So, we've discussed what we got out of the draft: Sanchez Greene Slauson However, with the complaints, I thought I'd look at who we could have taken if we had stayed put: 1) Jeremy Maclin - Now, nobody thought he would last as long as he did, and the argument can be made that Cleveland would have taken Crabtree if they had stayed put, sending Maclin to the 49ers. Still, let's suppose he somehow still dropped...and let's pretend our team wasn't interested in Percy Harvin, which would have been a disaster... 2) Shonn Greene - We were high on him. I have no doubt that we would have taken him over Gilbert, since we already did. 3) ??? Who do we take here that wasn't available in the 4th as well? Dorrell Scott? Big reach for McKillop or Brinkley? 4) Anthony Hill - We clearly needed a TE, and he's a great blocker. 6) Slauson - I'll leave him in here, since we do in fact need an OG to build for the future. 7) ??? Again, who is the pick here? Do we take King, who ended up a UDFA and signed elsewhere? Looking at who went after our pick in the 3rd, and understanding who our front office clearly wanted, I'm not sure the value was there that some of the complainers think was there. So, we essentially passed up Maclin and 2 unknown picks (seriously, please suggest to me who should have been taken there, because I have no clue) to grab a potential franchise QB. I don't see how anyone can still consider this a poor deal in hindsight. And yes, I'm aware that we left holes at safety and DE. Is Coleman/Douglas really that much better than Douglas/post-June 1st FA?
Maclin and Greene would have helped clemens, but if the confidence is this low in Clemens, then getting Sanchez was a great idea.... I'd take Sean Smith from the Fins with the round 2 pick, and get greene where we got him. Maclin Smith Greene Slauson and a kicker/punter.
Sounds pretty nice except we wouldn't have a QB and we would have taken Harvin over Maclin. Imagine that, this board would have went crazy if that happened. Now there are only a few of the posters that don't understand the Qb position. For those that aren't on board with the Sanchez pick, think about the fact that we would have drafted Percy Harvin if we didn't trade up then tell me you wouldn't rather have an elite QB prospect then a slash type player that is a headcase.
I look at like this, the Jets do their homework. If they felt that strongly about Sanchez than it was for a reason. If they felt the same for Greene where he was than it was for a reason. I support the FO and generally their track record has not been too bad over the last 4 or 5 years. We can't bring up Gholston yet. His year is this year. If he duplicates last year's performance this year than the bust flag has to be raised.
I was happy with the draft, and after reading that we signed Jamaal Westerman as an UFA I'm even happier. While Westerman isn't a game changer, he is definitely a gamer who brings it on every play. He could definitely see some playing time as a DE lined up in a 4-3, or come off the edge as an OLB in a 3-4. This is a really smart move imo...Maybe I'm biased since I've really enjoyed watching him at Rutgers for the last few years, but he can def contribute... I'm also extatic that Percy Harvin didn't get within a country mile of the Jets. I was pumped when we grabbed Stuckey 2 years ago, and I think he has the game to start for us...As long as we keep our recievers healthy we might not be in as bad a shape as is being made...I'm sure there will be a few cuts after June 1st that will be interesting....Depth at WR will no doubt be addressed then.
Something else to think about: if we stayed put at 17 I'm afraid the Jets would have taken Freeman. If that was the alternative then I'm thrilled we traded up for Sanchez.
The point was that our FO was really high on Greene. They said last night that he was their 2nd round guy, so it was a no brainer for them to move up and grab him when he fell to the 3rd. I doubt they pass on him in that round. Exactly. To be perfectly honest, I don't think it "sounds pretty nice", especially when compared to what we got, and that's our "ideal" draft if we pass on Sanchez and follow our team's preferences. I'm not even sure we would have taken Maclin over Harvin, which REALLY would have killed this draft. We got MUCH better value than the alternative.
Or they may have traded up a few spots to take Freeman even though he ended up going at 17...they were getting a QB, it seems, no matter what.
Freeman was a possibility, although they were pretty clear in saying that they would have passed on Freeman. Sanchez was the only QB in the first round that they wanted. I think it's more likely we would have seen Harvin in the first round and an attempt to trade our 2nd and those 3 players for Quinn. If you think of it that way, our draft becomes even better. I really don't see how anyone can think we screwed up with this pick, but for some reason, people are still arguing it.
