If I remember correctly, they didn't run the ball a whole lot period, but Ricky had a couple of drive sustaining carries out of the Wildcat. He was much more successful in the formation than Ronnie as the season wore on.

Ricky dropped a 30 yard pass out of the WC also.

Oh yeah, that was coming towards the sideline right at us. I waved my glass pipe at him and distracted him.

What the Jets ran with Brad Smith was similar, but was not what everyone is referring to as the Wildcat. The Wildcat is a variation on single-wing football. As someone mentioned, a single-wing offense is typically run using an unbalanced line and the ball is snapped directly to the running back (spinning fullback). It is the perfect offense for a team that is less talented and cannot just line up and smash someone in the mouth. It's built on deception and misdirection.

The Jets were basically running an option attack with Brad Smith at QB. If you wanted to compare it to something, it's more akin to the "spread" offense that has taken college football by storm.

Either way, we agree that it's a gimmick that a less talented football team relies on and it's a gimmick that I think Keeps coaches like Mangini and Herm Edwards up at night... If Herm stays up late thinking football at all.

I think Rex Ryan say's "Bring that #### on!!!!!!!!"

Rex is coming at you regardless of where the snap is going - Herm and Mangini are reading and NOT reacting looking like Bobo's...

I say Bring this on and I say Chad feels pain this year.

This is true, the Jets "Wildcat" is boring as hell and incredibly predictable.

Who's stating that the Miami Dolphins invented the wildcat??...

It usually works well when it's executed correctly, but you can't choose when it's going to work to perfection that's for certain. It's not garbage either, it's a great way of using misdirection to your advantage. Bellichick can lick his chop's as along as he wants, we're more concerned with dominating him / Patriots....

Undermanned is not the word that comes to mind when I think of Pennington, more like STEAL. The Jets can only wish they still had Pennington today. He'd be an excellent mentor for Sanchez, and someone you can have real confidence in other than that stiff K. Clemons...

That's your opinion, and that's fine. I personally think Henne is better than both of your QB's....

The funny thing is that when brad smith takes direct snaps or does some sort of trick play he almost always gains decent yardage. People just like to complain about it for some reason.

There was the one shitty time in the rain against Denver, but the complaining started way before then.

My HS coach 2 years back signed onto Miami's staff, and supposedly gave the Wildcat its name. Wildcat is my schools logo. Little fun fact for you ;)

Yeah when we ran it the first time we torched the Patriots with it. It was near the start of the season. Everyone was thinking of Miami as the same 1-15 team from the year before and we hadn't started off well yet. Ronnie Brown singlehandedly decimated the Patriots with it. I think he scored 5 td's with it. 4 rushing and 1 passing. The fact that the lowly Dolphins had pistol whipped the mighty Patriots with his gimmick offense made the news everywhere.

The Dolphins didn't invent the offense and they admit it. They just used it very well and it gave them the confidence to turn their season and club around. It got less effective as time went on but it did it's job in that first game for us.

I would you suggest you pay attention though. The Dolphins were really lacking in talent last year. They've seriously beefed up at every area. New talent at OL and WR, new Kordell Stewart/Michael Vick QB in Pat White. A lot of injured starters coming back. The Dolphins are in good shape and they actually have the talent to make it work even if you know it's coming.

The Jets do have one major thing in your favor though. You have Rex Ryan now. I'd feel much more comfortable trying to outsmart Mangenius.

This was certainly true in 2008. In games 4 through 10 of the 2008 season, Smith rushed the ball 10 times for 116 yards - what exactly was there to complain about? Then, as the season went down the tubes, he rushed it exactly twice in the last 6 games. It was yet another example of the moronic playcalling down the stretch.

The Dolphins used that BS formation against the Ravens and the Ravens turned that wildcat formation into a tame tabby.

you play any formation enough you can find a way to beat it.

Like you I'm sick of hearing about it, like it's something new and it's not.

There were a few teams that could defend it better than others, but we still ended up winning 9 of our last 10 games while using it as part of our offense....

It didn't work in the playoffs, that's true, but that doesn't make it a worthless system, or something you just decided to give up on. We're still adding pieces to it, so I wouldn't underestimate it heading into 2009. If newly drafted QB Pat White can do half of what people are assuming, it will be one very difficult formation to defend against....

I don't understand all of the people writing the Wildcat off as a gimmick. I'm pretty sure the forward pass was treated as a gimmick for a good while. Teams use what works at this level and it becomes part of the pro game. Shit, the 46 defense won a Super Bowl and it's never been widely used. Was that a gimmick?

    It's P*SSY BALL.....

Figures the team in Teal is going to play P*SSY BALL......

I think Miami is in for a good old fashion smackdown this year - I get that most of the fans are off the matt after the past decade of futility and they are super excited again...

But, I'd advise Miami fans to be a liottle more restrained and see what happens against a much harder schedule.....

And NO, I know exactly what Chad Pennington is and I'd rather not... Look at his career stats - Last year was pretty much the peak for the guy AND a miracle he stayed healthy - Again, I think better defenses are going to hit him a little more and chad takes a hit like my Grandmother.. Always takes that awkward retarted fall and bam, his shoulder is out...

Welcome back to the game Miami fans.. Enjoy P*SSY BALL. With P*SSY PENNINGTON.

Hey Blitz - Remember saying THIS:

No chance Saban / Mueller are foolish enough to waste time on a QB as bad as Pennington. Quite honestly, I'd rather have Fiedler back than go after Pennington...

    STEAL THAT.

We used it long before 2006, we used to use it as far back as 2001 I believe w/ Vinny splitting wide and Jordan taking the direct snap.

The object is to win, good coaches find ways to maximize talent. Miami clearly had alot less than we did last year yet they won 2 more games.
