I don't think Greene would have lasted to the Jet's Rd 3 pick. Glenn Coffee was drafted by the Niner's just before the Jet's original Rd 3. Glenn Coffee can't even hold Greene's jockstrap. I'm fine with the trade, it's clear Tanny went over the board last night and made his move.
Exactly my thought, this pick is a clear message to Jones that he can't hold us to ransom over a new contract. I just hope we can pick up a WR and blocking TE from free agency...
Just watched Greene's YouTube highlights. He looks like another Marion Barber III. Can't complain about the selection, just wondering if Tanny panicked and that's why we don't have a 4th (or a 7th) now. Tanny is throwing away picks (giving them away to other teams) as if they were yesterday's trash.
I think Cleveland could've taken him. They have problems at RB. Greene will end up being huge for him. If we had missed out on a good RB and TJ got hurt/declined, our entire offense would've fallen apart. I feel comfortable with a Greene/Leon duo. I think Greene is a guy who can get 15 carries a game and be a great closer like Marion Barber is.

We spend too many picks as an organization trying to guarantee a result. There are no guarantees in life and particularly not in the NFL with it's high injury rates and short careers. That's why teams that promote depth do better overall than teams that spit on it like we do. I liked the Sanchez trade up but I have not liked any of the other tradeups this team has done since Bradway became GM. We're under .500 since then because we don't have a basic respect for what works and what does not. David Harris's injury last year was a prime example of why you do not trade multiple picks to take one "surefire" guy in the NFL without running systemic risk as a result. Having an offensive lineman go down this year would cripple us at this point, with a young QB to protect in the bargain. I'd have taken the best player available on the rest of our picks if I were the Jets after trading up for Sanchez, trading down a bit if I needed to do that to pick up another offensive lineman for depth. Ditto for the defensive line. This strategy that we're apparently committed to in the draft does not work in the modern NFL. The only team that has been successful over the long-term doing it was George Allen's Washington Redskins and he was a unique coach who could make it work. He's also one of the few NFL head coaches who was able to do well consistently without having a great QB.
Don't sweat the blocking TE. Just as in Fantasy, TE's can always be acquired. We desperately need a stud WR, however, and what is Tann. going to do about it?
I don't know if it's fodder or not, but this guy not only got back to school, but he worked his way up from SIXTH on the depth chart.
Point taken...I agree that they need depth. However, my question also was..Who would you pick up in rounds 4 and 7 that would have made a difference?
Who I would take is beside the point. Good NFL front offices manage to find players worth drafting at the spots they are at. They prepare for the eventuality that injuries will deplete the team at key positions over the course of the season and they have enough qualified players around to cover at a minimal level at least if that occurs. If you look at who wins Super Bowls you find teams that draft a lot of players and sort it out in training camp. The reason these teams win is that they have more depth to start with, which leads to better talent on the field and a better capability to recover from injuries that would devastate slimmer rosters.

I don't get why the knock on him would be "lack of intelligence" because he struggled to keep his school grades up...If I take anything away from his inelegability in 07, it's that he saw where he was, had a plan, and manned up and did what needed to be done. He put in the time, effort, and work...Def the kind of guy I want on my team...Sounds pretty smart to me.

Not fast but has good vision and may actually be able to break a tackle and not go down on first contact. Thomas "Overrated" Jones's days are numbered...be nice to get a decent DL or TE for him. I don't like the playbook comment, since we know that he had academic troubles. Schotty is not known for simple playbooks...and lack of ability to grasp the playbook has hampered many-a-runningback. I like the pick though...perfect compliment to Leon.
