Since we can actually grade based off of performance 2006 - New York Jets Rd Sel # Player Position School 1 4 D'Brickashaw Ferguson T Virginia 1 29 Nick Mangold C Ohio State 2 49 Kellen Clemens QB Oregon 3 76 Anthony Schlegel LB Ohio State 3 97 Eric Smith DB Michigan State 4 103 Brad Smith WR Missouri 4 117 Leon Washington RB Florida State 5 150 Jason Pociask TE Wisconsin 6 189 Drew Coleman CB Texas Christian 7 220 Titus Adams DT Nebraska http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?season=2006&round=round1 Other than the 1st round and 4th round picks we got little out of the picks, ironically as much as we boost New England's drafting ability they had a pretty weak draft overall.
NE has been having medicore drafts for years, people don't realize this b/c no matter what NE does they get applauded. Outside of Mayo they have struggled inr ecent years.
Link needs fixing. But that is the perfect example of having tons of picks and getting little out of it. I said it all weekend, having more picks doesn't mean you're getting tons of talent to your team. You're lucky if you find 3 impact players in any draft. Quality over Quantity.
Thanks for pointing out the link, and yup it doesn't matter how many picks you get a year if they end up useless or with another team in the end.
My grades for each pick: Brick-A- Mangold-A+ Clemens-D Schlegel the Boar Hunter-F- E Smith-C- B Smith-C Leon-A Posciask-F Coleman- B- Adams- whatever
I completely forgot Eric Smith was a 3rd rounder. wtf Overall I think we did very well in '06. Washington and Mangold are two of our best players, D'Brick and B Smith contribute, and I still think Clemens was a good choice.
I wouldn't even give Coleman a B-. Regardless of which round he was drafted in, the guy is a liability every time he steps on to the field.
7 of those guys are still on the team, which is good. Three are excellent players, which is better. A good draft, IMO.
Can you really call a 6th rounder a D-? The fact that he saw playing time should automatically get him something better than a D
The fact that he sees the field and is a constant liability while on the field, a target for opposing offenses to throw to, is what makes him a D-. And no, I'm not thinking of just the one "slip" he had, it's the entire body of work.
Even if he just ends up as a special teamer which he likely will be after what we added in the secondary, he would still be considered a decent 6th round pick
2006 was a good draft. The Jets got real value on several picks and added utility and depth on several more. If you had this kind of draft every year you'd be an 11-12 win team before long. Of course getting the 10 picks is not realistic at all so you're not going to have this kind of opportunity very often. For people defending the tradeups of recent years: Would you rather have D'Brick and Mangold plus Washington and several roleplayers or would you take Revis and Harris or Sanchez and Greene? If the Jets actually used their picks as something other than consolidation the odds are really good we'd have come out of the last few drafts with a couple more players like Leon and good depth to protect against injuries. Put another way: we're never finding Jason Ferguson or Tom Brady if we keep treating our mid to late round picks like they aren't worth executing.
The risk you play with trading down is what has often occurred in NE's drafts is you reduce the actual chance for quality in the draft, you get basically little to no chance for getting a star in compromise to what you hope is a lot of depth, something you can get away with if you are already have your stars and is an elite team, doesn't work so well if you are trying to transition into that good to great team. Also for every one Fergusons or Bradys, there are 50 guys who are cut before the season starts
Exactly. Pretty hard to argue with it. We got 2/5 of our O-line who play every game, Leon in the 4th makes the whole draft, considering he's better than Bush who people wanted to give away the store for. Clemens isn't great but still a QB who has played and enters camp as our only veteran QB, and a couple more players. Granted it was a total rebulding draft and the cupboard was empty, but overall they did an excellent job. We couldn't be talking about a franchise QB today if the framework of the O-line was put in place then, and again we got the best player on the team, Leon, in the 4th round.
D'Brickashaw B+ Mangold A+ Clemens B/F (I think he has "B" talent but has been given "F" chances, evens out to a C-) Schlegel F Smith C Smith B- Washington A+ Jason Pociask D+ Coleman C- Adams F Overall: B-
While you are right to a pint, I think the Revis and Harris trades have worked out very well. I think the Trade up for Sanchez is going to be rememberd as one of hte great moments in team history, but that remains to be seen. We have also traded several picks for starters and that can not be completely left out if you are thinking in terms of over all depth for the organization. Trading down in the Second in '07 to get Thomas Jones was a good move. Trading a a 3rd and 5th for Jenkins was a great move. The 3rd for Favre looked very good till he fell apart in the last 5 games. Now a 5th + a 2010 pick for Sheppard is out there and remains to be seen if its the right move. 2006 was a very good draft class for us. I'm looking forward to seeing us have a deep draft calss in 2010. The 2007 and 2009 drafts were about getting a few stud players to fill obvious holes. As long as that trend does not continue every year we will be fine.
To get the average grade in this case, what is the best way to go about it? We need some inverse value weighting. Like Leon working out to be a "A", IMO, is worth more from a probability standpoint than Mangold is in the first with an A+ yield. I think your grading is very fair. Mangold is at least an A and when one considers he was drafted 29, I believe, that is good. You may be a hald grade low on Brad Smith because he does make a good contribution on special teams.
Brick, Mangold, and Leon make it an amazing draft. 2 pro bowl future all pros and a good LT who will start for 10 years. Brick was a pro bowl alternate for the 09 Pro Bowl. I just learned that. thats a great draft
