You guys know about Brandon Tate from UNC? He was a big play receiver for the Tar Heels this season before he tore his ACL. He's a senior and while the injury is an awful one, I think he'll be available in the late rounds and it might be worth it to take a flyer on the kid

    Thoughts?

He was a great receiver, but you never know if a guy can bounce back from such a serious knee injury - I think he tore more than just his ACL.

We need receivers that can contribute RIGHT AWAY, with Tate - you'd almost have "redshirt" him. He's in a similar situation as Willis McGahee.

Picking Tate in the later rounds could end up being a very nice pick in the future, but the Jets need WR help now.

That's true, but there's no reason why the Jets can't take a receiver like Hicks or Britt in the second round and Tate in the 5th or 6th. Late round picks like that are projects anyway so there's no harm in drafting him that late.

Not to damper your point....Hicks and Britt will be very late rd 1 or early rd 2 picks at worst. So trading up in Rd 2 is a possibility. Hicks is definitely the "flavor of the month" and high on everyone's radar after his Bowl performance. I always knew Hicks was a solid receiver, West Virginia's lack of defense helped his cause.

Any word on Tate's recovery? And at this point what is the expected round where he will be picked?

Apparently he could have been a pretty high pick of not for a career derailed by injuries.

I heard that he would miss a lot of time in 2009, but I don't have any details.

Tate would be a great pick for a team with some aging receivers where he would be brought up slowly.

He tore his MCL as well in his right knee, that's a lot of damage to one knee, and for a explosive player, a injury like that will be very very hard, i read a while back that we won't be ready until 2010 to play???

Hopefully he can make a full recovery. Lee Evans had multiple knee injuries and had two knee operations. So there is some history with a player coming back from that.

Tate was the most explosive player on UNC's team throughout his entire career....Nicks stepped up when he went down, but Nicks was never anywhere near the scoring threat that Tate was

What are you basing this on, special teams?

Hakeem Nicks had the same amount of receiving touchdowns as Brandon Tate in 2007 - both played in all 12 games.

Nicks had the better college career, by far. I know Tate was slowed by injuries this season, but HN put up better receiving numbers in 2006 and 2007 as well.

Tate was the other guy that got caught smoking weed. Not exactly a bad thing in my book but according to the NFL its bad so he prob will be a 2nd day pick now.

Pretty sure whenever I caught a UNC game, Tate was regarded as the better receiver.

Why was Nicks a three year starter then?

Tate was used primarily as a return man his first two years at UNC. He just 5 catches combined in 2005 and 2006.

McShay also has us using all 6 picks on offense. I'm pretty sure I don't trust what he's saying...

It's not so much that he has him going to the Jets but that he has Tate in the second round. He had a pretty serious injury and he may not be the same player. If he is tho he's a hell of a player and if he's there in the late rounds I would love for us to take a flier on him regardless of what we do in the earlier rounds
