All this talk about squiring draft picks let's look at the almighty Patsies. From 06 and 07 they had 19 draft picks and only have 7 of them still on their roster. In 07 alone they had 9 picks and only have 2 left on their roster. Having picks for picks sake doesn't mean you get depth automatically
So you're arguing that because the Pats have such great depth that rookies can't crack their roster easily that this is an argument not to stockpile picks to accumulate great depth? Really?
Really, there's just no need unless you move TJ, and TJ has little to no value where you're better off keeping him.
That's not the entire story. They were the SB champ in 05 and they have maintained their competitiveness at the top by a combination of drafts and trade of picks and after finishing ahead of us again with a second string QB they go into this draft with more picks and more ability to make moves than we do. They also have as good a QB prospect behind Brady that they drafted as we do competing for our starting QB position. They also gave up picks for both Moss and Welker who are still on their roster and are two superstars.
They haven't had that great of depth. That's why they keep bringing in aging veterans. I'm saying that stockpiling draft picks for the sake of having extra picks doesn't guarantee success. Really
Two years ago I was hoping for Josh Wilson in the 2nd round. The Jets original 2nd round choice was the 59th overall selection, right? I was hoping for Wilson to be available then. I liked Revis more than Wilson, but felt there was more value in taking Wilson in round 2 and taking a lineman of some sort in round 1. Revis has played exceptionally well, so it's tough to say trading up to get him was a blunder. As for Wilson, he didn't play much in 2007. He made a bunch of good plays in 2008, but also got picked on quite a bit. He had a big INT return for a touchdown in the Mike Singletary Pants Game. He also destroyed the Jets in the infamous Jets-Seahawks game. That's the problem with trading up. You might trade up and get a good player, but if you stay where you are, you can get two good players. That way, down the road, you don't have to overpay to get a guy in free agency.
I have no issue trading up, the Giants gave up a boatload of picks for Eli and were able to fill in nicely with good drafts and FA aquisitions. The real problem with our drafts is VG when you pick a bust at 6 it costs the team big time and I'm not convinced yet that Keller was a good value move up based on last year. I think if you trade up you better do a great job getting talent in later rounds who can fill in your roster at a reasonable price.
6 of the last 8 Super Bowls have been won by three teams: The Patriots (3 times), The Steelers (twice) and the Colts Here's how many picks those teams have executed in the NFL draft over the last decade (1999-2008) Patriots - 85 picks Colts - 81 picks Steelers - 80 picks The Jets have executed 72 picks in that time span, how exactly are they supposed to compete with teams that effectively have had an extra year or more worth of draft picks over the last decade? Recently the trend has been even worse. The other two Super Bowl winners - the Giants and the Buccaneers also have executed more picks than the Jets but I leave them out of the analysis because of the Eli Manning trade, which compressed 4 picks into a QB and because the Bucs were the end of the previous regime and the fact that they have drafted as many players as they have recently means very little about how they won the Super Bowl in the 2002 season. The Bucs have been much better than the Jets though in recent years as they accumulated a very deep roster by picking extra players every year.
Look at last year we moved up to take Keller who looks like he may be a nice player but he clearly isn't a complete TE. You can make an argument that TE is more of a need going into this draft than it was going into last years draft and we moved up into the first round to draft a TE.
Dustin Keller is a versatile athlete though -- I doubt the coaching staff wanted to get rid of Chris Baker in early 2008. Taking a blocking tight end late in the draft isn't going to hurt us...
All four of those teams (giants steelers patriots and colts) all have franchise QBs. Something we sorely lack. I'm hoping that ends today with a trade up to get Sanchez. If we can't get Sanchez I don't see us trading up.
