.........is it really worth going after one ? Either as insurance against our current crop or for the future. I'm really off the college scene at the moment , but none of these guys really jump out at me. Is next seasons crop any better , and is it worth waiting ? I'm inclined to think so.
IMO....i say we wait. Stafford won't be there....Sanchez is a question mark...and Freeman is overrated. Let's ride with Clemens this year....give him the keys for 2009.....and see what we have. If he stinks it up....then we know we need to draft a franchise QB next year....no questions asked. There's too much uncertainty being tossed around this offseason....regarding our QBs, and the ones available in the draft. So i say we go with the ones we have on our roster...since they already know the system.....it's our safest bet for 2009. Now.....let the flaming begin.
Well Stafford and Sanchez will be gone. I guess Sanchez has an outside chance, but he was very impressive at his pro day and probably raised his stock. Josh Freeman is a major project that should go to a team with capable veterans ahead of him. The Jets have what, 10 career starts from their QBs? Freeman has way too many question marks for us to take him at #17. IMO, he's a 2nd or 3rd round prospect and is overrated.
If Stafford or Sanchez are there at #17 it should be taken into serious consideration to draft one of them and mold into the franchise QB.
I don't think we need to jump early on a running back. Moreno and Wells have the opportunity to be great backs, but I think Greene, Jennings, Brown, Davis, and Ringer all have the opportunity to be dynamic at the next level. With Leon in place and Jones getting up there, I think it pays for us to look into a battering ram type. A guy that doesn't seem to be getting much play though he's been consistently productive is Ian Johnson. I'd love to see the Jets grab him later on. He seems to be a big game player that is suffering from a lack of outstanding measurables, similar to when Cotchery came out of NC State. -X-
I agree, I think we can get a quality RB later in the draft. WR is pretty deep this year. If we can't trade down and pick up Britt then I say go DL, like Ayers.
1999 draft tim couch (bust) donovan mcnabb (solid) akili smith (bust) daunte culpepper (mediocre) cade mcnown (bust) 2000 draft chad pennington (mediocre) 2001 draft michael vick (bust) 2002 draft david carr (bust) joey harrington (bust) patrick ramsey (bust) 2003 draft carson palmer (solid) byron leftwich (bust) kyle boller (bust) rex grossman (bust) 2004 draft eli manning (mediocre) phillip rivers (solid) ben rothelsberger (solid) jp losman (bust) 2005 draft alex smith (bust) aaron rogers ( to early) jason cambell (mediocre) 2006 draft vince young (bust) matt leinart (bust) vince young ( bust) 2007 draft jamarcus russel ( bust) brady quinn (to early) 2008 nfl draft matt ryan (to early) joe flacco (to early) in 10 years.....there were 4 solid quarterbacks.... 16 busts. i dont want a qb in the first round unless he amazes me......none of the three amaze me
Next years class is deeper, and waaay better, this years class is brutal, I would want Freeman in the 3rd round let alone the 1st. Sanchez would be a second rounder next year and Stafford would be a 20s pick
you are way too harsh on some of those QBs, and "solid" doesn't quite do some of them justice like Rothlisberger. the percentage of QBs who make it in the NFL in the 1st round is somewhere in the area of 45-50%. All other rounds it goes down. So round 1 gives you the best odds. You put Vince Young twice.
If by Some Miracle Sanchez falls to us you take him and never look back. I'm not sold on Freeman at all. Big arm and a 10 cent brain do not make a great QB. Just ask Ryan Leaf. afternoondelight, you put a lot of time into a post that is just plain bad. eli manning (mediocre)? Sure, I'd take him over any of the Jets QB's right now thought. He made the plays when he had to make them to win a superbowl. When was the last time we had a QB do that? Manning has had his ups and downs but is a soild Starter for the G-Men. phillip rivers (solid)? Rivers is far more then Solid. Plays hurt and plays well. You List Young Twice instead of Cutler, who is far from a bust. Ben Rothelsberger (solid)? Big Ben is far more then Solid. He took a banged up Pittsburgh offense on his back and lead them to a Superbowl last year while enduring the second most sacks in the league for three years running. Soild may be the most understated thing to say about him. At this point I think your starting to under value QB's to prove your point, and thats a stupid thing to do. aaron rogers ( to early)? Really? 4000 yards, 28 TD's and a 93 rating seems like a hell of a first year as a starter. I'd say at least a soild draft choice with potential to improve. matt ryan (to early) joe flacco (to early) - Convenient that you say two guys that started every game for play off teams as "too early". Ryan had a stellar season. Flacco was OK, but did not hurt a strong ravnes team. With 50% of Frist round pick failing to make much of an Impact, I'd say QB's tend to fall right along those lines.
It's all about the system and the team that takes a QB. I think if we take a QB in round 1, they'd have success right away, even if they started from day 1. We have a solid offensive line in place, two good running backs, an athletic pass catching TE and a very good defense. That being said, I think Clemens can get it done but if we trade up for Sanchez obviously we think extremely highly of him.
