Trading up for Sanchez would effectively magnify the potential risk without doing anything to magnify the potential profit. If he falls to us we should take him, because we don't have a QB on the roster that we have a good feel for and we don't have a particularly large window to do anything with an aging roster at key positions. Having a topflight QB prospect to look at over the next couple of years is a much better situation to be in than going with several people that might pan out. Watching Sanchez fall to the Dolphins would be gut-wrenching.
One thing you gottsa give Tanny credit is...is perhaps he may not be the best evaluator but he knows draft value and how to work the phones. When you add in his contract negotiating and cap management skills he's world's better than a guy like Bradway who was too much of a scout and fell in love w/ individual players which led to total disregard of logic in FA and the draft. There's a reason why some scouts/personell directors never make it any further. As for Sanchez...I'm not big on us trading up for anyone in this draft..but if Sanchez falls to us at # 17 he has to be the pick. I'd also give srong consideration to Josh Freeman.
How great are his contract negoitiating skills and cap management? All these front loaded deals are only good if the player sucks on the cheap years. Kendall and Jones are a prime example of how front loaded deals on productive players blow up on you.
On the other hand, I just think Freeman has the size, the arm , pretty decent mobility, and just the drive to really progress in the NFL. The decision making can be worked on. I'm pretty sure we could substitute the word "Ratliff" for "Freeman"...No point in trading up if we have the exact same thing on the roster. I realize it was preseason, but Ratty showed you all of the above against the Browns in one game. We need a WR who can be useful in the Red Zone.
The Jets have the biggest question mark in the entire league at the most important position on the field. If they think Sanchez can be a franchise QB by all means give up whatever it takes to go get him.
Correct me if I'm wrong and forgive my sarcasm but the year Ratliff came out, I don't recall anyone referring to him as a first round calibur QB?? Opinions differ greatly on freeman but nobody denies that he has first round talent and many respected evaluators including Gil Brandt have him as a top 10 draft talent. Ratliff doesnt have Freeman's size, arm or athleticism. Perhaps he's more accurate..but that is the only aspect of his game that is superior.
How would Sanchez fall to the fins at #25? There is almost no way Parcells would trade up to get him. Parcells is more apt to grab a QB after the first round, IMO, or he may keep his chips with Chad for another year. One of the big reasons we got Chad in the first round is we had 4 first round picks that year which seems unbelievable looking back on it.
That's for sure. We wouldn't even be discussing Ratliff right now if he hadn't had such a fantastic pre-season last year; not just in terms of throws but also the decision making skills on the field.
As far as size goes, YOU'RE right! Ratliff is 3 pounds lighter, and 2 inches shorter. As far as arm strength, I think those TD passes of 70 and 71 yards showed you he could throw the ball. As far as athleticism, I'm not saying Ratliff is Michael Vick back there. But he sure doesn't have cement feet either. He can move in the pocket. MY POINT was that why would we trade up to get an unknown, when we have a similar guy already??? I know what your draft experts say, but call me crazy, I have seen WAY TOO MANY CAN'T MISS first round QB's SUCK in the NFL.
If it means we do not grab Freeman than sure, that would be excellent, I don't want a QB besides Stafford, Brandstater or Bomar, but I surely don't want Freeman
I would take him at 17 if hes the best avaible player there but I don't like trading up unless your getting a sure fire star like Elway or Montana
I didn't come up with a theory? And your using an example of a number one quarterback who is one of the biggest busts in NFL history. Thats a pretty extreme example to mention. That example would apply more If i was talking about trading up for Stafford.
I'm not debating that. That was my point. That Freeman isn't that horrible of a QB, and if we chose a quarterback in round 1, i'd feel much better taking freeman at number 17 or trading down and grabbing him, then trading up and giving up a lot of picks for sanchez. I am a fan of keeping the pick, letting Ratliff show us what he has, and then if it doesn't pan out, drafting a quarterback high next year. I was just using Freeman if we were to take a quarterback in the first round. And i was stating that Freeman isn't "horrible". " Next year's class of quarterbacks will be strong, so giving up multiple picks this year and next year to move up and get Sanchez is not a viable and a considerable option in my opinion, because if Ratty and Clemens don't pan out as expected, we can use a top pick next year to grab one of the many good quarterbacks"
I'd rather not, but if it's between taking Freeman at 17 and trading up for Sanchez, I'd much rather have Sanchez.
Of course if he gets to 17 ..im with it! Even if he falls in the teens ...but i dont want them trading up in the top 10 ..will have to give to much ...so mayb he falls mayb he doesnt ...im content with our guys now if we dont get em o well
Marino fell to the Fins at 27. Sanchez probably goes before we get anywhere near the 17, however there's always the chance he starts to fall and if he fell past us he might well get down to 25. Parcells rarely trades up, however I will guarantee you that he didn't like what he saw out of Chad in the playoff game last season. He's probably pretty tired of rehabilitating teams and then falling short with them. He needs to find his QB if he wants to go to the show again.
