How are we at the linebacker position?? Do you think gholston will live up to his draft expectations? What do you guys think?
Harris, Scott, and Pace are all very good starters. We could use an upgrade at the other OLB position (Gholston/Thomas). Thomas can play decent at times, I remember he looked real good in the 2006 season and the beginning of the 2008 season. Gholston is hard to get excited about, although I do believe he will make an impact at some level
Pace/Cactus/Gladys outside Harris/Scott inside That's a better than solid lineup, especially if Gladys comes around. I think he will and will eventually beat out Cactus for the spot. The problem I see is Harris has been gimpy and we have a serious lack of depth.
I'm a bit concerned about depth... but then again both Ryan and Pettine specialize in coaching LB's so if we have someone with talent in our reserves they are the best ones to spot it and coach it up. The fact we signed no one between FA and UDFA at the LB positions tell me they are confident in what we have.
you guys are always so crazy with this depth stuff you'd be hard pressed to find 3 other teams with a better starting line up of LB's then us and I doubt they have this incredible depth believe it or not, no team in the NFL is stacked at every position + "good depth" at every position
I think, Lawrence Taylor. Ryan will put Gholston in a position to line up upright off the edge, pick a hole and get into the backfield. Once he gets a small taste of success they'll build on it.
Asking the LBs To Attack Instead of Read & React... I believe this Rex Ryan defense is a much simpler defense to execute and a much harder defense to attack than Mangini's frozen-in-time version of last year. Once the OCs understood what Mangini would do if they did A, then he was paralyzed to do anything because he wanted to change everything, according to the defensive players. We're going to see different playing assignments out of the NYJs' LBs, so the jury's out in favor of the defensive scheme change.
I’m more worried about Harris – I think he is going to be the flop. Got a feeling he’s one of those guys who stands out on a shit defense…put him in a good one and he is the shit in the defense. I hope I’m wrong…
i have a feeling about gholston this year...he wont break out and be an animal but he will definitly take big strides over last year and be above average...i think this year is going to be a confidence builder...once he has that under him we'll see what he's got...
Haha, I have heard of Gholston being called Gladys before. Sorry to be uninformed, but why is Gholston called Gladys.
linebackers were pretty solid at linebackers,if vernon can be the nasty pass rusher that he is will be a great d,he's just not good in coverage but we didn't draft him to drop back in cover',JENKINS,RHODES,REVIS, SCOTT,LITO,PACE, HARRIS AND NEW AND IMPROVED GHOLSTON,,,,WATCH OUT BOYS
He should be solid. Last season he played injured, and then he returned to quickly from his injuries. The only problem I see with Harris is that he needs to stay on the field. He's an excellent inside backer when healthy, but he just needs to stay that way.
Dont sleep on harris he is a beast remember his rookie year he was like top 8 or 10 in tackles. he didnt get ne love cuz he he had jon beason and p willis in the spotlight
i think Whiteshoewillie or GreenMachine started a thread saying "his name is Gladys until he proves otherwise" I like the idea... I was willing to wait until after this season to judge him, but when I read a report that he "pulled up" during a Special Teams drill to avoid a blocking wedge, I turned on him. thats a very soft human being with tons of physical talent.... Him and Bobby Carpenter seem to have the same stigma coming out of Ohio State - fear of playing tough football.
I got that feeling in 2008. A lot of people are banking on some phantom injury in the '08 offseason... 2009 will tell us the truth.
I think I heard it from Cakes.. and I might be wrong but I think it's from Letterman. "Until you make a tackle, that's your name".
When it comes to Harris I want to know what happened to the sideline to sideline speed he had rookie year. Was it the extra weight he put on? Injuries? If it was the weight he has to go back to his rookie weight.
