I agree with the high DE ranking. Yes, we have a hole at the #1 receiver spot, but we also have some unknowns like David Clowney who could well develop into starters at the position. We have nothing as far as DE depth goes, and nobody on the roster who can take over for Ellis soon. It really is our most pressing need. I'd probably put QB a bit lower since we have 3 unknowns, but our CS sees a lot of promise. Still, if we had a chance at Sanchez, I wouldn't complain. I might put Guard ahead of Tackle due to Faneca's age, but both positions need depth. If there's a #14, it's Punter.
Seems like a pretty logical rundown to me. I would just make a couple of comments. Being that the QB situation is pretty unclear - as far as whether we have a serious starting QB and decent backup or whether we'll be starting from square one next year - it's a little hard to know exactly where to put the need at that position until it plays out. The other thing I would say is that I would probably put the overall need at TE a bit higher than at WR based solely on the fact that we have an actual empty hole at the 2nd TE position right now. I agree that it will be more important for us to have an impact player at WR than at TE, being that we already have Keller, but we at least have a number of good WR prospects on the roster already.
Where to begin.... Depth 1. Defensive End Def need a project player that will be starter in year or two 2. Tight End We have Depth its the fact we got no one that is a credible blocker thats the problem 3. Offensive Tackle Again future starter would be nice I'm not a big fan of any of our OL depth 4. Wide Receiver Dont think we need anyone besides a surefire #1 I think we have a nice young corps of WR with the exception of B. Smith which I think should be cut. 5. Offensive Guard See tackle 6. Nose Tackle Should be higher was shown in 2nd half of season what happens to our defense when Jenkins isn't in or near 100% 7. Cornerback I think we will do the New Orleans route with Lito to get out of the 2010 draft pick. 8. Runningback Think should be higher as well TJ I dont believe will be able to have the same type of season as last year. I'm glad LW will be getting more carries but we need a 3rd RB 9. Quarterback Toughest call we def got depth I believe we have our QB on the roster and B. Smith for intensive purpose if he stays on roster could be 3rd QB hey it worked for Tom Tupa 10. Center Someone as a just incase but see us getting one unless its UDFA 11. Outside Linebacker All depends on Gholston. I like what I saw out of Murrell last year in preseason though he never or at least I never saw him get time in regular season 12. Safety Don't think Leonard is long term solution def should be higher need someone to groom for starter unless Elam improves 13. Inside Linebacker With some of the rumors out there about D Harris I could see us picking up one in the mid rounds
Isn't James Dearth the long snapper slash TE the only other guy on the roster? That doesn't seem adequate unless we have someone else that I'm missing.
There is no way in hell DE is a bigger need then QB or WR. We have quality starters at DE with a decent backup. We can't say the same about the QB or WR position. I agree we need some better depth, we could use better depth up and down the roster, we could also use someone to groom to be a starter at some point. In terms of overall need though, QB and WR is by a mile the biggest needs for this team.
Thought we had Keller someone else plus the joke we are trying to make into a TE. I did my anaylsis off my memory your more then likely right though
I say DE is a bigger need because Kenyon Coleman and Shaun Ellis are not young, and our DL wore down down the stretch last year. On paper, it looks crazy to argue it's a bigger need than QB or WR, and you might be right, but in terms of draft needs, I think it is. I don't think a rookie quarterback would upstage Clemens or Ratliff in their first year, as neither of whom has gotten a shot anyway. As for wide receiver, that's another position where we definitely need an impact player, but drafting for depth in the middle rounds isn't a major need as I think David Clowney, Chansi Stuckey, and Brad Smith could do as well as a middle round guy. Still, none are proven at all, which is why it was 4th on my depth need.
First Round: DE Second Round: WR Third Round: NT Fourth Round: TE Sixth Round: OL Seventh: OL Based on what I perceive as our needs. DE, WR, NT, TE, OL
I'm surprised you have NT listed so far down the priority list for depth need. I'd put that at or near the top.
Pretty solid. If Rex Ryan is serious about this RUN RUN RUN game plan. I just can't see us passing on Moreno, especially since TJ is getting up there in years. Moreno is a game changer coming out of the toughest college conference. We can't pass on him if he is available at 17 -- which in all likelihood, he should be.
I agree with Royce here. I love Keller, but have no confidence that he can help the running game as a blocker. He's supposedly bulking up and working on it, but I'll believe he is an adequate blocker when I see it. TE is the number one need for me. Yes I want to be stronger on the DL and WR, no doubt...and I can live with our current crop of QBs until they prove they can't do the job. But we really need a TE who can block with a vengence! And if he can catch some too, that would be nice. You can make great arguments for half a dozen players who should be available in the draft, but I would not be at all upset if they went Pettigrew--especially if we could trade down, get another pick, and still get him.
I agree that we need another TE for blocking, but I wouldn't say an impact player at TE should be so high on the list
At 17 considering the QBs will be taken, I go with the best player available. 2nd pick would be DT Ron Brace 3rd could be OG. That helps with depth. WR Demetrius Byrd in the 4th
Pretty good run-down. Overall, I'd rank the NT need at either #3 or 4 though. We all saw how Jenkins basically spelled Jets D last season - the D went as he went. He needs someone to give him a breather. If Jets end up with Ron Brace in 2nd, I'd be a very happy man, even if that means Jets draft DE in 1st and NT at 2nd - I suspect he'd be gone by 3rd. QB is a problem area we all know about, but draft is not how you should address the problem. The three kids haven't even gotten the chance, and that's the crux of the problem. Giving him the best possible chance to succeed would be the way to go, than drafting yet another unproven QB fresh out of college. Again, strengthening OL/DL in day 1 would make me a very, VERY happy camper. *I am hoping Alex Smith falls to us at either 6th or 7th, so we don't have to draft a TE*
Honestly, I wouldn't even put QB on the Jets list of 'draft needs' unless they view Sanchez as the QB that can (finally) take us to the next level. We have 3 unknowns, no use adding another unless we really believe in them That being said, I'd go 1)Defensive line depth, 2)top-flight WR, 3)blocking TE, 4)RB The three scenarios I wouldn't mind seeing are 1)the one in my sig, 2)sit at 17 and take Moreno, then trade up in rd. 2 (or into rd 1 if possible) to take Kenny Britt or 3)trade up for Sanchez (I've really grown to like him as a prospect and think he will be a really good QB...I like Clemens but I think Sanchez will be better than him)
