanchez aka Snacthez can pull in more female and Latina fans, it would be a very good thing. peace
I think if he becomes a top QB in the league his following and the Jets along with him will be huge. If he can play to expectations he will be a Superstar, we will see Sanchez halking everything from peanuts to sneakers, he will be a golden boy. What always cracks me up is the media and people decribing him as a "third generation Mexican-American and by definition there is no such animal. A Mexican-American is someone from Mexico tha comes to America, he is a third generation American of Mexican decent. It has nothing to do with pride, heritage, or how one looks at ones self.
The bottom line here is that Sanchez, if he plays well and becomes a successful starter, will be very marketable to Latinos - and everyone else. If he is a bust, none of this will matter.
Please note: Sanchez isn't even fluent in Spanish. That's going to limit his Latino/chicao/hispanic/brown appeal.
That's funny. My friends who are Spanish insist that they aren't Hispanic since their families are from Spain. I guess no one is Hispanic by your reasoning. By the way, Hispanic is a broad term used to describe anyone from a Spanish speaking nation. Latino is more focused on Central America.
Of course not, he grew up in a largely white community in south Orange County. Doesn't mean he can't take pride in his heritage. He has still received recognition from the Hispanic/Latino/call it what you will community around here because of it.
