Zach Potter. Could be another UDFA gem that Ryan develops.

You have no idea what you are talking about. 3-4 DE is more like a DT, not a 4-3 DE. A 4-3 DE is a more natural fit at LB as long as he can play standing up.

VG would stand ZERO chance of making it as an NFL 3-4 DE. ZERO.

Theres a reason all natural 4-3 DEs play OLB in the 3-4 and not DE in the 3-4. Jason Taylor, John Abraham, D. Ware, I could go on and on.

DE in the 3-4 = DT.

Has anyone SEEN Gholston? The man is a bodybuilder with <5% bodyfat. For him to put on more weight he'd have to go onto some hardcore bodybuilding reigeme. I can't imagine him wanting to go and put on some fat just to get his weight up... he's a bodybuilder first, football player second.

I think he could be the eventual answer at the very least. I was pulling to draft him in the mid rounds had we kept our #4 or #5. To get him as a UDFA is incredible.

The ignorance on this board sometimes amazes me. We're talking 'bout a base 34 defense with a little bit of 43 mixed in (and perhaps a little 46 also ) and people are dropping names like Gholston, Thomas and Pace to start at DE in the friggin' 34!! How many times does this have to be told: a 43 DE is not the same as a 34 DE! Jesus....

    Rant over

Now to stay on topic, like people have said Douglas is Ryan's version of Coleman, stout against the run, but mediocre at best against the pass, but still better than Coleman though so he should be able to generate a little more pressure on passing downs.

Douglas played for Baltimore last season, and he was actually pretty good 2 years ago as a 34 DE with the 9ers.

My guess is, that Rex feels, it?s not a big downgrade from Coleman to Douglas.

And I really liked DeVito, when he spelled Ellis last season.

Not a big downgrade is still a downgrade, unless you meant it really isn't, but then Coleman hardly had a Pro Bowl year for the Jets, either, and Mosely who backed up at DE is gone.

Odds are the Jets pick someone else up for the DL between now and OD.

Yeah really. If you see Thomas out there with his hand on the ground, most likely there's three other guys on the line, too. I highly doubt you see him play much, if any, 3-4 DE.

What's with the love affair with Mike Devito? The guy works his ass off and never takes a play off (which I absolutely love) but I still didn't see him making too many great plays on the field. Not saying to cut the guy right now but let's not get ahead of ourselves with this guy. He is average for a backup. I think we can do better with some of our UDFA although I don't know much about any of them.

..what? There were like one or two posts saying DeVito had some promise. In 3 pages, not a single person implied he should be starter.

I read this article on nyjets.com about Douglas it said he was in the top ten in tackles for a loss in like the last five years. I can not say alot about the guy but that stat alone tells me he is at least as good as Coleman & he knows the system to me that is a upgrade.

I remember reading this article also, but couldn't just put my finger on it where I read it
The artcle stated that Douglas had the second most TFLs in the league for the last few seasons and that Barf Scott had nothing but good things to say about him.

EDIT: Found it, newsday.com/sports/football/jets/ny-spjets0410,0,3978328.story (just put www on front of it)

It was not the 2nd most TFLs, it was the 3rd most.

I?m not sure how much, or if it really is a downgrade, but rex knows Douglas obviously very well, so i trust him, on that one. Coleman was solid, but wasn?t a factor at all in the passrush, maybe rex actually wasn?t happy about him, caus this in the first place.

I really liked mosley, but it seemed, that DeVito already passed him on the dephtchart

  16. I think what people are missing is that Mangini and Ryan play 2 different styles of 3-4.

Mangini's is a straight up 2 gap/ends playing 5 technique/read and react style defense..that means being stout at the POA, and "Bend but don't break". In this scheme none of our OLB's including Gholston would survive at DE playing a 5 technique.DL in that scheme must be Wide, Long and have good hands...and are simply taking up space for LB's to make plays.

Ryan's defense HAS some elements of a 2 gap scheme..but is alot more aggressive. What this entails is an attacking style of defense that runs to the football and tries to make plays/create turnovers. This element INCLUDES some 1 gap situations along the front 3 that would allow some smaller guys like Gholston to take some snaps there...as he'll be able to use his physical skills to rush up-field and disrupt w/o being worn down from constantly holding ground and simply holding off blockers from getting to the second level.

What I'm saying is that we have some flexibility within this..which is what ryan wants. He wants the stout 2 gap guys for certain situations(Jenkins/Ellis/Douglas/Devito/Brown) but also wants some multi-dimensional 1 gappers for OTHER situations(Jenkins/Ellis/Gholston/Pace/Thomas). When you factor in how diverse and aggressive this defense is schematically..the depth is not as bad as it first appears.

Jason Taylor....not I would never ever want that dusche bag on our team. I would rather rotate the fat ass drunks in the upper deck than play this dancing ferry. No offense to the fat ass drunks who sit in the upper deck on this board.

I have a feeling either Gholston, or Bryan Thomas will line up at the DE spot. It makes sense, especially for Gholston.

...no it doesn't - because both guys are too small to play 3-4 defensive end.

Vernon Gholston will line up at end when the Jets use the 4-3 in certain situations.
