He's an excellent player and his YAC is always among the best if not the best in the NFL year after year. While he is one of the toughest wide receivers in the league, he also seems very injury prone and I can't remember one season in which he didn't lose time or was not limited by injuries in some way. I'd love to have him but doubt we can afford him.
...and then we'd have to worry about what it's gonna cost to re-sign Kellen after the monster year he has with Boldin and Cotchery shagging his balls. This is a risk I'm willing to take. Make it happen!
Cut the Ghost...$14 mil in savings. A Faneca restructure would be more realistic though. I can't believe we're still on the hook for $3 mil for Noodles. The best part about having a cap genius as a GM is for situations like this. Make it happen!
We have the cap space to add $7 million. Here's an interesting idea from ESPN.com that I had thought about a bit: Arizona is looking to draft a RB in the first round. If we ship Thomas Jones off to them, along with our first, they can solve their immediate and longterm RB woes, and still draft a WR with their original 1st round pick. We end up dumping about half a million off the cap this season due to the accelerated cap number. That leaves us with about 12 million to work with, giving us $4 - 5 to deal with the rookies and enough for a $7 million contract. If we include heavy roster bonuses late, we can average the contract out to the level he wants while only hitting the cap for around $5 to $6 million this season.
Uh, cutting the Ghost actually ADDS 14 million more onto our cap space and fucks us for the upcoming year. Pisses me off too that we're still paying Chad, but he was cut too late last year.
I would do a Thomas Jones and a first for Boldin and maybe a 5th rounder or something like that, draft a RB in the 2nd round or so
I was considering re-signing Leon and rookies when I said that. Leon will cost 4-5 million. Rookies will cost probably about the same. Trading TJ costs us more than keeping him and we're at just over 11 million now. I don't know how you figure 12 million. edit: I also don't think Arizona getting a 31 year old RB solves there long term running back woes.
Yep, that's the idea. Thomas Jones returns back where it all started and we take Shonn Greene in the 2nd round to set up our backfield for the next several years. I would love this deal, although it would alter our negotiations with Leon.
Oops...so that's what the parenthesis mean So really the only guys that'll give us any major room if cut are my boy Shaun (not gonna happen) and Mr. Leppard (would be really silly, but he could be cut in camp I believe). Still, I have faith in Capenbaum. $8 mil for Faneca is just too much. I like your scenario, but do you think a run first coach is going to let his horse go and put our running game on the backs of Leon and whoever we draft in the later rounds? I'd be for it though...and TJ's full circle would just be poetic.
TJ has a 2.5 million dollar cap number. If we trade him, we get hit for the $3 million remaining in prorated money. We save the $900k from this year's salary. It's a difference of $2.1 million, which drops $400k off the cap. It takes us up to a minimum of $11.6 million available, which is likely a low estimate. Cutting Eric Smith takes that up and over 12.1 million. There is a different cap hit to cutting him because of his remaining guaranteed money that either gets transferred to Arizona or comes off the books when he signs a new contract with them. Like I said, we'd have to alter our approach to Leon. We could still resign him, but it would have to be with a lower signing bonus and no change in this year's salary. I'd say he could get a 6 year extension at $27 million and include a $10-12 million dollar signing bonus. The bonus then gets prorated over 7 years, and his deal hits us for under $2 million this season. So, if we can get the cap number on a Boldin deal to about $5 - 6 million (again, through roster bonuses that can be renegotiated into signing bonuses later) for this season, we can tackle both issues for $7 million and still have enough for our rookies.
Giving up multiple picks for a WR at this stage of the rebuilding process would not be wise and I love Boldin. He makes complete sense for a team like the Giants, not the Jets though.
No. I think there's a very slim to no chance that we actually get Boldin. It's just fun to consider
Yeah I don't know if Leon's gonna go for that deal, but I hope you're right. I'd be ecstatic to pickup Boldin.
Gotta consider giving up 1st day picks for Boldin, especially if they're going to draft a WR on day one as expected. Why take the risk with college kids when you already have a proven commodity and someone who can still be elite for the next 5 years? A 1st and a 4th or below is worth it. The 1st and the 3rd or higher though is too much. Plus, he's a 'Nole! F-L-O-R-I-D-A, S-T-A-T-E....FLORIDA STATE FLORIDA STATE FLORIDA STTE, WHOOOOO!
What we need are tough receivers that can move the chains, Boldin along with Cotchery would be a great combo, physically mentally tough, plus did you guys see those rush plays Boldin had this season? those can come as valuable especially for a smart guy like shotty jr. I would only do this trade (TJ and a first rounder for Boldin and something else) only if we can still resign Leon, IMO hes the #1 priority this season, hes our best play-maker and a good player in the lockerroom
I can see him going to the dolphins ...just got that gut wrenching feeling ! HA but he better not be coming over the middle with Penny throwing to him if he doesnt want more reconstructive surgery!
