http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/9490416/Sources:-Chiefs-agree-to-deal-Gonzalez-to-Falcons Tony Gonzalez is finally getting his wish. The Chiefs have agreed to trade the perennial Pro Bowl tight end to the Atlanta Falcons for a second-round pick in the 2010 draft, FOXSports.com has learned. Gonzalez has already spoken to both the Chiefs and Falcons about the deal, according to sources. Gonzalez has been the subject of trade rumors since asking out of Kansas City in October. Last month, however, Kansas City owner Clark Hunt indicated that his prized tight end would remain with the organization. "We certainly will not seek a trade for Tony," Hunt told the Kansas City Star. "I think he's excited about the changes we've made here. I think he recognizes that with Todd (Haley) as the head coach, we're going to have an exciting offense and one that will feature the passing game." Since the end of a 2-14 season, the Chiefs have been in rebuilding mode. They installed Scott Pioli as general manager and Haley as head coach and also traded a pick in this year's draft for former Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel. After Gonzalez's trade request in October, then-general manager Carl Peterson said no team that Gonzalez was willing to go to made a good enough offer. Gonzalez has been the symbol of the Chiefs offense for the past 12 seasons, making 10 consecutive Pro Bowls and six All-Pro teams. Kansas City drafted him with the 13th overall pick in 1997.
Great deal for Atlanta and since next year is supposed to be a great draft, great for KC, who is going to be picking high next year anyways....
Not sure if I would've pulled a 2nd for Gonzalez. A 3rd would've made more sense if I was the Falcons GM. But they did need a TE for Matt Ryan and they got one of the best in the game. So much for thinking the Falcons would draft Pettigrew. If the Eagles don't draft him (which I highly doubt they will) Pettigrew could fall as as far as the middle of the 2nd round.
True, but they get a Pro Bowl tight end without giving up anything this year. And I'd be shocked if Pettigrew wasn't round one.
Forgot about the Bills/Eagles trade. The way I see it, they could be sitting pretty regardless. They have a few holes on the OL and DL. If they pick up their LT with the 11th pick and maybe a DL/OLB at #28 to help their anemic pass rush, they'd still have a shot at Pettigrew early in the 2nd. Amazingly, they'd be filling a lot of holes with that kinda draft.
Because out side of Keller we have 0 useful TE's on the roster. Why the fuck do you have to ask a question with such an easy answer?
I'd be disappointed if I was a Chiefs fan. I think they could've won that division next year; their offense with Cassell, LJ, Tony G, and Bowe was looking good. Add to that additions like Vrabel and probably Aaron Curry to the defense, plus the Broncos losing Cutler, the Raiders being the Raiders, and the Chargers struggling mightily last year, I think they could've won the AFCW.
Great. Now we can trade further down in the 1st and still grab Pettigrew as we don't have to worry about the Falcons being intersted in him. Saturday can't get here soon enough!
This is goi g to benefit matt Ryan a ton and hurt matt cassell. I think kc made a mistake with this move
Can the Falcons finally string together two consecutive winning seasons? I don't know, but this trade should help.
There are rumors that the Chiefs may have another deal brewing where they drop from no. 3 and pick up a new 2nd round pick possibly from Washington where the skins would get Sanchez
He didn't want to be there anymore. At least the Chiefs are getting something decent in return. Smart teams get rid of their stars before they fall apart.
does anyone think that we should've landed gonzo... i mean this price is practically nothing for a stud like gonzo, a 2nd next yaer? it would give us more weapons which we lack...
