Hopefully. Like I said in another thread, since Tanny plays no part in scouting players he has to make a lot of trades to look like he's doing something. If I had known that the boi from troi website was going to close I would have saved all those photos of Cushing and Sanchez looking like they about to play hide the sausage with each other. I know thats a low blow, so to speak, but I really want to do something to kill the Sanchez hype. I will say this, trading up to draft Mark Sanchez would be a good way of introducing the younger guys to what SOJ is all about.
2 Years ago, Mark Sanchez could not beat out John David Booty who in my opinion was just an ok QB... Now Sanchez is the greatest thing since sliced bread after 1 year at the helm at USC? I'm not buying the hype for a second.
John David Booty was also an established player in USC's program... Booty threw 29 TDs to 9 INTs in 2006 - I think Pete Carroll made the right decision in starting the older, more experienced quarterback. JDB is a mediocre pro quarterback, but he was a very solid college passer. You don't fucking understand - Mark Sanchez played at USC because he is the best of the best - that's why every dominant player in the west goes to USC. That's why they are consistently a powerhouse in college football. Pete Carroll brings in the nation's best talent year in and year out. Mark Sanchez was California's #1 prospect and the United States' #1 quarterback prospect. You know who else got that US #1 QB rating the next year (2006): this year's #1 overall pick...Matt Stafford
Mark Sanchez is hot only b/c this is a shit draft class. I would rather let Seattle or Washington get suckered on Matt Leinart Junior than us trading our entire draft to pick a guy who interviews awesome and looks good in a suit. I am from SEC country, USC may rule the West but the South is where it's at. BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK national champs baby...
I go to an SEC school right now (South Carolina) -- I know that the SEC is the best CONFERENCE in college football, but USC is one of the best teams. USC would've been THE favorite to win a national championship if Mark Sanchez returned. The Gators won games based on a gimmicky offense and speed. USC wins with a pro-style offense and talent. How many Gators off of that National Championship team are going in the first round? ...maybe one in 2009. Carlos Dunlap and maybe one other in 2010. USC will have at least 4 taken in the first round this year and one was a walk-on backup. Mark Sanchez doesn't compare to Matt Leinart or Carson Palmer for that matter -- he's plays a different style that both... I truly believe if he would've stayed for his senior year at USC, the Trojans would've dominated and Sanchez would've been a top ten pick in 2010 as well. You can use the shit draft class excuse all you want, but Mark Sanchez is an elite player and a mediocre-at-best draft class. Don't know one player because the majority of the players suck. That's like saying Aaron Curry is only rated high because the class is piss poor. What's wrong with trading two to three picks for a player that is arguably the best player in the draft? ...you said it yourself: this is a "shit" draft class, so why not get it's best offensive player?
This is a weak argument, Booty was one of the top QBs in the country and would have been ranked even higher than that if he had stayed for his senior of HS. Booty's HS coach was ... Booty's father. His daddy got fired and out of loyalty his son quit the team and the school and enrolled in USC early, it all got worked out somehow. How high was Sanchez ranked as a HS junior? As high as Booty was? My biggest objection to the Sanchez hype is he isn't athletic enough, weak arm, okay mobility. Booty was actually a slightly better athlete. Someday Booty will greatly outperform his draft position, guy is good. And Sanchez will greatly underperform his draft position. Please dear god, no Sanchez.
Just one question, who the fuck is he going to throw to? Even if you give him the rookie treatment and have him ride the pine he's still going to have to deal with a sub-standard WR corps next year, even if we get a top WR prospect. Unless they see something no one else does in Clowney or Stuckey, we better not do this deal. Even if we do manage to land some top WR talent in the draft next year, the QB prospects are going to be even better than the WR prospects. Bradford, Robinson, Tebow, and McCoy all coming out? How close to getting fired do you have to be to not want to sit back and wait for that? Put the smaller pieces in place now and then later you can trade up for a bigger one when you don't have that many holes to fill.
This is a weak argument? What? JDB wasn't even a 5-star prospect, but he may have been - we'll never know because he left school after his junior year and enrolled at USC. Vince Young, Marcus Vick, and Trent Edwards were ranked ahead of him though. Yes, Mark Sanchez was ranked higher than JDB - Mark Sanchez was the #1 rated player in his state and at his position. He was named to a bunch of different first teams in Cali as a junior - he was a highly rated prospect since his sophomore year of high school. No athleticism? Sanchez ran a 4.70 40 as a senior in high school. That's pretty fast for a pocket quarterback. He flies around in the pocket. Booty seems like a stiff sometimes. He has a great arm - I believe Mayock said something like Sanchez's arm strength won't hold him back at the next level...he has enough of an arm to make all the throws. Mark Sanchez is one of the smartest QBs that I've seen in a long time -- he's great at reading defenses. You can't teach poise and leadership, which are two of his best qualities. The guy has great accuracy on the move - he knows when to put touch on the ball and when to fire it in there... For you to say that John David Booty is a better quarterback than Mark Sanchez is hilarious. Wow.
Its not "hilarious" to say JDB is better than MS. During the year they split time at QB JDB strongly outperformed MS. JDB's junior year had the same stats as MS, including the same dominating performance in the Rose Bowl. Booty is slightly more athletic, he will edge out MS career wise.
I'm not advocating a move to draft Sanchez but I like your argument about him being a smart QB... I want a smart cerebruel QB vs some big arm athlete. Now call me a freak but I believe in history and history says a USC QB has never been a starting QB on a SB winning team....
I'm pretty sure it's true. The closest would be Rob Johnson, who has a ring backing up Brad Johnson in Tampa Bay. As far as Sanchez, I lived down in Orange County for quite some time. I've seen a lot of QBs head off to college with high expectations, from the Johnson brothers and Steve Stenstrom to Palmer/Leinart/Sanchez/Barkley. The only other kid I've seen garner as much attention and hero worship as Sanchez down there is Matt Barkley, and that's going on right now. Of course, we don't know how Sanchez will turn out in the NFL for sure, and I think it's ridiculous to assume either way, but if anyone really wants to base assumptions on high school play, he's a lock.
This report is BS, according to the draft value chart giving up the 17 and their second get them in the ballpark of 8. I can't see the Jets trading up for anyone other then Sanchez, if he is there at 8 and the Jets are convinced in him, then they should give up whatever they need to get him. I doubt it would be a 3rd in addition to the 1st & 2nd, maybe a 4th or 5th but if they require a 3rd and the Jets are convinced him then give up the picks and finally get a QB we can believe in. They cannot trade up for anyone other then Sanchez and at this point it is wishful thinking that he even makes it to 8. You cannot make this trade without knowing he is there, even if it means giving up some more value to secure knowing you will have a chance of drafting him. STL, Seattle and Cleveland all could and should draft him in the top 5 plus you have the Skins and Broncos that could trade up into the top 5 for him. It is a stretch right now to believe he will get to 8.
If true and we make a deal for the #8th Pick its with out a doubt going to be Sanchez. I Like him at QB but i rather save picks and draft a speedster at wideout at #17.
I've read a lot of posts here questioning his arm strength. Fact of the matter is he doesn't have a Brett Favre, Jay Cutler, Matt Stafford arm. But you don't need a Favre, Cutler, Stafford arm to win. The important thing to remember is Sanchez has the arm strength to make every single throw he needs to. I've seen a lot of posts talking about how he has little experience. His little experience helped to defeat two top ten teams last year (Ohio St. and Penn St.) by throwing for 585 yards and 8 TDs with only 1 INT in those two games. With his little playing experience he's known as one of the best at reading defenses. That is so important when you have to play Bill Belichick twice a year. From an athletic stand point, he's not going to dazzle you like Donovan McNabb but he has good enough mobility to evade pass rushers and is amazing at throwing on the run. In this draft there are only two QBs that are potential franchise QB's and we would be lucky enough to grab Sanchez.
what went on in HS has nothing to do with what Booty can do in the NFL. if Booty was as talented as you say, he'd be the starter in Minnesota. He can't beat out Jackson and Rosenfels?
this whole "weak QB class" bullshit is such a farce. If a QB class sucks, then there is a good chance that maybe one or two players go in the 1st round. Freeman may seem like the hot item now, but could fall out of the 1st in a fashion Quinn fell out of the top 20 in 07. In Pennington's draft year - he was the only single QB taken in the 1st round. To think he's another Matt Leinart is foolish - he is more mature and tougher than Leinart, and his the values to handle the new york spotlight. Leinart would have been killed here faster than he was in Arizona. its a bad comparison, especially since Sanchez worked his ass off during the combine to prove to teams he isn't like Leinart, and I don't just mean on the field at Indy.
What scares me about USC players the past decade or so is that they are basically playing on an NFL-caliber team against college opponents, so they often look better than they are.
